Credincioșia lui Dumnezeu

1 Care este, atunci, superioritatea iudeului sau care este folosul circumciziei? 2 Acesta este mare în toate privințele! Mai întâi, pentru că lor le‑au fost încredințate cuvintele* lui Dumnezeu. 3 Și ce dacă unii n‑au crezut?! Va desființa oare necredincioșia lor credincioșia lui Dumnezeu? 4 În niciun caz! Dimpotrivă, Dumnezeu să fie găsit adevărat și fiecare om să fie găsit mincinos, după cum este scris: „Așa încât Tu să fii găsit drept în cuvintele Tale și să fii învingător când judeci.“* 5 Dar dacă nedreptatea noastră pune în lumină dreptatea lui Dumnezeu, ce vom zice? Nu cumva este nedrept Dumnezeu când aduce mânia? Vorbesc în felul oamenilor. 6 În niciun caz! Altfel, cum va judeca Dumnezeu lumea? 7 Iar dacă, prin minciuna mea, adevărul lui Dumnezeu sporește spre slava Lui, atunci de ce sunt judecat ca păcătos? 8 Și de ce să nu facem rele, ca să vină cele bune, așa cum suntem vorbiți de rău și cum susțin unii despre noi că spunem? Condamnarea lor este dreaptă!

Niciun om nu este drept

9 Ce urmează atunci? Suntem noi mai buni?* Nicidecum! Căci i‑am acuzat deja pe toți – atât pe iudei, cât și pe greci – că sunt sub păcat, 10 după cum este scris: „Nu există niciun om drept, niciunul măcar! 11 Nu există niciunul care să aibă pricepere! Nu există niciunul care să‑L caute pe Dumnezeu! 12 Toți s‑au rătăcit, cu toții au devenit buni de nimic! Nu mai există niciunul care să facă binele, niciunul măcar!* 13 Gâtlejul le este un mormânt deschis; cu limbile lor înșală;* sub buzele lor este venin de viperă;* 14 gura le este plină de blestem și amărăciune;* 15 picioarele lor sunt grabnice să verse sânge. 16 Pe căile lor se află prăpădul și nenorocirea 17 și n‑au cunoscut calea păcii.* 18 Nu este frică de Dumnezeu înaintea ochilor lor!“* 19 Dar știm că tot ce spune Legea, le spune celor ce sunt sub Lege, pentru ca orice gură să fie închisă și întreaga lume să fie găsită răspunzătoare înaintea lui Dumnezeu. 20 Căci „niciun om nu va fi îndreptățit înaintea Lui“* prin faptele Legii, deoarece, prin Lege, vine cunoașterea păcatului.

Dreptatea lui Dumnezeu prin credință

21 Dar acum a fost arătată o dreptate a lui Dumnezeu, fără Lege, despre care se mărturisește prin Lege și Profeți*, 22 și anume dreptatea lui Dumnezeu prin credința în Isus Cristos, pentru toți cei ce cred. Căci nu este nicio deosebire. 23 Căci toți au păcătuit și sunt lipsiți de slava lui Dumnezeu, 24 fiind îndreptățiți fără plată, prin harul Lui, prin răscumpărarea care este în Cristos Isus, 25 pe Care Dumnezeu L‑a înfățișat drept loc al ispășirii* prin credința în sângele Lui, ca dovadă a dreptății Sale, căci Dumnezeu, în îngăduința Sa, trecuse cu vederea păcatele săvârșite înainte, 26 pentru ca, în vremea de acum, să‑Și dovedească dreptatea, în așa fel încât El să fie drept și să‑l îndreptățească totodată pe cel ce are credință în Isus. 27 Și atunci, unde este lauda? A fost înlăturată! Prin ce fel de lege? A faptelor? Nu, ci prin legea credinței, 28 deoarece noi considerăm că omul este îndreptățit prin credință, fără faptele Legii. 29 Sau Dumnezeu este doar al iudeilor? Nu este și al neamurilor? Da, este și al neamurilor, 30 întrucât este un singur Dumnezeu, Care îi va îndreptăți, prin credință, pe cei circumciși și, tot prin credință, și pe cei necircumciși. 31 Atunci, oare desființăm noi Legea prin credință? În niciun caz! Dimpotrivă, noi susținem Legea.

God is faithful

1 Is there any advantage in being a Jew? Is there any value in being circumcised? 2 There is great value in every way! First of all, the Jews have been given the very words of God. 3 What if some Jews were not faithful? Will the fact that they weren’t faithful keep God from being faithful? 4 Not at all! God is true, even if every human being is a liar. It is written, ‘You are right when you sentence me. You are fair when you judge me.’ 5 Doesn’t the fact that we are wrong prove more clearly that God is right? Then what can we say? Can we say that God is not fair when he brings his anger down on us? As you can tell, I am just using human ways of thinking. 6 God is certainly fair! If he weren’t, how could he judge the world? 7 Someone might argue, ‘When I lie, it becomes clearer that God is truthful. It makes his glory shine more brightly. Why then does he find me guilty of sin?’ 8 Why not say, ‘Let’s do evil things so that good things will happen’? Some people actually lie by reporting that this is what we say. They are the ones who will rightly be found guilty.

No one is right with God

9 What should we say then? Do we Jews have any advantage? Not at all! We have already claimed that Jews and Gentiles are sinners. Everyone is under the power of sin. 10 It is written, ‘No one is right with God, no one at all. 11 No one understands. No one trusts in God. 12 All of them have turned away. They have all become worthless. No one does anything good, no one at all.’ 13 ‘Their throats are like open graves. With their tongues they tell lies.’ ‘The words from their lips are like the poison of a snake.’ 14 ‘Their mouths are full of curses and bitterness.’ 15 ‘They run quickly to commit murder. 16 They leave a trail of harmful actions. 17 They do not know how to live in peace.’ 18 ‘They don’t have any respect for God.’ 19 What the law says, it says to those who are ruled by the law. Its purpose is to shut every mouth and make the whole world accountable to God. 20 So no one will be considered right with God by obeying the law. Instead, the law makes us more aware of our sin.

Becoming right with God by faith

21 But now God has shown us his saving power without the help of the law. But the Law and the Prophets tell us about this. 22 We are made right with God by putting our faith in Jesus Christ. This happens to all who believe. It is no different for the Jews than for the Gentiles. 23 Everyone has sinned. No one measures up to God’s glory. 24 The free gift of God’s grace makes us right with him. Christ Jesus paid the price to set us free. 25 God gave Christ as a sacrifice to pay for sins through the spilling of his blood. So God forgives the sins of those who have faith. God did all this to prove that he does what is right. He is a God of mercy. So he did not punish for their sins the people who lived before Jesus lived. 26 God did all this to prove in our own time that he does what is right. He also makes right with himself those who believe in Jesus. 27 So who can boast? No one! Are people saved by the law that requires them to obey? Not at all! They are saved because of the law that requires faith. 28 We firmly believe that a person is made right with God because of their faith. They are not saved by obeying the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Isn’t he also the God of Gentiles? Yes, he is their God too. 30 There is only one God. When those who are circumcised believe in him, he makes them right with himself. Suppose those who are not circumcised believe in him. Then God also will make them right with himself. 31 Does faith make the law useless? Not at all! We agree with the law.
