Der Sklavendienst Israels in Ägypten

1 Und dies sind die Namen der Söhne Israels, die nach Ägypten gekommen waren; sie kamen mit Jakob, jeder mit seinem Haus*: 2 Ruben, Simeon, Levi und Juda; 3 Issaschar, Sebulon und Benjamin; 4 Dan und Naphtali, Gad und Asser. 5 Und die ganze Nachkommenschaft Jakobs betrug damals 70 Seelen. Joseph aber war schon [vorher] in Ägypten. 6 Und Joseph starb und alle seine Brüder und jene ganze Generation. 7 Aber die Kinder Israels waren fruchtbar, regten und mehrten sich und wurden so zahlreich, dass das Land von ihnen voll wurde. 8 Da kam ein neuer König auf über Ägypten, der nichts von Joseph wusste. 9 Der sprach zu seinem Volk: Siehe, das Volk der Kinder Israels ist zahlreicher und stärker als wir. 10 Wohlan, lasst uns kluge Maßnahmen gegen sie ergreifen, dass sie nicht zu viele werden; sie könnten sonst, wenn sich ein Krieg erhebt, womöglich zu unseren Feinden übergehen und gegen uns kämpfen und aus dem Land ziehen! 11 Darum setzte man Sklaventreiber über sie, um sie durch Lasten* zu bedrücken; und sie bauten dem Pharao die Vorratsstädte Pitom und Ramses. 12 Je mehr sie aber [das Volk] bedrückten, desto zahlreicher wurde es, und desto mehr breitete es sich aus, sodass ihnen vor den Kindern Israels graute. 13 Darum zwangen die Ägypter die Kinder Israels mit Gewalt zum Dienst, 14 und sie machten ihnen das Leben bitter mit harter Zwangsarbeit an Lehm und Ziegeln und mit allerlei Feldarbeit, lauter Arbeiten, zu denen man sie mit Gewalt zwang. 15 Und der König von Ägypten redete mit den hebräischen Hebammen, von denen die eine Schiphra, die andere Pua hieß, 16 und er sprach: Wenn ihr die Hebräerinnen entbindet, so seht auf der Stelle nach; wenn es ein Sohn ist, so tötet ihn, ist es aber eine Tochter, so lasst sie leben! 17 Aber die Hebammen fürchteten Gott und taten nicht, was ihnen der König von Ägypten befohlen hatte, sondern sie ließen die Knaben leben. 18 Da ließ der König von Ägypten die Hebammen rufen und fragte sie: Warum tut ihr das, dass ihr die Knaben leben lasst? 19 Da antworteten die Hebammen dem Pharao: Nun, die hebräischen Frauen sind nicht wie die ägyptischen; sie sind lebhafter; ehe die Hebamme zu ihnen kommt, haben sie geboren! 20 Und Gott segnete die Hebammen; das Volk aber vermehrte sich und nahm gewaltig zu. 21 Und es geschah, weil die Hebammen Gott fürchteten, baute er ihnen Häuser.* 22 Da gebot der Pharao seinem ganzen Volk und sprach: Werft alle Söhne, die [ihnen] geboren werden, in den Nil; aber alle Töchter lasst leben!

Israel Increases Greatly in Egypt

1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. 6 Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. 7 But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.

Pharaoh Oppresses Israel

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. 10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. 13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves. 15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” 20 So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews* you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”
