Retorno de las tribus orientales
1Luego Josué convocó a las tribus de Rubén y Gad, y a la media tribu de Manasés,2y les dijo: «Vosotros habéis cumplido todas las órdenes que os dio Moisés, siervo del SEÑOR. Además, me habéis obedecido en cada mandato que os he dado.3Durante todo el tiempo que ha pasado, hasta este mismo día, no habéis abandonado a vuestros hermanos los israelitas. Más bien, habéis cumplido todos los mandatos del SEÑOR.4Y ahora que el SEÑOR vuestro Dios ha cumplido lo que prometió y les ha dado descanso a vuestros hermanos, regresad a vuestros hogares y a vuestras tierras que Moisés, siervo del SEÑOR, os entregó al lado oriental del río Jordán.5Y esforzaos por cumplir fielmente el mandamiento y la ley que os ordenó Moisés, siervo del SEÑOR: amad al SEÑOR vuestro Dios, conducíos de acuerdo con su voluntad, obedeced sus mandamientos, manteneos unidos firmemente a él y servidle de todo corazón y con todo vuestro ser».6Dicho esto, Josué les dio su bendición y los envió a sus hogares.7A la mitad de la tribu de Manasés, Moisés ya le había entregado el territorio de Basán; a la otra mitad, Josué le entregó el territorio que está en el lado occidental del río Jordán, donde se estableció la mayoría de los israelitas. A los primeros, Josué los envió a sus hogares, junto con las tribus de Rubén y Gad, y los bendijo8así: «Regresad a vuestros hogares repletos de bienes: oro, plata, bronce, hierro, gran cantidad de ropa y mucho ganado. Compartid con vuestros hermanos lo que le habéis arrebatado al enemigo».9Entonces los rubenitas, los gaditas y la media tribu de Manasés salieron de Siló en Canaán, donde estaban congregados todos los israelitas, y regresaron a Galaad, el territorio que habían adquirido según el mandato que el SEÑOR había dado por medio de Moisés.10Cuando llegaron a Guelilot, a orillas del río Jordán, todavía en territorio cananeo, las dos tribus y media construyeron un enorme altar.11Los demás israelitas se enteraron de que los rubenitas, los gaditas y la media tribu de Manasés habían construido aquel altar a orillas del Jordán, en pleno territorio israelita.12Entonces toda la asamblea se reunió en Siló con la intención de combatir contra las dos tribus y media.13Por tanto, los israelitas enviaron a Finés hijo del sacerdote Eleazar a la región de Galaad para hablar con esas tribus.14Con él iban diez representantes de cada una de las tribus de Israel, jefes de clanes y tribus.15Al llegar a Galaad, les dijeron a los de las dos tribus y media:16―Toda la asamblea del SEÑOR quisiera saber por qué os habéis rebelado contra el Dios de Israel como lo habéis hecho. ¿Por qué le habéis dado la espalda al SEÑOR y os habéis rebelado contra él, construyéndoos un altar?17¿Acaso no hemos aprendido ninguna lección del pecado de Peor, del cual todavía no nos hemos purificado? ¿Nada nos ha enseñado la muerte de tantos miembros del pueblo del SEÑOR?18¿Por qué insistís en darle la espalda al SEÑOR? ¡Si hoy os rebeláis contra él, mañana su ira se descargará sobre todo Israel!19Si la tierra que vosotros poseéis es impura, cruzad a esta tierra que le pertenece al SEÑOR, y en la cual se encuentra su santuario. ¡Venid, habitad entre nosotros! Pero, por favor, no os rebeléis contra él ni contra nosotros, erigiendo otro altar además del altar del SEÑOR nuestro Dios.20¿No es verdad que cuando Acán hijo de Zera pecó al hurtar de lo que estaba destinado a la destrucción, la ira de Dios se descargó sobre toda la comunidad de Israel? Recordad que Acán no fue el único que murió por su pecado.21Los de las tribus de Rubén, Gad y la media tribu de Manasés respondieron a los líderes israelitas:22―¡El SEÑOR, Dios de dioses, sí, el SEÑOR, Dios de dioses, sabe bien que no hicimos esto por rebeldía o por infidelidad! Y que todo Israel también lo sepa. Si no es así, que no se nos perdone la vida.23¡Que el SEÑOR mismo nos llame a cuentas si hemos construido nuestro propio altar para abandonarlo a él o para ofrecer alguno de los sacrificios ordenados por Moisés!24En realidad lo construimos pensando en el futuro. Tememos que algún día vuestros descendientes les digan a los nuestros: “¡El SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, no tiene nada que ver con vosotros,25descendientes de Rubén y de Gad! Entre vosotros y nosotros el SEÑOR ha puesto el río Jordán como barrera. ¡Vosotros no tenéis nada que ver con el SEÑOR!” Si esto sucediera, vuestros descendientes serían culpables de que los nuestros dejen de adorar al SEÑOR.26»Por eso decidimos construir este altar, no como altar de holocaustos y sacrificios,27sino como testimonio entre vosotros y nosotros y entre las generaciones futuras de que también nosotros podemos servir al SEÑOR y ofrecerle los distintos sacrificios en su santuario. Así, en el futuro, vuestros descendientes nunca podrán decirles a los nuestros: “Vosotros no tenéis nada que ver con el SEÑOR”.28Por tanto, convenimos que, si algún día nos dijeran eso a nosotros o a nuestros descendientes, nosotros les contestaríamos: “Mirad la réplica del altar del SEÑOR que nuestros antepasados construyeron, no para hacer sacrificios en él, sino como testimonio entre vosotros y nosotros”.29En fin, no tenemos intención alguna de rebelarnos contra el SEÑOR o de abandonarlo construyendo otro altar para holocaustos, ofrendas o sacrificios, además del que está construido a la entrada de su santuario».30Cuando escucharon lo que los rubenitas, los gaditas y la media tribu de Manasés tenían que decir, Finés el sacerdote y los jefes de clanes y de la comunidad quedaron satisfechos.31Entonces Finés hijo de Eleazar les dijo a los de esas tribus: ―Ahora estamos seguros de que el SEÑOR está en medio de nosotros, pues vosotros no pretendíais ser infieles al SEÑOR; así que nos habéis salvado del castigo divino.32Luego Finés, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, y los jefes de la nación se despidieron de los gaditas y rubenitas, y abandonaron Galaad para regresar a la tierra de Canaán con el fin de rendir su informe al resto de los israelitas.33Estos recibieron el informe con agrado y alabaron a Dios, y no hablaron más de pelear con las tribus orientales ni de destruir sus tierras.34Y los rubenitas y los gaditas le dieron al altar el nombre de«Testimonio», porque dijeron: «Entre nosotros servirá de testimonio de que el SEÑOR es Dios».

The Eastern Tribes Return Home
1At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,2and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you and have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you.3You have not forsaken your brothers these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God.4And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers, as he promised them. Therefore turn and go to your tents in the land where your possession lies, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan.5Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”6So Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents.7Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua had given a possession beside their brothers in the land west of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away to their homes and blessed them,8he said to them, “Go back to your tents with much wealth and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and with much clothing. Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.”9So the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home, parting from the people of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, their own land of which they had possessed themselves by command of the Lord through Moses.
The Eastern Tribes’ Altar of Witness
10And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size.11And the people of Israel heard it said, “Behold, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built the altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the people of Israel.”12And when the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh to make war against them.13Then the people of Israel sent to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,14and with him ten chiefs, one from each of the tribal families of Israel, every one of them the head of a family among the clans of Israel.15And they came to the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, and they said to them,16“Thus says the whole congregation of the Lord, ‘What is this breach of faith that you have committed against the God of Israel in turning away this day from following the Lord by building yourselves an altar this day in rebellion against the Lord?17Have we not had enough of the sin at Peor from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, and for which there came a plague upon the congregation of the Lord,18that you too must turn away this day from following the Lord? And if you too rebel against the Lord today then tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.19But now, if the land of your possession is unclean, pass over into the Lord’s land where the Lord’s tabernacle stands, and take for yourselves a possession among us. Only do not rebel against the Lord or make us as rebels by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of the Lord our God.20Did not Achan the son of Zerah break faith in the matter of the devoted things, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And he did not perish alone for his iniquity.’”21Then the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh said in answer to the heads of the families of Israel,22“The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows; and let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith against the Lord, do not spare us today23for building an altar to turn away from following the Lord. Or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings on it, may the Lord himself take vengeance.24No, but we did it from fear that in time to come your children might say to our children, ‘What have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel?25For the Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, you people of Reuben and people of Gad. You have no portion in the Lord.’ So your children might make our children cease to worship the Lord.26Therefore we said, ‘Let us now build an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice,27but to be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we do perform the service of the Lord in his presence with our burnt offerings and sacrifices and peace offerings, so your children will not say to our children in time to come, “You have no portion in the Lord.”’28And we thought, ‘If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, “Behold, the copy of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you.”’29Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord and turn away this day from following the Lord by building an altar for burnt offering, grain offering, or sacrifice, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle!”30When Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation, the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh spoke, it was good in their eyes.31And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is in our midst, because you have not committed this breach of faith against the Lord. Now you have delivered the people of Israel from the hand of the Lord.”32Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the chiefs, returned from the people of Reuben and the people of Gad in the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the people of Israel, and brought back word to them.33And the report was good in the eyes of the people of Israel. And the people of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of making war against them to destroy the land where the people of Reuben and the people of Gad were settled.34The people of Reuben and the people of Gad called the altar Witness, “For,” they said, “it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.”
