1Der HERR aber hatte zu Abram gesprochen: Geh hinaus aus deinem Land und aus deiner Verwandtschaft und aus dem Haus deines Vaters in das Land, das ich dir zeigen werde!2Und ich will dich zu einem großen Volk machen und dich segnen und deinen Namen groß machen, und du sollst ein Segen sein.3Ich will segnen, die dich segnen, und verfluchen, die dich verfluchen; und in dir sollen gesegnet werden alle Geschlechter auf der Erde!4Da ging Abram, wie der HERR zu ihm gesagt hatte, und Lot ging mit ihm. Abram aber war 75 Jahre alt, als er von Haran auszog.5Und Abram nahm seine Frau Sarai und Lot, den Sohn seines Bruders, samt all ihrer Habe, die sie erworben hatten, und den Seelen, die sie in Haran gewonnen hatten; und sie zogen aus, um ins Land Kanaan zu gehen; und sie kamen in das Land Kanaan.6Und Abram durchzog das Land bis zur Ortschaft Sichem, bis zur Terebinthe Mores. Damals aber waren die Kanaaniter im Land.7Da erschien der HERR dem Abram und sprach: Deinem Samen will ich dieses Land geben! Und er baute dort dem HERRN, der ihm erschienen war, einen Altar.8Von da zog er weiter auf das Bergland östlich von Bethel und schlug sein Zelt so auf, dass er Bethel im Westen und Ai im Osten hatte. Und er baute dort dem HERRN einen Altar und rief den Namen des HERRN an.9Danach brach Abram auf und zog immer weiter nach Süden.
Abram in Ägypten
10Da aber eine Hungersnot im Land herrschte, zog Abram nach Ägypten hinab, um sich dort aufzuhalten; denn die Hungersnot lastete schwer auf dem Land.11Und es geschah, als er sich Ägypten näherte, da sprach er zu seiner Frau Sarai: Sieh doch, ich weiß, dass du eine Frau von schöner Gestalt bist.12Wenn dich nun die Ägypter sehen, so werden sie sagen: Das ist seine Frau! Und sie werden mich töten und dich leben lassen.13So sage doch, du seist meine Schwester, damit es mir um deinetwillen gut geht und meine Seele am Leben bleibt um deinetwillen!14Und es geschah, als Abram nach Ägypten kam, da sahen die Ägypter, dass die Frau sehr schön war.15Und als die Fürsten des Pharao sie sahen, priesen sie sie vor dem Pharao. Da wurde die Frau in das Haus des Pharao gebracht.16Und es ging Abram gut um ihretwillen; und er bekam Schafe, Rinder und Esel, Knechte und Mägde, Eselinnen und Kamele.17Aber der HERR schlug den Pharao und sein Haus mit großen Plagen um Sarais, der Frau Abrams, willen.18Da rief der Pharao den Abram und sprach: Was hast du mir da angetan! Warum hast du mir nicht mitgeteilt, dass sie deine Frau ist?19Warum hast du gesagt: »Sie ist meine Schwester«, sodass ich sie mir zur Frau nehmen wollte? Und nun siehe, da ist deine Frau; nimm sie und geh!20Und der Pharao bestimmte seinetwegen Männer, die ihm und seiner Frau und allem, was er hatte, das Geleit gaben.

God chooses Abram
1The LORD had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s family. Go to the land I will show you.2‘I will make you into a great nation. And I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing to others.3I will bless those who bless you. I will put a curse on anyone who puts a curse on you. All nations on earth will be blessed because of you.’4So Abram went, just as the LORD had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was 75 years old when he left Harran.5He took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot. They took all the people and possessions they had acquired in Harran. They started out for the land of Canaan. And they arrived there.6Abram travelled through the land. He went as far as the large tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were living in the land.7The LORD appeared to Abram at Shechem. He said, ‘I will give this land to your family who comes after you.’ So Abram built an altar there to honour the LORD, who had appeared to him.8From there, Abram went on towards the hills east of Bethel. He set up his tent there. Bethel was to the west, and Ai was to the east. Abram built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD.9Then Abram left and continued south towards the Negev Desert.
Abram goes to Egypt
10At that time there was not enough food in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while.11As he was about to enter Egypt, he spoke to his wife Sarai. He said, ‘I know what a beautiful woman you are.12The people of Egypt will see you and say, “This is his wife.” Then they will kill me. But they will let you live.13Tell them you are my sister. Then I’ll be treated well and my life will be spared because of you.’14Abram arrived in Egypt. The Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman.15When Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they told Pharaoh how beautiful she was. So she was taken into his palace.16Pharaoh treated Abram well because of her. So Abram gained more sheep and cattle and male and female donkeys. He also gained more male and female servants and some camels.17But the LORD sent terrible diseases on Pharaoh and everyone in his palace. The LORD did it because of Abram’s wife Sarai.18So Pharaoh sent for Abram. ‘What have you done to me?’ he said. ‘Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?19Why did you say she was your sister? That’s why I took her to be my wife. Now then, here’s your wife. Take her and go!’20Then Pharaoh gave orders to his men about Abram. They sent him on his way. So he left with his wife and everything he had.
