Desemnarea cetăților levitice

1 Căpeteniile de familie ale leviților s‑au apropiat de preotul Elazar, de Iosua, fiul lui Nun, și de căpeteniile de familie ale semințiilor fiilor lui Israel,

2 la Șilo, în țara Canaan, și le‑au vorbit, zicând: „DOMNUL a poruncit prin Moise să ni se dea cetăți de locuit și pășuni pentru animalele noastre.“

3 Atunci fiii lui Israel le‑au dat leviților, pe teritoriul moștenirii lor, următoarele cetăți cu pășunile din jur, așa cum poruncise DOMNUL.

4 O parte a ieșit la sorți pentru clanurile chehatiților. Acestor leviți, urmași ai preotului Aaron, li s‑au dat prin sorți treisprezece cetăți din seminția lui Iuda, din seminția lui Simeon și din seminția lui Beniamin.

5 Urmașilor lui Chehat care au mai rămas, li s‑au dat prin sorți zece cetăți ale clanurilor din seminția lui Efraim, din seminția lui Dan și din jumătatea seminției lui Manase.

6 Fiilor lui Gherșon li s‑au dat prin sorți treisprezece cetăți ale clanurilor din seminția lui Isahar, din seminția lui Așer, din seminția lui Neftali și din jumătatea seminției lui Manase, care ocupa Bașanul.

7 Fiilor lui Merari, potrivit clanurilor lor, li s‑au dat douăsprezece cetăți din seminția lui Ruben, din seminția lui Gad și din seminția lui Zabulon.

8 Astfel, fiii lui Israel le‑au dat leviților prin sorți cetățile acestea cu pășunile din jur, așa cum poruncise DOMNUL prin Moise.

9 Din seminția fiilor lui Iuda și din seminția fiilor lui Simeon au dat următoarele cetăți menționate pe nume,

10 cetăți care au revenit urmașilor lui Aaron din clanurile chehatiților (urmașii lui Levi), căci ei au ieșit primii la sorți:

11 le‑au dat Chiriat-Arba (Hebron) – Arba fusese tatăl lui Anac – cu pășunile din jur, pe muntele lui Iuda;

12 însă câmpia cetății și satele dimprejurul ei i‑au fost date ca moștenire, lui Caleb, fiul lui Iefune.

13 Au dat deci urmașilor preotului Aaron cetatea de refugiu pentru ucigași, Hebronul, cu pășunile din jur, precum și Libna cu pășunile din jur,

14 Iatir cu pășunile din jur, Eștemoa cu pășunile din jur,

15 Holon cu pășunile din jur, Debir cu pășunile din jur,

16 Ayin cu pășunile din jur, Iuta cu pășunile din jur și Bet‑Șemeș cu pășunile din jur – nouă cetăți pe teritoriul acestor două seminții;

17 din seminția lui Beniamin le‑au dat: Ghivon cu pășunile din jur, Gheva cu pășunile din jur,

18 Anatot cu pășunile din jur și Almon cu pășunile din jur – patru cetăți.

19 Toate cetățile preoților, urmașii lui Aaron, cu pășunile din jurul lor erau în număr de treisprezece.

20 Celorlalți leviți care au mai rămas din clanurile urmașilor lui Chehat, li s‑au dat prin sorți cetăți din seminția lui Efraim:

21 Le‑au dat Șehem, cetatea de refugiu pentru ucigași, cu pășunile din jur, în muntele lui Efraim, Ghezer cu pășunile din jur,

22 Chibțayim cu pășunile din jur și Bet‑Horon cu pășunile din jur – patru cetăți;

23 Din seminția lui Dan le‑au dat: Elteke cu pășunile din jur, Ghibeton cu pășunile din jur,

24 Aialon cu pășunile din jur și Gat‑Rimon cu pășunile din jur – patru cetăți;

25 Din jumătatea seminției lui Manase le‑au dat: Taanah cu pășunile din jur și Ibleam cu pășunile din jur – două cetăți.

26 Toate cetățile date clanurilor care au rămas din urmașii lui Chehat, cu pășunile din jur, erau în număr de zece.

27 Fiilor lui Gherșon, unul din clanurile leviților, le‑au fost date, din jumătatea seminției lui Manase, următoarele: Golan, cetatea de refugiu pentru ucigași, care era în Bașan, cu pășunile din jur și Aștarot*, cu pășunile din jur – două cetăți;

28 din seminția lui Isahar le‑au dat: Kișion cu pășunile din jur, Dabrat cu pășunile din jur,

29 Iarmut cu pășunile din jur și En‑Ganim cu pășunile din jur – patru cetăți;

30 din seminția lui Așer le‑au dat: Mișal cu pășunile din jur, Abdon cu pășunile din jur,

31 Helkat cu pășunile din jur și Rehob cu pășunile din jur – patru cetăți;

32 din seminția lui Neftali le‑au dat: Kedeș, cetatea de refugiu pentru ucigași, care era în Galileea, cu pășunile din jur, Hamot‑Dor* cu pășunile din jur și Kartan* cu pășunile din jur – trei cetăți.

33 Toate cetățile clanurilor gherșoniților erau în număr de treisprezece, fiecare cetate cu pășunile din jur.

34 Celorlalți leviți care au mai rămas din clanurile urmașilor lui Merari, le‑au fost date următoarele: pe teritoriul seminției lui Zabulon le‑au dat: Iokneam cu pășunile din jur, Karta cu pășunile din jur,

35 Dimna cu pășunile din jur și Nahalal cu pășunile din jur – patru cetăți;

36 din seminția lui Ruben le‑au dat: Bețer cu pășunile din jur, Iahaț cu pășunile din jur,

37 Chedemot cu pășunile din jur și Mefaat cu pășunile din jur – patru cetăți;

38 din seminția lui Gad le‑au dat: Ramot, cetatea de refugiu pentru ucigași, care era în Ghilad, cu pășunile din jur, Mahanayim cu pășunile din jur,

39 Heșbon cu pășunile din jur și Iazer cu pășunile din jur – în total patru cetăți.

40 Toate cetățile date clanurilor urmașilor lui Merari, adică clanurilor leviților care mai rămăseseră, erau în număr de douăsprezece.

41 Toate cetățile leviților care erau pe teritoriul fiilor lui Israel, împreună cu pășunile din jur, erau în număr de patruzeci și opt.

42 Fiecare din aceste cetăți își avea pășunile ei de jur împrejur; așa era fiecare dintre aceste cetăți.

Împlinirea promisiunilor

43 DOMNUL a dat astfel lui Israel toată țara pe care a jurat părinților lor că le‑o va da, iar ei au luat‑o în stăpânire și au locuit în ea.

44 DOMNUL le‑a dat odihnă din toate părțile, așa cum jurase părinților lor. Nimeni nu le‑a putut sta împotrivă. DOMNUL i‑a dat pe toți dușmanii în mâna lor.

45 Nu a rămas neîmplinit niciunul din lucrurile bune pe care DOMNUL le‑a promis Casei lui Israel. Toate s‑au împlinit.

Towns are given to the Levites

1 The leaders of the Levite family groups approached Eleazar the priest and Joshua, the son of Nun. They also approached the leaders of the family groups of Israel’s other tribes.

2 They went to all of them at Shiloh in Canaan. They said to them, ‘Give us towns to live in. Also give us grasslands for our livestock. That’s what the LORD commanded through Moses.’

3 So the Israelites gave the Levites towns and grasslands out of their own shares of land. They did what the LORD had commanded. Here are the towns the Levites were given.

4 The first lot drawn out was for the people of Kohath, according to their family groups. Some of the Levites came from the family line of Aaron the priest. They were given 13 towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.

5 The rest of Kohath’s family groups were given ten towns. Those towns were from the family groups of the tribes of Ephraim and Dan and half of the tribe of Manasseh.

6 The family groups of Gershon were given 13 towns. Those towns were from the family groups of the tribes of Issachar, Asher and Naphtali and half of the tribe of Manasseh. That part of Manasseh was in the land of Bashan.

7 The family groups of Merari received 12 towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun. Each family group received its share.

8 So the Israelites gave those towns and their grasslands to the Levites. They did what the LORD had commanded through Moses.

9 Some towns were given from the territories of the tribes of Judah and Simeon.

10 The Israelites gave them to the members of the family line of Aaron. The towns were given to the family groups of Kohath. They were Levites. The first lot drawn out was for them. Here are the towns the family groups of Kohath were given.

11 The Israelites gave them Kiriath Arba and the grasslands around it. Kiriath Arba is also called Hebron. It’s in the hill country of Judah. Anak came from the family line of Arba.

12 But Israel had already given away the fields and villages around the city. They had given them to Caleb as his share. Caleb was the son of Jephunneh.

13 So they gave Hebron to the members of the family line of Aaron the priest. Hebron was a city where anyone charged with murder could go for safety. They also gave them Libnah,

14 Jattir, Eshtemoa,

15 Holon, Debir,

16 Ain, Juttah and Beth Shemesh. They gave those towns and their grasslands to the family groups of Kohath. The total number of towns from the tribes of Judah and Simeon came to nine.

17 The Israelites gave some towns from the tribe of Benjamin to the family groups of Kohath. The towns were Gibeon, Geba,

18 Anathoth and Almon. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.

19 So the total number of towns and their grasslands given to the priests in Aaron’s family line came to 13.

20 There were other family groups of Kohath among the Levites. They were given towns from the tribe of Ephraim. Here are the towns those other family groups of Kohath were given.

21 In the hill country of Ephraim they were given Shechem. It was a city where anyone charged with murder could go for safety. They were also given Gezer,

22 Kibzaim and Beth Horon. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.

23 From the tribe of Dan they received Eltekeh, Gibbethon,

24 Aijalon and Gath Rimmon. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.

25 From half of the tribe of Manasseh they received Taanach and Gath Rimmon. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to two.

26 So all these ten towns and their grasslands were given to the other family groups of Kohath.

27 Here are the towns given to the family groups of Gershon among the Levites. From half of the tribe of Manasseh they received Golan in the land of Bashan. Golan was a city where anyone charged with murder could go for safety. They also received Be Eshterah. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to two.

28 From the tribe of Issachar they received Kishion, Daberath,

29 Jarmuth and En Gannim. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.

30 From the tribe of Asher they received Mishal, Abdon,

31 Helkath and Rehob. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.

32 From the tribe of Naphtali they received Kedesh in Galilee. Kedesh was a city where anyone charged with murder could go for safety. They also received Hammoth Dor and Kartan. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to three.

33 So the total number of towns and their grasslands given to the family groups of Gershon came to 13.

34 The rest of the Levites were from the family groups of Merari. Here are the towns they were given. From the tribe of Zebulun they received Jokneam, Kartah,

35 Dimnah and Nahalal. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.

36 From the tribe of Reuben they received Bezer, Jahaz,

37 Kedemoth and Mephaath. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.

38 From the tribe of Gad they received Ramoth in Gilead. Ramoth was a city where anyone charged with murder could go for safety. They also received Mahanaim,

39 Heshbon and Jazer. The total number of these towns and their grasslands came to four.

40 So the total number of towns given to the family groups of Merari came to 12. That concludes the list of towns the rest of the Levites received.

41 The total number of Levite towns and their grasslands in the territory given to Israel came to 48.

42 Each of those towns had grasslands around it. That was true of all of them.

43 So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had promised to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And Israel took it over. Then they made their homes there.

44 The LORD gave them peace and rest on every side. He had promised their people of long ago that he would do that. Not one of Israel’s enemies was able to fight against them and win. The LORD handed all their enemies over to them.

45 The LORD kept all the good promises he had made to the Israelites. Every one of them came true.
