Galater 4 | Schlachter 2000
1 Ich sage aber: Solange der Erbe unmündig ist, besteht zwischen ihm und einem Knecht kein Unterschied, obwohl er Herr aller Güter ist; 2 sondern er steht unter Vormündern und Verwaltern bis zu der vom Vater festgesetzten Zeit. 3 Ebenso waren auch wir, als wir noch unmündig waren, den Grundsätzen der Welt als Knechte unterworfen. 4 Als aber die Zeit erfüllt war, sandte Gott seinen Sohn, geboren von einer Frau und unter das Gesetz getan, 5 damit er die, welche unter dem Gesetz waren, loskaufte, damit wir die Sohnschaft empfingen. 6 Weil ihr nun Söhne seid, hat Gott den Geist seines Sohnes in eure Herzen gesandt, der ruft: Abba, Vater! 7 So bist du also nicht mehr Knecht, sondern Sohn; wenn aber Sohn, dann auch Erbe Gottes durch Christus.

Warnender Zuspruch des Apostels

8 Damals aber, als ihr Gott nicht kanntet, dientet ihr denen, die von Natur nicht Götter sind. 9 Jetzt aber, da ihr Gott erkannt habt, ja vielmehr von Gott erkannt seid, wieso wendet ihr euch wiederum den schwachen und armseligen Grundsätzen zu, denen ihr von Neuem dienen wollt? 10 Ihr beachtet Tage und Monate und Zeiten und Jahre.* 11 Ich fürchte um euch, dass ich am Ende vergeblich um euch gearbeitet habe. 12 Werdet doch wie ich, denn ich bin wie ihr! Ich bitte euch, ihr Brüder! Ihr habt mir nichts zuleide getan; 13 ihr wisst aber, dass ich euch in Schwachheit des Fleisches zum ersten Mal das Evangelium verkündigt habe. 14 Und meine Anfechtung in meinem Fleisch habt ihr nicht verachtet oder gar verabscheut, sondern wie einen Engel Gottes nahmt ihr mich auf, wie Christus Jesus. 15 Was war denn eure Glückseligkeit? Denn ich gebe euch das Zeugnis, dass ihr wenn möglich eure Augen ausgerissen und mir gegeben hättet. 16 Bin ich also euer Feind geworden, weil ich euch die Wahrheit sage? 17 Sie eifern um euch nicht in edler Weise, sondern wollen euch ausschließen, damit ihr um sie eifert. 18 Das Eifern ist aber gut, wenn es für das Gute geschieht, und zwar allezeit, nicht nur, wenn ich bei euch anwesend bin. 19 Meine Kinder, um die ich noch einmal Geburtswehen leide, bis Christus in euch Gestalt gewinnt 20 — wie gerne wollte ich jetzt bei euch sein und in anderem Ton zu euch reden, denn ich weiß nicht, woran ich mit euch bin!

Die Kinder der Magdund die Kinder der Freien

21 Sagt mir, die ihr unter dem Gesetz sein wollt: Hört ihr das Gesetz nicht? 22 Es steht doch geschrieben, dass Abraham zwei Söhne hatte, einen von der [leibeigenen] Magd, den anderen von der Freien. 23 Der von der Magd war gemäß dem Fleisch geboren, der von der Freien aber kraft der Verheißung. 24 Das hat einen bildlichen Sinn: Dies sind nämlich die zwei Bündnisse; das eine vom Berg Sinai, das zur Knechtschaft gebiert, das ist Hagar. 25 Denn »Hagar« bedeutet den Berg Sinai in Arabien und entspricht dem jetzigen Jerusalem, und es ist in Knechtschaft samt seinen Kindern. 26 Das obere Jerusalem aber ist frei, und dieses ist die Mutter von uns allen. 27 Denn es steht geschrieben: »Freue dich, du Unfruchtbare, die du nicht gebierst; brich in Jubel aus und jauchze, die du nicht in Wehen liegst, denn die Vereinsamte hat mehr Kinder als die, welche den Mann hat«.* 28 Wir aber, Brüder, sind nach der Weise des Isaak Kinder der Verheißung. 29 Doch gleichwie damals der gemäß dem Fleisch Geborene den gemäß dem Geist [Geborenen] verfolgte, so auch jetzt. 30 Was aber sagt die Schrift? »Treibe die Magd hinaus und ihren Sohn! Denn der Sohn der Magd soll nicht erben mit dem Sohn der Freien«.* 31 So sind wir also, Brüder, nicht Kinder der [leibeigenen] Magd, sondern der Freien.

1 Here is what I have been saying. As long as your own children are young, they are no different from slaves in your house. They are no different, even though they will own all the property. 2 People are in charge of the property. And other people are in charge of the children. The children remain under their care until they become adults. At that time their fathers give them the property. 3 It is the same with us. When we were children, we were slaves to the basic spiritual powers of the world. 4 But then the chosen time came. God sent his Son. A woman gave birth to him. He was born under the authority of the law. 5 He came to set free those who were under the authority of the law. He wanted us to be adopted as children with all the rights children have. 6 Because you are his children, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. He is the Holy Spirit. By his power we call God Abba. Abba means Father. 7 So you aren’t a slave any longer. You are God’s child. Because you are his child, God gives you the rights of those who are his children.

Paul’s concern for the believers in Galatia

8 At one time you didn’t know God. You were slaves to gods that are really not gods at all. 9 But now you know God. Even better, God knows you. So why are you turning back to those weak and worthless powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again? 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! 11 I am afraid for you. I am afraid that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you. 12 I make my appeal to you, brothers and sisters. I’m asking you to become like me. After all, I became like you. You didn’t do anything wrong to me. 13 Remember when I first preached the good news to you? Remember I did that because I was ill. 14 And my illness was hard on you. But you weren’t mean to me. You didn’t make fun of me. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God. You welcomed me as if I were Christ Jesus himself. 15 So why aren’t you treating me the same way now? Suppose you could have torn out your own eyes and given them to me. Then you would have done it. I am a witness to this. 16 Have I become your enemy now by telling you the truth? 17 Those people are trying hard to win you over. But it is not for your good. They want to take you away from us. They want you to commit yourselves to them. 18 It is fine to be committed to something, if the purpose is good. And you shouldn’t be committed only when I am with you. You should always be committed. 19 My dear children, I am in pain for you, just as I was when we first met. I have pain like a woman giving birth. And my pain will continue until Christ makes you like himself. 20 I wish I could be with you now. I wish I could change my tone of voice. As it is, I don’t understand you.

Hagar and Sarah

21 You who want to be under the authority of the law, tell me something. Don’t you know what the law says? 22 It is written that Abraham had two sons. The slave woman gave birth to one of them. The free woman gave birth to the other one. 23 Abraham’s son by the slave woman was born in the usual way. But his son by the free woman was born because of God’s promise. 24 These things are examples. The two women stand for two covenants. One covenant comes from Mount Sinai. It gives birth to children who are going to be slaves. It is Hagar. 25 Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia. She stands for the present city of Jerusalem. That’s because she and her children are slaves. 26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free. She is our mother. 27 It is written, ‘Be glad, woman, you who have never had children. Shout for joy and cry out loud, you who have never had labour pains. The woman who is all alone has more children than the woman who has a husband.’ 28 Brothers and sisters, you are children because of God’s promise just as Isaac was. 29 At that time, the son born in the usual way tried to hurt the other son. The other son was born by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is the same now. 30 But what does Scripture say? ‘Get rid of the slave woman. Get rid of her son. The slave woman’s son will never have a share of the family’s property. He’ll never share it with the free woman’s son.’ 31 Brothers and sisters, we are not the slave woman’s children. We are the free woman’s children.
