Die Bundeslade bei den Philistern

1 Die Philister aber hatten die Lade Gottes genommen und sie von Eben-Eser nach Asdod gebracht. 2 Und die Philister nahmen die Lade Gottes und brachten sie in das Haus Dagons* und stellten sie neben Dagon. 3 Als aber die Asdoditer am folgenden Morgen früh aufstanden, siehe, da lag Dagon auf seinem Angesicht auf der Erde vor der Lade des HERRN. Da nahmen sie den Dagon und stellten ihn wieder an seinen Platz. 4 Als sie aber am folgenden Morgen früh aufstanden, siehe, da lag Dagon auf seinem Angesicht auf der Erde vor der Lade des HERRN; aber der Kopf Dagons und seine beiden Hände [lagen] abgehauen auf der Schwelle, nur [der Rumpf] Dagons war von ihm übrig geblieben. 5 Darum treten die Priester Dagons und alle, die in den Tempel Dagons gehen, nicht auf die Schwelle Dagons in Asdod bis zu diesem Tag. 6 Aber die Hand des HERRN lag schwer auf den Einwohnern von Asdod, und er brachte Verderben über sie und schlug Asdod und sein ganzes Gebiet mit Beulen. 7 Als aber die Leute von Asdod sahen, dass es so zuging, sprachen sie: Lasst die Lade des Gottes Israels nicht bei uns bleiben, denn seine Hand ist zu hart über uns und unserem Gott Dagon! 8 Und sie sandten [Boten] hin und versammelten alle Fürsten der Philister zu sich und sprachen: Was sollen wir mit der Lade des Gottes Israels machen? Da antworteten sie: Die Lade des Gottes Israels soll nach Gat ziehen! Und sie brachten die Lade des Gottes Israels fort. 9 Und es geschah, als sie [die Lade] hingebracht hatten, da kam die Hand des HERRN über die Stadt, sodass eine sehr große Bestürzung [entstand]; und er schlug die Leute in der Stadt, vom Kleinsten bis zum Größten, sodass an ihnen Beulen ausbrachen. 10 Da brachten sie die Lade Gottes nach Ekron. Als aber die Lade Gottes nach Ekron kam, schrien die von Ekron und sprachen: Sie haben die Lade des Gottes Israels zu uns hergebracht, um uns und unser Volk zu töten! 11 Da sandten sie [Boten] und versammelten alle Fürsten der Philister und sprachen: Sendet die Lade des Gottes Israels wieder zurück an ihren Ort, damit sie uns und unser Volk nicht tötet! Denn es war eine tödliche Bestürzung in der ganzen Stadt, und die Hand Gottes lag sehr schwer auf ihr. 12 Und die Leute, die nicht starben, wurden mit Beulen geschlagen, und das Geschrei der Stadt stieg zum Himmel empor.

The Philistines and the Ark

1 When the Philistines captured the ark of God, they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it up beside Dagon. 3 And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But when they rose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord, and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off on the threshold. Only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. 5 This is why the priests of Dagon and all who enter the house of Dagon do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day. 6 The hand of the Lord was heavy against the people of Ashdod, and he terrified and afflicted them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for his hand is hard against us and against Dagon our god.” 8 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath.” So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there. 9 But after they had brought it around, the hand of the Lord was against the city, causing a very great panic, and he afflicted the men of the city, both young and old, so that tumors broke out on them. 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But as soon as the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought around to us the ark of the God of Israel to kill us and our people.” 11 They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not kill us and our people.” For there was a deathly panic throughout the whole city. The hand of God was very heavy there. 12 The men who did not die were struck with tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
