1Samuel aber sprach zu ganz Israel: Siehe, ich habe eurer Stimme gehorcht in allem, was ihr mir gesagt habt, und habe einen König über euch gesetzt.2Und nun siehe, da geht euer König vor euch her; ich aber bin alt und grau geworden; und siehe, meine Söhne sind bei euch. Ich aber bin vor euch hergegangen von meiner Jugend an bis zu diesem Tag.3Hier bin ich! Legt Zeugnis ab gegen mich vor dem HERRN und vor seinem Gesalbten: Wessen Ochsen habe ich genommen? Oder wessen Esel habe ich genommen? Wen habe ich übervorteilt? Wen habe ich misshandelt? Von wessen Hand habe ich Bestechungsgeld genommen, dass ich ihm zuliebe ein Auge zudrückte? So will ich es euch erstatten!4Sie sprachen: Du hast uns nie übervorteilt, noch uns unterdrückt, noch von jemandes Hand irgendetwas genommen!5Er sprach: Der HERR ist Zeuge gegen euch, und sein Gesalbter ist Zeuge am heutigen Tag, dass ihr gar nichts in meiner Hand gefunden habt! Und sie sprachen: Er ist Zeuge!6Und Samuel sprach zum Volk: Der HERR ist es, der Mose und Aaron eingesetzt und eure Väter aus dem Land Ägypten geführt hat!7So tretet nun her, dass ich mit euch rechte vor dem HERRN wegen aller gerechten Taten des HERRN, die er an euch und an euren Vätern getan hat!8Als Jakob nach Ägypten gekommen war, da schrien eure Väter zum HERRN. Und der HERR sandte Mose und Aaron, und sie führten eure Väter aus Ägypten und ließen sie an diesem Ort wohnen.9Aber sie vergaßen den HERRN, ihren Gott, und er verkaufte sie unter die Hand Siseras, des Heerführers von Hazor, und unter die Hand der Philister und unter die Hand des Königs von Moab; die kämpften gegen sie.10Sie aber schrien zum HERRN und sprachen: Wir haben gesündigt, dass wir den HERRN verlassen und den Baalen und Astarten gedient haben; nun aber errette uns aus der Hand unserer Feinde, so wollen wir dir dienen!11Da sandte der HERR Jerub-Baal und Bedan und Jephtah und Samuel und errettete euch aus den Händen eurer Feinde ringsum und ließ euch sicher wohnen.12Als ihr aber saht, dass Nahas, der König der Ammoniter, gegen euch heranzog, da spracht ihr zu mir: »Nein, sondern ein König soll über uns herrschen!«, obwohl doch der HERR, euer Gott, euer König ist.13Und nun, seht, da ist euer König, den ihr erwählt, den ihr begehrt habt; denn siehe, der HERR hat einen König über euch gesetzt!14Wenn ihr nur den HERRN fürchtet und ihm dient und seiner Stimme gehorcht und gegen den Befehl des HERRN nicht widerspenstig seid, und wenn nur ihr und euer König, der über euch herrscht, dem HERRN, eurem Gott, nachfolgt!15Wenn ihr aber der Stimme des HERRN nicht gehorcht, sondern gegen den Befehl des HERRN widerspenstig seid, so wird die Hand des HERRN gegen euch sein wie gegen eure Väter!16Jetzt aber tretet herzu und seht, was für eine große Sache der HERR vor euren Augen tun wird!17Ist nicht jetzt die Weizenernte? Ich aber will den HERRN anrufen, dass er es donnern und regnen lässt,* damit ihr erkennt und einseht, dass eure Bosheit groß ist, die ihr vor den Augen des HERRN begangen habt, indem ihr für euch einen König begehrt habt!18Da rief Samuel den HERRN an, und der HERR ließ es donnern und regnen an jenem Tag. Da fürchtete das ganze Volk den HERRN und Samuel sehr.19Und das ganze Volk sprach zu Samuel: Bitte den HERRN, deinen Gott, für deine Knechte, damit wir nicht sterben; denn zu allen unseren Sünden haben wir noch die Bosheit hinzugefügt, dass wir für uns einen König begehrten!20Samuel aber sprach zum Volk: Fürchtet euch nicht! Ihr habt zwar all dieses Böse getan; doch weicht nicht von der Nachfolge des HERRN ab, sondern dient dem HERRN von ganzem Herzen!21Und weicht nicht ab zu den nichtigen Götzen; sie nützen euch nichts und können euch nicht erretten, denn sie sind nichtig.22Der HERR aber wird um seines großen Namens willen sein Volk nicht verstoßen, denn es hat dem HERRN gefallen, euch zu seinem Volk zu machen.23Es sei aber auch ferne von mir, mich an dem HERRN zu versündigen, dass ich aufhören sollte, für euch zu beten und euch den guten und richtigen Weg zu lehren!24So fürchtet nun den HERRN und dient ihm in Wahrheit, mit eurem ganzen Herzen; denn seht, wie mächtig er sich an euch erwiesen hat!25Wenn ihr aber dennoch Böses tut, so werdet ihr samt eurem König weggerafft werden!

Samuel’s Farewell Address
1And Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have obeyed your voice in all that you have said to me and have made a king over you.2And now, behold, the king walks before you, and I am old and gray; and behold, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.3Here I am; testify against me before the Lord and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? Testify against me* and I will restore it to you.”4They said, “You have not defrauded us or oppressed us or taken anything from any man’s hand.”5And he said to them, “The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand.” And they said, “He is witness.”6And Samuel said to the people, “The Lord is witness,* who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.7Now therefore stand still that I may plead with you before the Lord concerning all the righteous deeds of the Lord that he performed for you and for your fathers.8When Jacob went into Egypt, and the Egyptians oppressed them,* then your fathers cried out to the Lord and the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and made them dwell in this place.9But they forgot the Lord their God. And he sold them into the hand of Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor,* and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab. And they fought against them.10And they cried out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord and have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. But now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, that we may serve you.’11And the Lord sent Jerubbaal and Barak* and Jephthah and Samuel and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and you lived in safety.12And when you saw that Nahash the king of the Ammonites came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when the Lord your God was your king.13And now behold the king whom you have chosen, for whom you have asked; behold, the Lord has set a king over you.14If you will fear the Lord and serve him and obey his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well.15But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you and your king.*16Now therefore stand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes.17Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call upon the Lord, that he may send thunder and rain. And you shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking for yourselves a king.”18So Samuel called upon the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.19And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king.”20And Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart.21And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty.22For the Lord will not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself.23Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way.24Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.25But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king.”
