Despărțirea lui Avram de Lot

1 Avram s‑a suit din Egipt în Neghev* împreună cu soția lui și cu tot ce avea, iar Lot a mers împreună cu el. 2 Avram era foarte bogat în turme, în argint și în aur. 3 Din Neghev, el a călătorit până la Betel, până la locul în care fusese cortul lui la început, între Betel și Ai, 4 până la locul în care el făcuse un altar mai înainte. Acolo, Avram a chemat Numele DOMNULUI. 5 Lot, care a mers împreună cu Avram, avea și el turme, cirezi și corturi. 6 Dar ținutul locuit nu‑i mai încăpea. Aveau atât de multe bunuri, încât nu mai puteau locui împreună. 7 De asemenea, s‑a iscat o ceartă între păstorii turmelor lui Avram și păstorii turmelor lui Lot. În vremea aceea canaaniții și periziții locuiau în Canaan. 8 Atunci Avram i‑a zis lui Lot: „Te rog, să nu fie ceartă între mine și tine, nici între păstorii mei și păstorii tăi, căci suntem frați*. 9 Nu este oare toată țara înaintea ta? Desparte‑te de mine, te rog! Dacă tu o iei la stânga, eu o voi lua la dreapta, iar dacă tu o iei la dreapta, eu o voi lua la stânga.“ 10 Lot și‑a ridicat ochii și a văzut că toată Câmpia Iordanului până la Țoar era bine udată în întregime, precum grădina DOMNULUI, precum țara Egiptului. Aceasta s‑a întâmplat înainte ca DOMNUL să fi distrus Sodoma și Gomora. 11 Lot și‑a ales toată Câmpia Iordanului și a pornit spre răsărit. Astfel, ei s‑au despărțit unul de celălalt. 12 Avram a locuit în țara Canaan, iar Lot a locuit între cetățile câmpiei și și‑a așezat cortul aproape de Sodoma. 13 Oamenii din Sodoma erau răi, foarte păcătoși înaintea DOMNULUI. 14 DOMNUL i‑a zis lui Avram după ce Lot s‑a despărțit de el: „Ridică‑ți ochii acum și, din locul în care ești, privește spre nord și spre sud, spre răsărit și spre apus, 15 pentru că toată țara pe care o vezi ți‑o voi da ție și seminței* tale pentru totdeauna. 16 Îți voi face sămânța ca pulberea pământului, astfel încât, dacă cineva poate număra pulberea pământului, și sămânța ta va putea fi numărată. 17 Ridică‑te, străbate țara în lung și în lat, pentru că ție ți‑o voi da.“ 18 Astfel, Avram și‑a mutat cortul și a venit să locuiască lângă stejarii lui Mamre, în Hebron, unde a zidit un altar DOMNULUI.

Abram and Lot separate

1 Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev Desert. He took his wife and everything he had. Lot went with him. 2 Abram had become very rich. He had a lot of livestock and silver and gold. 3 Abram left the Negev Desert. He went from place to place until he came to Bethel. Then he came to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier. 4 There he called on the name of the LORD at the altar he had built. 5 Lot was moving around with Abram. Lot also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 But the land didn’t have enough food for both Abram and Lot. They had large herds and many servants, so they weren’t able to stay together. 7 The people who took care of Abram’s herds and those who took care of Lot’s herds began to argue. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time. 8 So Abram said to Lot, ‘Let’s not argue with each other. The people taking care of your herds and those taking care of mine shouldn’t argue with one another either. After all, we’re part of the same family. 9 Isn’t the whole land in front of you? Let’s separate. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right. If you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.’ 10 Lot looked around. He saw that the whole River Jordan valley towards the town of Zoar had plenty of water. It was like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. 11 So Lot chose the whole River Jordan valley for himself. Then he started out towards the east. The two men separated. 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan. Lot lived among the cities of the River Jordan valley. He set up his tents near Sodom. 13 The people of Sodom were evil. They were sinning greatly against the LORD. 14 The LORD spoke to Abram after Lot had left him. He said, ‘Look around from where you are. Look north and south, east and west. 15 I will give you all the land you see. I will give it for ever to you and your family who comes after you. 16 I will make them like the dust of the earth. Can dust be counted? If it can, then your family can be counted. 17 Go! Walk through the land. See how long and wide it is. I am giving it to you.’ 18 So Abram went to live near the large trees of Mamre at Hebron. There he pitched his tents and built an altar to honour the LORD.
