1Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht und sei nicht verzagt! Nimm alles Kriegsvolk mit dir und mache dich auf und ziehe hinauf nach Ai! Siehe, ich habe den König von Ai in deine Hand gegeben samt seinem Volk und seiner Stadt und seinem Land.2Und du sollst mit Ai und ihrem König verfahren, wie du mit Jericho und seinem König verfahren bist, außer dass ihr die Beute und ihr Vieh unter euch teilen dürft; aber lege dir einen Hinterhalt hinter der Stadt!3Da machte sich Josua auf und alles Kriegsvolk, um nach Ai hinaufzuziehen; und Josua erwählte 30 000 tapfere Krieger; und er sandte sie aus bei Nacht4und gebot ihnen und sprach: Habt acht, ihr sollt den Hinterhalt bilden hinter der Stadt; entfernt euch aber nicht allzu weit von der Stadt, und seid alle bereit!5Ich aber und alles Volk, das mit mir ist, wir wollen uns zu der Stadt begeben. Und wenn sie, wie zuvor, herausziehen uns entgegen, so wollen wir vor ihnen fliehen,6damit sie herauskommen hinter uns her, bis wir sie von der Stadt abgeschnitten haben; denn sie werden sagen: »Sie fliehen vor uns wie zuvor!« Und wenn wir vor ihnen fliehen,7so sollt ihr euch aus dem Hinterhalt aufmachen und die Stadt einnehmen; denn der HERR, euer Gott, wird sie in eure Hand geben.8Wenn ihr dann aber die Stadt eingenommen habt, so steckt sie in Brand; nach dem Wort des HERRN sollt ihr handeln! Seht, ich habe es euch geboten!9So sandte Josua sie aus, und sie zogen in den Hinterhalt und hielten zwischen Bethel und Ai, westlich von Ai. Josua aber verbrachte jene Nacht in der Mitte des Volkes.10Und Josua machte sich am Morgen früh auf und musterte das Volk; und er zog mit den Ältesten Israels vor dem Volk her hinauf nach Ai.11Auch alles Kriegsvolk, das bei ihm war, zog hinauf; und sie rückten heran und stellten sich auf gegen die Stadt und lagerten sich nördlich von Ai, sodass [nur] das Tal zwischen ihnen und Ai war.12Er hatte aber etwa 5 000 Mann genommen und zwischen Bethel und Ai in den Hinterhalt gelegt, westlich von der Stadt.13Und so stellten sie das Volk auf, das ganze Lager nördlich von der Stadt, den Hinterhalt aber westlich von der Stadt; und Josua zog in jener Nacht mitten in das Tal.14Als aber der König von Ai dies sah, da eilten die Männer der Stadt und machten sich früh auf und zogen heraus, um gegen Israel zu kämpfen, der König und sein ganzes Volk, an den bestimmten Ort vor der Arava; denn er wusste nicht, dass ein Hinterhalt gelegt war hinter der Stadt.15Josua aber und ganz Israel ließen sich vor ihnen schlagen und flohen auf dem Weg zur Wüste.16Da wurde das ganze Volk, das in der Stadt war, zusammengerufen, damit es ihnen nachjagte, und sie jagten Josua nach und wurden von der Stadt abgeschnitten.17Und es blieb nicht ein einziger Mann übrig in Ai und Bethel, der nicht ausgezogen wäre, um Israel nachzujagen; und sie ließen die Stadt offen stehen und jagten Israel nach.18Da sprach der HERR zu Josua: Strecke die Lanze, die du in der Hand hast, aus gegen Ai; denn ich will sie in deine Hand geben! Und Josua streckte die Lanze, die in seiner Hand war, gegen die Stadt aus.19Und der Hinterhalt brach rasch auf von seinem Ort, und sie liefen, als er seine Hand ausstreckte, und kamen in die Stadt und nahmen sie ein, und sie steckten die Stadt schnell in Brand.20Als sich nun die Männer von Ai umwandten und zurückschauten, siehe, da stieg der Rauch der Stadt zum Himmel auf; sie aber hatten keine Möglichkeit zu fliehen, weder dahin noch dorthin. Und das Volk, das zur Wüste floh, wandte sich um gegen seine Verfolger.21Denn als Josua und ganz Israel sah, dass der Hinterhalt die Stadt eingenommen hatte und dass der Rauch der Stadt aufstieg, wandten sie sich wieder um und schlugen die Männer von Ai.22Und jene* waren aus der Stadt ausgezogen, ihnen entgegen, sodass sie zwischen die Söhne Israels kamen, [die sie] von beiden Seiten [angriffen]; und sie schlugen sie, bis kein Einziger von ihnen übrig war, der entflohen oder entkommen wäre.23Doch den König von Ai fing man lebendig und brachte ihn zu Josua.24Und als Israel alle Einwohner von Ai auf dem Feld und in der Wüste, wohin sie ihnen nachgejagt waren, vollends niedergemacht hatte und alle durch die Schärfe des Schwertes gefallen waren, bis sie aufgerieben waren, da wandte sich ganz Israel gegen Ai und schlug sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes.25Und die Zahl all derer, die an jenem Tag fielen, Männer und Frauen, betrug 12 000, alle Einwohner von Ai.26Josua aber zog seine Hand, mit der er die Lanze ausstreckte, nicht zurück, bis an allen Einwohnern von Ai der Bann vollstreckt war.27Doch das Vieh und die Beute dieser Stadt teilte Israel unter sich, nach dem Wort des HERRN, das er Josua geboten hatte.28Und Josua äscherte Ai ein und machte einen ewigen Schutthügel daraus, [der noch besteht] bis zum heutigen Tag.29Und er ließ den König von Ai an einen Holzstamm hängen bis zum Abend. Als aber die Sonne untergegangen war, gebot Josua, dass man seinen Leichnam von dem Holzstamm herabnehme; da warfen sie ihn unter das Tor der Stadt und errichteten über ihm einen großen Steinhaufen, der [noch] dort ist bis zum heutigen Tag.
Der Altar auf dem Berg Ebal. Die Verlesung des Gesetzes
30Damals baute Josua dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, einen Altar auf dem Berg Ebal,31so wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, es den Kindern Israels geboten hatte, wie es geschrieben steht im Buch des Gesetzes Moses, einen Altar aus unbehauenen Steinen, über die man kein Eisen geschwungen hatte; und sie brachten dem HERRN darauf Brandopfer dar und opferten Friedensopfer.32Und er schrieb dort auf die Steine eine Abschrift des Gesetzes Moses, das er in Gegenwart der Kinder Israels geschrieben hatte.33Und ganz Israel samt seinen Ältesten und Vorstehern und Richtern stand zu beiden Seiten der Lade, den Priestern und den Leviten gegenüber, welche die Bundeslade des HERRN trugen, die Fremdlinge wie auch die Einheimischen; die eine Hälfte gegenüber dem Berg Garizim und die andere Hälfte gegenüber dem Berg Ebal, wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, zuvor geboten hatte, das Volk Israel zu segnen.34Danach las er alle Worte des Gesetzes, den Segen und den Fluch, alles, wie es im Buch des Gesetzes geschrieben steht.35Es war kein Wort von allem, was Mose geboten hatte, das Josua nicht gelesen hätte vor der ganzen Gemeinde Israels, auch vor den Frauen und Kindern und den Fremdlingen, die in ihrer Mitte lebten.

1And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:2And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.3So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.4And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:5And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,6(For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.7Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.8And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.9Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.10And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.11And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.12And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.13And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.14And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it , that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.15And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.16And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.17And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.18And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.19And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.20And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.21And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.22And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.23And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.24And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.25And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.26For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.27Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.28And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.29And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.30Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,31As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.32And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.33And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.34And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.35There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
