1 Zedechia, fiul lui Iosia, pe care Nebucadnețar, împăratul Babilonului, l‑a făcut rege în țara lui Iuda, a domnit în locul lui Iehoiachin, fiul lui Iehoiachim. 2 Dar nici el, nici slujitorii lui, nici poporul din țară nu au ascultat cuvintele DOMNULUI, rostite de profetul Ieremia. 3 Regele Zedechia a trimis pe Iehucal, fiul lui Șelemia, și pe preotul Țefania, fiul lui Maaseia, la profetul Ieremia să‑i spună: „Te rugăm, mijlocește pentru noi înaintea DOMNULUI, Dumnezeul nostru.“ 4 Pe atunci, Ieremia era liber să umble prin popor, căci încă nu fusese aruncat în temniță. 5 Armata lui Faraon ieșise din Egipt, iar când caldeenii, care asediau Ierusalimul, au auzit vestea aceasta, s‑au retras din Ierusalim. 6 Cuvântul DOMNULUI i‑a vorbit profetului Ieremia, zicând: 7 „Așa vorbește DOMNUL, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Să vorbiți astfel regelui lui Iuda care v‑a trimis la Mine să Mă întrebe: ‘Iată că armata lui Faraon, care a ieșit să vă ajute, se va întoarce în țara ei, în Egipt, 8 iar caldeenii vor reveni și vor lupta împotriva acestei cetăți. Ei o vor cuceri și îi vor da foc.’» 9 Așa vorbește DOMNUL: «Nu vă înșelați singuri, zicând: ‘Caldeenii se vor depărta cu totul de la noi!’, căci ei nu se vor depărta. 10 Și chiar dacă ați învinge întreaga armată a caldeenilor, care se luptă împotriva voastră, și ar mai rămâne dintre ei doar câțiva oameni răniți în corturile lor, tot se vor ridica și vor da foc acestei cetăți!»“ 11 După ce armata caldeenilor s‑a retras din fața Ierusalimului din cauza armatei lui Faraon, 12 Ieremia a vrut să iasă din Ierusalim ca să meargă în teritoriul lui Beniamin, pentru a intra în posesia proprietății pe care o avea în mijlocul poporului de acolo. 13 Când profetul Ieremia a ajuns însă la Poarta lui Beniamin, căpitanul gărzilor, al cărui nume era Ireia, fiul lui Șelemia, fiul lui Hanania, a pus mâna pe el, zicând: – Tu vrei să dezertezi la caldeeni! 14 Ieremia a răspuns: – Este o minciună! Nu vreau să dezertez la caldeeni. Dar Ireia nu l‑a ascultat, ci l‑a înșfăcat și l‑a dus înaintea conducătorilor. 15 Aceștia s‑au mâniat pe Ieremia, l‑au bătut și l‑au întemnițat în casa scribului Ionatan pe care o transformaseră în temniță. 16 Ieremia a fost pus într‑o celulă subterană a temniței* și acolo a stat multă vreme. 17 Apoi regele Zedechia a trimis după el, iar Ieremia a fost adus la palat. Acolo regele l‑a întrebat în secret: – Ai vreun cuvânt din partea DOMNULUI? Ieremia a răspuns: – Da. Apoi a zis: – Vei fi dat în mâinile împăratului Babilonului. 18 Atunci Ieremia i‑a zis regelui Zedechia: – Cu ce am greșit față de tine, față de slujitorii tăi și față de poporul acesta de m‑ați aruncat în temniță? 19 Unde vă sunt profeții care profețeau că împăratul Babilonului nu va veni împotriva voastră și împotriva țării acesteia? 20 Acum, o, rege, stăpânul meu, ascultă‑mă te rog! Fie bine primită cererea mea înaintea ta! Nu mă trimite înapoi în casa scribului Ionatan, ca nu cumva să mor acolo! 21 Regele Zedechia a poruncit ca Ieremia să fie pus în curtea temniței și să i se dea în fiecare zi pâine de pe Strada Brutarilor, până când avea să se termine toată pâinea din cetate. Jeremiah is put in prison

1 Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, appointed Zedekiah to be king of Judah. He was the son of Josiah. Zedekiah ruled in place of Jehoiachin, the son of Jehoiakim. 2 Zedekiah and his attendants didn’t pay any attention to what the LORD had said through Jeremiah the prophet. And the people of the land didn’t pay any attention either. 3 But King Zedekiah sent Jehukal to Jeremiah the prophet. Zedekiah sent Zephaniah the priest along with him. Jehukal was the son of Shelemiah. Zephaniah was the son of Maaseiah. Jehukal and Zephaniah brought the king’s message to Jeremiah. It said, ‘Please pray to the LORD our God for us.’ 4 At that time Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people. Jeremiah had not yet been put in prison. 5 The armies of Babylon were attacking Jerusalem. They received a report that Pharaoh’s army had marched out of Egypt to help Zedekiah. So armies of Babylon pulled back from Jerusalem. 6 A message from the LORD came to Jeremiah. 7 The LORD is the God of Israel. He says, ‘The king of Judah has sent you to ask me for advice. Tell him, “Pharaoh’s army has marched out to help you. But it will go back to its own land. It will return to Egypt. 8 Then the armies of Babylon will come back here. They will attack this city. They will capture it. Then they will burn it down.” 9 ‘The LORD says, “Do not fool yourselves. You think, ‘The Babylonians will leave us alone.’ But they will not! 10 Suppose you destroy all the armies of Babylon that are attacking you. Suppose only wounded men are left in their tents. Even then they will come out and burn down this city.” ’ 11 The armies of Babylon had pulled back from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army. 12 So Jeremiah started to leave the city. He was planning to go to the territory of Benjamin. Jeremiah wanted to get his share of the property among the people there. 13 He got as far as the Benjamin Gate. But the captain of the guard arrested him. He said, ‘You are going over to the side of the Babylonians!’ The captain’s name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah. Shelemiah was the son of Hananiah. 14 Jeremiah said to Irijah, ‘That isn’t true! I’m not going to the side of the Babylonians.’ But Irijah wouldn’t listen to him. Instead, he arrested Jeremiah. He brought Jeremiah to the officials. 15 They were angry with him. So they had him beaten. Then they took him to the house of Jonathan the secretary. It had been made into a prison. That’s where they put Jeremiah. 16 Jeremiah was put into a prison cell below ground level. He remained there a long time. 17 Then King Zedekiah sent for him. King Zedekiah had Jeremiah brought to the palace. There the king spoke to him in private. The king asked, ‘Do you have a message from the LORD for me?’ ‘Yes’, Jeremiah replied. ‘You will be handed over to the king of Babylon.’ 18 Then Jeremiah continued, ‘Why have you put me in prison? What crime have I committed against you? What have I done to your attendants or these people? 19 Where are your prophets who prophesied to you? They said, “The king of Babylon won’t attack you. He won’t march into this land.” 20 But now please listen, my king and master. Let me make my appeal to you. Please don’t send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary. If you do, I’ll die there.’ 21 Then King Zedekiah gave the order. His men put Jeremiah in the courtyard of the guard. They gave him a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers. They did it every day until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
