1 Als Jesus dies gesprochen hatte, ging er mit seinen Jüngern hinaus über den Winterbach Kidron; dort war ein Garten, in den Jesus und seine Jünger eintraten.

Die Gefangennahme Jesu

2 Aber auch Judas, der ihn verriet, kannte den Ort; denn Jesus versammelte sich oft dort mit seinen Jüngern. 3 Nachdem nun Judas die Truppe und von den obersten Priestern und Pharisäern Diener bekommen hatte, kam er dorthin mit Fackeln und Lampen und mit Waffen. 4 Jesus nun, der alles wusste, was über ihn kommen sollte, ging hinaus und sprach zu ihnen: Wen sucht ihr? 5 Sie antworteten ihm: Jesus, den Nazarener! Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Ich bin’s! Es stand aber auch Judas bei ihnen, der ihn verriet. 6 Als er nun zu ihnen sprach: Ich bin’s!, wichen sie alle zurück und fielen zu Boden. 7 Nun fragte er sie wiederum: Wen sucht ihr? Sie aber sprachen: Jesus, den Nazarener! 8 Jesus antwortete: Ich habe euch gesagt, dass ich es bin. Wenn ihr nun mich sucht, so lasst diese gehen! 9 — damit das Wort erfüllt würde, das er gesagt hatte: Ich habe keinen verloren von denen, die du mir gegeben hast. 10 Da nun Simon Petrus ein Schwert hatte, zog er es und schlug nach dem Knecht des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm das rechte Ohr ab; der Name des Knechtes aber war Malchus. 11 Da sprach Jesus zu Petrus: Stecke dein Schwert in die Scheide! Soll ich den Kelch nicht trinken, den mir der Vater gegeben hat?

Jesus vor Hannas und Kajaphas. Die Verleugnung des Petrus

12 Die Truppe nun und ihr Befehlshaber und die Diener der Juden ergriffen Jesus und banden ihn, 13 und sie führten ihn zuerst ab zu Hannas; denn er war der Schwiegervater des Kajaphas, welcher in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war. 14 Das war der Kajaphas, der den Juden geraten hatte, es sei besser, dass ein Mensch für das Volk umkomme. 15 Simon Petrus aber folgte Jesus nach, und der andere Jünger. Dieser Jünger war mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt und ging mit Jesus hinein in den Hof des Hohenpriesters. 16 Petrus aber stand draußen vor der Tür. Da ging der andere Jünger hinaus, der mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt war, und redete mit der Türhüterin und führte Petrus hinein. 17 Da spricht die Magd, die die Tür hütete, zu Petrus: Bist nicht auch du einer von den Jüngern dieses Menschen? Petrus spricht: Ich bin’s nicht! 18 Es standen aber die Knechte und Diener um ein Kohlenfeuer, das sie gemacht hatten — denn es war kalt —, und wärmten sich; Petrus aber stand bei ihnen und wärmte sich. 19 Der Hohepriester nun befragte Jesus über seine Jünger und über seine Lehre. 20 Jesus antwortete ihm: Ich habe öffentlich zu der Welt geredet; ich habe stets in der Synagoge und im Tempel gelehrt, wo die Juden immer zusammenkommen, und im Verborgenen habe ich nichts geredet. 21 Was fragst du mich? Frage die, welche gehört haben, was ich zu ihnen geredet habe; siehe, diese wissen, was ich gesagt habe! 22 Als er aber dies sagte, schlug einer der Diener, die dabeistanden, Jesus ins Gesicht und sprach: Antwortest du so dem Hohenpriester? 23 Jesus erwiderte ihm: Habe ich unrecht geredet, so beweise, was daran unrecht war; habe ich aber recht geredet, was schlägst du mich? 24 Hannas hatte ihn nämlich gebunden zum Hohenpriester Kajaphas gesandt. 25 Simon Petrus aber stand da und wärmte sich. Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Bist nicht auch du einer seiner Jünger? Er leugnete und sprach: Ich bin’s nicht! 26 Da sagte einer von den Knechten des Hohenpriesters, ein Verwandter dessen, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte: Sah ich dich nicht im Garten bei ihm? 27 Da leugnete Petrus nochmals, und sogleich krähte der Hahn.

Jesus vor Pilatus

28 Sie führten nun Jesus von Kajaphas in das Prätorium. Es war aber noch früh. Und sie selbst betraten das Prätorium nicht, damit sie nicht unrein würden, sondern das Passah essen könnten. 29 Da ging Pilatus zu ihnen hinaus und fragte: Was für eine Anklage erhebt ihr gegen diesen Menschen? 30 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Wäre er kein Übeltäter, so hätten wir ihn dir nicht ausgeliefert! 31 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: So nehmt ihr ihn und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetz! Die Juden nun sprachen zu ihm: Wir dürfen niemand töten! 32 — damit Jesu Wort erfüllt würde, das er sagte, als er andeutete, durch welchen Tod er sterben sollte. 33 Nun ging Pilatus wieder ins Prätorium hinein und rief Jesus und fragte ihn: Bist du der König der Juden? 34 Jesus antwortete ihm: Redest du das von dir selbst aus, oder haben es dir andere von mir gesagt? 35 Pilatus antwortete: Bin ich denn ein Jude? Dein Volk und die obersten Priester haben dich mir ausgeliefert! Was hast du getan? 36 Jesus antwortete: Mein Reich ist nicht von dieser Welt; wäre mein Reich von dieser Welt, so hätten meine Diener gekämpft, damit ich den Juden nicht ausgeliefert würde; nun aber ist mein Reich nicht von hier. 37 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm: So bist du also ein König? Jesus antwortete: Du sagst es; ich bin ein König. Ich bin dazu geboren und dazu in die Welt gekommen, dass ich der Wahrheit Zeugnis gebe; jeder, der aus der Wahrheit ist, hört meine Stimme. 38 Pilatus spricht zu ihm: Was ist Wahrheit? Und nachdem er das gesagt hatte, ging er wieder hinaus zu den Juden und sprach zu ihnen: Ich finde keine Schuld an ihm! 39 Ihr habt aber eine Gewohnheit, dass ich euch am Passahfest einen freigebe; wollt ihr nun, dass ich euch den König der Juden freigebe? 40 Da schrien sie wieder alle und sprachen: Nicht diesen, sondern Barabbas! Barabbas aber war ein Mörder.

Jesus is arrested

1 When Jesus had finished praying, he left with his disciples. They crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden. Jesus and his disciples went into it. 2 Judas knew the place. He was going to hand Jesus over to his enemies. Jesus had often met in that place with his disciples. 3 So Judas came to the garden. He was guiding a group of soldiers and some officials. The chief priests and the Pharisees had sent them. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. 4 Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him. So he went out and asked them, ‘Who do you want?’ 5 ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘I am he,’ Jesus said. Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, was standing there with them. 6 When Jesus said, ‘I am he,’ they moved back. Then they fell to the ground. 7 He asked them again, ‘Who do you want?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they said. 8 Jesus answered, ‘I told you I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.’ 9 This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken would come true. He had said, ‘I have not lost anyone God has given me.’ 10 Simon Peter had a sword and pulled it out. He struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus. 11 Jesus commanded Peter, ‘Put your sword away! Shouldn’t I drink the cup of suffering the Father has given me?’ 12 Then the group of soldiers, their commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They tied him up 13 and brought him first to Annas. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time. 14 Caiaphas had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.

Peter says he is not Jesus’ disciple

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. The high priest knew the other disciple. So that disciple went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard. 16 But Peter had to wait outside by the door. The other disciple came back. He was the one the high priest knew. He spoke to the servant woman who was on duty there. Then he brought Peter in. 17 She asked Peter, ‘You aren’t one of Jesus’ disciples too, are you?’ ‘I am not,’ he replied. 18 It was cold. The slaves and officials stood around a fire. They had made it to keep warm. Peter was also standing with them. He was warming himself.

The high priest questions Jesus

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus. He asked him about his disciples and his teaching. 20 ‘I have spoken openly to the world,’ Jesus replied. ‘I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I didn’t say anything in secret. 21 Why question me? Ask the people who heard me. They certainly know what I said.’ 22 When Jesus said that, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. ‘Is this any way to answer the high priest?’ he asked. 23 ‘Have I said something wrong?’ Jesus replied. ‘If I have, then tell everyone what it was. But if I spoke the truth, why did you hit me?’ 24 Annas sent him, tied up, to Caiaphas, the high priest.

Peter again says he is not Jesus’ disciple

25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself by the fire. So they asked him, ‘You aren’t one of Jesus’ disciples too, are you?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ 26 One of the high priest’s slaves was a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off. He said to Peter, ‘Didn’t I see you with Jesus in the garden?’ 27 Again Peter said no. At that exact moment a cockerel began to crow.

Jesus is brought to Pilate

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning. The Jewish leaders did not want to be made ‘unclean’. They wanted to be able to eat the Passover meal. So they did not enter the palace. 29 Pilate came out to them. He asked, ‘What charges are you bringing against this man?’ 30 ‘He has committed crimes,’ they replied. ‘If he hadn’t, we would not have handed him over to you.’ 31 Pilate said, ‘Take him yourselves. Judge him by your own law.’ ‘But we don’t have the right to put anyone to death,’ they complained. 32 This happened so that what Jesus said about how he was going to die would come true. 33 Then Pilate went back inside the palace. He ordered Jesus to be brought to him. Pilate asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ 34 ‘Is that your own idea?’ Jesus asked. ‘Or did others talk to you about me?’ 35 ‘Am I a Jew?’ Pilate replied. ‘Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?’ 36 Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not from this world. If it were, those who serve me would fight. They would try to keep the Jewish leaders from arresting me. My kingdom is from another place.’ 37 ‘So you are a king, then!’ said Pilate. Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, that’s the reason I was born. I was born and came into the world to be a witness to the truth. Everyone who is on the side of truth listens to me.’ 38 ‘What is truth?’ Pilate replied. Then Pilate went out again to the Jews gathered there. He said, ‘I find no basis for any charge against him. 39 But you have a practice at Passover time. At that time, you ask me to set one prisoner free for you. Do you want me to set “the king of the Jews” free?’ 40 They shouted back, ‘No! Not him! Give us Barabbas!’ Barabbas had taken part in an armed struggle against the country’s rulers.
