1Und die Philister versammelten ihr ganzes Heer bei Aphek; Israel aber lagerte sich an der Quelle in Jesreel.2Und die Fürsten der Philister zogen vorüber nach Hunderten und nach Tausenden; David aber und seine Männer bildeten die Nachhut mit Achis.3Da sprachen die Fürsten der Philister: Was sollen diese Hebräer? Und Achis sprach zu den Fürsten der Philister: Das ist doch David, der Knecht Sauls, des Königs von Israel, der nun schon Jahr und Tag bei mir gewesen ist und an dem ich nicht das Geringste gefunden habe seit der Zeit, da er [von Saul] abgefallen ist, bis zu diesem Tag!4Aber die Fürsten der Philister wurden zornig auf ihn, und die Fürsten der Philister sprachen zu ihm: Lass den Mann umkehren, dass er wieder an seinen Ort kommt, wohin du ihn bestellt hast, damit er nicht mit uns zum Kampf hinabziehe und im Kampf unser Widersacher werde; denn womit könnte er seinem Herrn einen größeren Gefallen tun, als mit den Köpfen dieser Männer?5Ist er nicht derselbe David, von dem sie beim Reigen sangen und sprachen: »Saul hat seine Tausende erschlagen, David aber seine Zehntausende«?6Da rief Achis David und sprach zu ihm: So wahr der HERR lebt, ich halte dich für aufrichtig, und dein Ausgang und Eingang mit mir im Heer gefällt mir wohl; denn ich habe nichts Böses an dir gefunden seit der Zeit, da du zu mir gekommen bist, bis zu diesem Tag; aber in den Augen der Fürsten bist du nicht wohlgefällig!7So kehre nun um und geh hin in Frieden, dass du nichts Böses tust in den Augen der Fürsten der Philister!8David aber sprach zu Achis: Was habe ich denn getan, und was hast du an deinem Knecht gefunden seit der Zeit, da ich vor dir gewesen bin, bis zu diesem Tag, dass ich nicht kommen und gegen die Feinde meines Herrn, des Königs, kämpfen soll?9Und Achis antwortete und sprach zu David: Ich weiß wohl, dass du in meinen Augen wohlgefällig bist wie ein Engel Gottes; aber die Fürsten der Philister haben gesagt: Er soll nicht mit uns in den Kampf hinaufziehen!10So mache dich nun am Morgen früh auf samt den Knechten deines Herrn, die mit dir gekommen sind. Macht euch am Morgen früh auf und zieht weg, sobald es hell wird!11So machte sich David früh auf, er und seine Männer, um am Morgen wegzugehen [und] wieder in das Land der Philister zurückzukehren. Die Philister aber zogen hinauf nach Jesreel.

The Philistines Reject David
1Now the Philistines had gathered all their forces at Aphek. And the Israelites were encamped by the spring that is in Jezreel.2As the lords of the Philistines were passing on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were passing on in the rear with Achish,3the commanders of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul, king of Israel, who has been with me now for days and years, and since he deserted to me I have found no fault in him to this day.”4But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him. And the commanders of the Philistines said to him, “Send the man back, that he may return to the place to which you have assigned him. He shall not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he become an adversary to us. For how could this fellow reconcile himself to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of the men here?5Is not this David, of whom they sing to one another in dances, ‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?”6Then Achish called David and said to him, “As the Lord lives, you have been honest, and to me it seems right that you should march out and in with me in the campaign. For I have found nothing wrong in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, the lords do not approve of you.7So go back now; and go peaceably, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.”8And David said to Achish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant from the day I entered your service until now, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”9And Achish answered David and said, “I know that you are as blameless in my sight as an angel of God. Nevertheless, the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’10Now then rise early in the morning with the servants of your lord who came with you, and start early in the morning, and depart as soon as you have light.”11So David set out with his men early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. But the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
