1Jedermann ordne sich den Obrigkeiten unter, die über ihn gesetzt sind; denn es gibt keine Obrigkeit, die nicht von Gott wäre; die bestehenden Obrigkeiten aber sind von Gott eingesetzt.2Wer sich also gegen die Obrigkeit auflehnt, der widersetzt sich der Ordnung Gottes; die sich aber widersetzen, ziehen sich selbst die Verurteilung zu.3Denn die Herrscher sind nicht wegen guter Werke zu fürchten, sondern wegen böser. Wenn du dich also vor der Obrigkeit nicht fürchten willst, so tue das Gute, dann wirst du Lob von ihr empfangen!4Denn sie ist Gottes Dienerin, zu deinem Besten. Tust du aber Böses, so fürchte dich! Denn sie trägt das Schwert nicht umsonst; Gottes Dienerin ist sie, eine Rächerin zum Zorngericht an dem, der das Böse tut.5Darum ist es notwendig, sich unterzuordnen, nicht allein um des Zorngerichts, sondern auch um des Gewissens willen.6Deshalb zahlt ihr ja auch Steuern; denn sie sind Gottes Diener, die eben dazu beständig tätig sind.7So gebt nun jedermann, was ihr schuldig seid: Steuer, dem die Steuer, Zoll, dem der Zoll, Furcht, dem die Furcht, Ehre, dem die Ehre gebührt.
Die Liebe ist die Erfüllung des Gesetzes
8Seid niemand etwas schuldig, außer dass ihr einander liebt; denn wer den anderen liebt, hat das Gesetz erfüllt.9Denn die [Gebote ]: »Du sollst nicht ehebrechen, du sollst nicht töten, du sollst nicht stehlen, du sollst nicht falsches Zeugnis ablegen, du sollst nicht begehren« — und welches andere Gebot es noch gibt —, werden zusammengefasst in diesem Wort, nämlich: »Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben wie dich selbst!«10Die Liebe tut dem Nächsten nichts Böses; so ist nun die Liebe die Erfüllung des Gesetzes.
Leben in Wachsamkeit und Reinheit
11Und dieses [sollen wir tun] als solche, die die Zeit verstehen, dass nämlich die Stunde schon da ist, dass wir vom Schlaf aufwachen sollten; denn jetzt ist unsere Errettung näher, als da wir gläubig wurden.12Die Nacht ist vorgerückt, der Tag aber ist nahe. So lasst uns nun ablegen die Werke der Finsternis und anlegen die Waffen des Lichts!13Lasst uns anständig wandeln wie am Tag, nicht in Schlemmereien und Trinkgelagen, nicht in Unzucht und Ausschweifungen, nicht in Streit und Neid;14sondern zieht den Herrn Jesus Christus an und pflegt das Fleisch nicht bis zur Erregung von Begierden!

Submission to the Authorities
1Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.2Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.3For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval,4for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.5Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience.6For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing.7Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.
Fulfilling the Law Through Love
8Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.9For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”10Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.11Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.12The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.13Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.14But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
