El amparo de Israel
1«¡Callad en mi presencia, costas lejanas! ¡Naciones, renovad vuestras fuerzas! Acercaos y hablad; reunámonos para juicio.2»¿Quién ha hecho venir desde el oriente a aquel que siempre sale victorioso? Pone a las naciones en sus manos; ante él los reyes se rinden. Con su espada los vuelve polvo, con su arco los dispersa como paja.3Con paso firme los persigue por una senda que nunca antes pisó.4¿Quién realizó esto? ¿Quién lo hizo posible? ¿Quién llamó a las generaciones desde el principio? Yo, el SEÑOR, soy el primero, y seré el mismo hasta el fin».5Lo han visto las costas lejanas, y temen; tiemblan los confines de la tierra. ¡Ya se acercan, ya vienen!6Cada uno ayuda a su compañero, e infunde aliento a su hermano.7El artesano anima al joyero; y el que martilla le dice al que golpea el yunque: «¡Es buena la soldadura!»; luego asegura el ídolo con clavos para que no se tambalee.8«Pero tú, Israel, mi siervo, tú, Jacob, a quien he escogido, simiente de Abraham, mi amigo:9Te tomé de los confines de la tierra, te llamé de los rincones más remotos, y te dije: “Tú eres mi siervo”. Yo te escogí; no te rechacé.10Así que no temas, porque yo estoy contigo; no te angusties, porque yo soy tu Dios. Te fortaleceré y te ayudaré; te sostendré con mi diestra victoriosa.11»Todos los que se enardecen contra ti sin duda serán avergonzados y humillados; los que se te oponen serán como nada, como si no existieran.12Aunque busques a tus enemigos, no los encontrarás. Los que te hacen la guerra serán como nada, como si no existieran.13Porque yo soy el SEÑOR, tu Dios, que sostiene tu mano derecha; yo soy quien te dice: “No temas, yo te ayudaré”.14No temas, gusano Jacob, pequeño Israel —afirma el SEÑOR—, porque yo mismo te ayudaré; ¡el Santo de Israel es tu redentor!15»Te convertiré en una trilladora nueva y afilada, de doble filo. Trillarás las montañas y las harás polvo; convertirás en paja las colinas.16Las aventarás y se las llevará el viento; ¡un vendaval las dispersará! Pero tú te alegrarás en el SEÑOR, te gloriarás en el Santo de Israel.17»Los pobres y los necesitados buscan agua, pero no la encuentran; la sed les ha resecado la lengua. Pero yo, el SEÑOR, les responderé; yo, el Dios de Israel, no los abandonaré.18Haré brotar ríos en las áridas cumbres, y manantiales entre los valles. Transformaré el desierto en estanques de agua, y el sequedal en manantiales.19Plantaré en el desierto cedros, acacias, mirtos y olivos; en áridas tierras plantaré cipreses, junto con pinos y abetos,20para que la gente vea y sepa, y considere y entienda, que la mano del SEÑOR ha hecho esto, que el Santo de Israel lo ha creado.21»Exponed vuestro caso —dice el SEÑOR—; presentad vuestras pruebas —demanda el rey de Jacob—.22Acercaos* y anunciad lo que ha de suceder, y cómo fueron las cosas del pasado, para que las consideremos y conozcamos su desenlace. ¡Contadnos lo que va a suceder!23Decidnos qué nos depara el futuro; así sabremos que vosotros sois dioses. Haced algo, bueno o malo, para verlo y llenarnos de terror.24¡La verdad es que vosotros no sois nada, y aun menos que nada son vuestras obras! ¡Abominable es quien os escoge!25»Del norte hice venir a uno, y acudió a mi llamado; desde el oriente invoca mi nombre. Como alfarero que amasa arcilla con los pies, aplasta gobernantes como si fueran barro.26¿Quién lo anunció desde el principio, para que lo supiéramos? ¿Quién lo anunció de antemano, para que dijéramos: “Tenía razón”? Nadie lo anunció ni lo proclamó; nadie os oyó proclamar mensaje alguno.27Yo fui el primero en decirle a Sión: “¡Mira, ya están aquí!” Yo fui quien envió a Jerusalén un mensajero de buenas noticias.28Miro entre ellos, y no hay nadie; no hay entre ellos quien aconseje, no hay quien me responda cuando les pregunto.29¡Todos ellos son falsos! Sus obras no son nada; sus ídolos no son más que viento y confusión.

Fear Not, for I Am with You
1Listen to me in silence, O coastlands; let the peoples renew their strength; let them approach, then let them speak; let us together draw near for judgment.2Who stirred up one from the east whom victory meets at every step?* He gives up nations before him, so that he tramples kings underfoot; he makes them like dust with his sword, like driven stubble with his bow.3He pursues them and passes on safely, by paths his feet have not trod.4Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he.5The coastlands have seen and are afraid; the ends of the earth tremble; they have drawn near and come.6Everyone helps his neighbor and says to his brother, “Be strong!”7The craftsman strengthens the goldsmith, and he who smooths with the hammer him who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, “It is good”; and they strengthen it with nails so that it cannot be moved.8But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend;9you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off”;10fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.11Behold, all who are incensed against you shall be put to shame and confounded; those who strive against you shall be as nothing and shall perish.12You shall seek those who contend with you, but you shall not find them; those who war against you shall be as nothing at all.13For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”14Fear not, you worm Jacob, you men of Israel! I am the one who helps you, declares the Lord; your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.15Behold, I make of you a threshing sledge, new, sharp, and having teeth; you shall thresh the mountains and crush them, and you shall make the hills like chaff;16you shall winnow them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the tempest shall scatter them. And you shall rejoice in the Lord; in the Holy One of Israel you shall glory.17When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them; I the God of Israel will not forsake them.18I will open rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the midst of the valleys. I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.19I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive. I will set in the desert the cypress, the plane and the pine together,20that they may see and know, may consider and understand together, that the hand of the Lord has done this, the Holy One of Israel has created it.
The Futility of Idols
21Set forth your case, says the Lord; bring your proofs, says the King of Jacob.22Let them bring them, and tell us what is to happen. Tell us the former things, what they are, that we may consider them, that we may know their outcome; or declare to us the things to come.23Tell us what is to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods; do good, or do harm, that we may be dismayed and terrified.*24Behold, you are nothing, and your work is less than nothing; an abomination is he who chooses you.25I stirred up one from the north, and he has come, from the rising of the sun, and he shall call upon my name; he shall trample on rulers as on mortar, as the potter treads clay.26Who declared it from the beginning, that we might know, and beforehand, that we might say, “He is right”? There was none who declared it, none who proclaimed, none who heard your words.27I was the first to say* to Zion, “Behold, here they are!” and I give to Jerusalem a herald of good news.28But when I look, there is no one; among these there is no counselor who, when I ask, gives an answer.29Behold, they are all a delusion; their works are nothing; their metal images are empty wind.
