1Und David zog von dort hinauf und blieb auf den Berghöhen von En-Gedi.2Und es geschah, als Saul von der Verfolgung der Philister zurückkehrte, da wurde ihm berichtet: Siehe, David ist in der Wüste von En-Gedi!3Und Saul nahm 3 000 auserlesene Männer aus ganz Israel und zog hin, um David samt seinen Männern zu suchen, auf den Steinbockfelsen.4Und als er zu den Schafhürden am Weg kam, war dort eine Höhle; und Saul ging hinein, um seine Füße zu bedecken.* David aber und seine Männer saßen hinten in der Höhle.5Da sprachen die Männer Davids zu ihm: Siehe, das ist der Tag, von dem der HERR zu dir gesagt hat: Siehe, ich will deinen Feind in deine Hand geben, dass du mit ihm machst, was dir gefällt! Und David stand auf und schnitt heimlich einen Zipfel von Sauls Obergewand ab.6Aber es geschah danach, da schlug ihm sein Herz, weil er den Zipfel von Sauls Obergewand abgeschnitten hatte;7und er sprach zu seinen Männern: Das lasse der HERR ferne von mir sein, dass ich so etwas tue und meine Hand an meinen Herrn, den Gesalbten des HERRN, lege; denn er ist der Gesalbte des HERRN!8So hielt David seine Männer mit diesen Worten zurück und ließ ihnen nicht zu, sich gegen Saul zu erheben. Saul aber machte sich auf aus der Höhle und ging seines Weges.9Danach machte sich auch David auf und verließ die Höhle und rief Saul nach und sprach: Mein Herr [und] König! Da sah Saul hinter sich. Und David neigte sein Angesicht zur Erde und verbeugte sich.10Und David sprach zu Saul: Warum hörst du auf die Worte der Leute, die sagen: Siehe, David sucht dein Unglück?11Siehe, an diesem Tag siehst du mit eigenen Augen, dass dich der HERR heute in der Höhle in meine Hand gegeben hat; und man sagte mir, ich solle dich töten, aber es war mir leid um dich, denn ich sprach: Ich will meine Hand nicht an meinen Herrn legen; denn er ist der Gesalbte des HERRN!12Nun sieh, mein Vater, sieh doch den Zipfel deines Obergewandes in meiner Hand! Da ich [nur] den Zipfel deines Obergewandes abschnitt und dich nicht umbrachte, so erkenne und sieh daraus, dass nichts Böses in meiner Hand ist, auch keine Übertretung; ich habe auch nicht an dir gesündigt; du aber stellst mir nach, um mir das Leben zu nehmen!13Der HERR sei Richter zwischen mir und dir; und der HERR räche mich an dir, aber meine Hand soll nicht über dir sein!14Wie man nach dem alten Sprichwort sagt: »Von den Gottlosen kommt Gottlosigkeit« — aber meine Hand soll nicht gegen dich sein!15Wen verfolgst du, König von Israel? Wem jagst du nach? Einem toten Hund! Einem Floh!16Der HERR sei Richter und entscheide zwischen mir und dir, und er sehe danach und führe meine Sache und verschaffe mir Recht von deiner Hand!17Und es geschah, als David aufgehört hatte, diese Worte zu Saul zu reden, da sprach Saul: Ist das nicht deine Stimme, mein Sohn David? Und Saul erhob seine Stimme und weinte;18und er sprach zu David: Du bist gerechter als ich; denn du hast mir mit Gutem vergolten, ich aber habe dir mit Bösem vergolten!19Und du hast heute bewiesen, dass du Gutes an mir getan hast, weil der HERR mich in deine Hand gegeben hat, und du hast mich doch nicht umgebracht.20Und wie sollte jemand seinen Feind finden und ihn friedlich seines Weges ziehen lassen? Der HERR vergelte dir Gutes für das, was du heute an mir getan hast!21Und nun siehe, ich weiß, dass du gewiss König werden wirst und dass das Königreich Israels in deiner Hand bestehen wird.22So schwöre mir nun bei dem HERRN, dass du meinen Samen* nach mir nicht ausrotten und meinen Namen nicht vertilgen wirst aus dem Haus meines Vaters!23Und David schwor dem Saul. Da zog Saul heim; David aber und seine Männer stiegen auf die Bergfeste hinauf.

David Spares Saul’s Life
1* When Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, “Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.”2Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Wildgoats’ Rocks.3And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where there was a cave, and Saul went in to relieve himself.* Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave.4And the men of David said to him, “Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’” Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.5And afterward David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.6He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord’s anointed.”7So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.8Afterward David also arose and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth and paid homage.9And David said to Saul, “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Behold, David seeks your harm’?10Behold, this day your eyes have seen how the Lord gave you today into my hand in the cave. And some told me to kill you, but I spared you.* I said, ‘I will not put out my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord’s anointed.’11See, my father, see the corner of your robe in my hand. For by the fact that I cut off the corner of your robe and did not kill you, you may know and see that there is no wrong or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, though you hunt my life to take it.12May the Lord judge between me and you, may the Lord avenge me against you, but my hand shall not be against you.13As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Out of the wicked comes wickedness.’ But my hand shall not be against you.14After whom has the king of Israel come out? After whom do you pursue? After a dead dog! After a flea!15May the Lord therefore be judge and give sentence between me and you, and see to it and plead my cause and deliver me from your hand.”16As soon as David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice and wept.17He said to David, “You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil.18And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that you did not kill me when the Lord put me into your hands.19For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safe? So may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done to me this day.20And now, behold, I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand.21Swear to me therefore by the Lord that you will not cut off my offspring after me, and that you will not destroy my name out of my father’s house.”22And David swore this to Saul. Then Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
