1‘And now, you priests, this warning is for you.2If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honour my name,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honour me.3‘Because of you I will rebuke your descendants*; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it.4And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi may continue,’ says the Lord Almighty.5‘My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name.6True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.7‘For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.8But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,’ says the Lord Almighty.9‘So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.’
Breaking covenant through divorce
10Do we not all have one Father*? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our ancestors by being unfaithful to one another?11Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god.12As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the Lord remove him from the tents of Jacob* – even though he brings an offering to the Lord Almighty.13Another thing you do: you flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favour on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.14You ask, ‘Why?’ It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.15Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring.* So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.16‘The man who hates and divorces his wife,’ says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘does violence to the one he should protect,’* says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.
Breaking covenant through injustice
17You have wearied the Lord with your words. ‘How have we wearied him?’ you ask. By saying, ‘All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them’ or ‘Where is the God of justice?’

1Und nun, ihr Priester, dieses Gebot gilt euch!2Wenn ihr nicht hören wollt und ihr es euch nicht zu Herzen nehmt, meinem Namen die Ehre zu geben, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen, so schleudere ich den Fluch gegen euch und verfluche eure Segenssprüche; und ich habe sie auch schon verflucht, denn ihr nehmt es nicht zu Herzen!3Siehe, ich schelte euch die Saat und will euch Kot ins Angesicht streuen, den Kot eurer Feste, und man wird euch zu ihm hintragen;4und ihr sollt erkennen, dass ich euch dieses Gebot gesandt habe, damit mein Bund mit Levi bestehe!, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.5Mein Bund mit ihm war Leben und Friede, und ich verlieh ihm beides, damit er [mich] fürchtete, und er fürchtete mich auch und hatte Ehrfurcht vor meinem Namen.6Das Gesetz der Wahrheit war in seinem Mund, und nichts Verkehrtes wurde auf seinen Lippen gefunden; er wandelte mit mir in Frieden und Aufrichtigkeit, und viele brachte er zur Umkehr von der Missetat.7Denn die Lippen des Priesters sollen die Erkenntnis bewahren, und aus seinem Mund soll man das Gesetz erfragen; denn er ist ein Bote des HERRN der Heerscharen.8Ihr aber seid vom Weg abgewichen; ihr seid schuld, dass viele im Gesetz zu Fall gekommen sind, ihr habt den Bund mit Levi missbraucht!, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen.9Darum habe auch ich euch beim ganzen Volk verächtlich und unwert gemacht, weil ihr meine Wege nicht bewahrt, sondern bei Anwendung des Gesetzes die Person anseht.
Scharfer Tadel wegen Mischehen und Ehescheidung
10Haben wir nicht alle einen Vater? Hat uns nicht ein Gott erschaffen? Warum sind wir denn so treulos, einer gegen den anderen, und entweihen den Bund unserer Väter?11Juda hat treulos gehandelt und einen Gräuel verübt in Israel und Jerusalem; denn Juda hat das Heiligtum des HERRN entweiht, das er liebte, und hat die Tochter eines fremden Gottes* geheiratet.12Der HERR wird den Mann, der so etwas tut, ausrotten aus den Zelten Jakobs, was sich regt und redet, auch den, der dem HERRN der Heerscharen eine Opfergabe darbringt!13Und zum anderen tut ihr auch das: Ihr bedeckt den Altar des HERRN mit Tränen, mit Weinen und Seufzen, sodass er sich nicht mehr zu der Opfergabe wenden und sie nicht mit Wohlgefallen aus euren Händen annehmen mag.14Und ihr fragt: »Warum?« Weil der HERR Zeuge war zwischen dir und der Frau deiner Jugend, der du nun untreu geworden bist, obwohl sie deine Gefährtin und die Frau deines Bundes* ist!15Und hat Er sie nicht eins gemacht, ein Überrest des Geistes für Ihn? Und wonach soll das eine trachten? Nach göttlichem Samen!* So hütet euch denn in eurem Geist, und niemand werde der Frau seiner Jugend untreu!16Denn ich hasse die Ehescheidung, spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels, und dass man sein Gewand mit Frevel bedeckt, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen; darum hütet euch in eurem Geist und werdet nicht untreu!17Ihr habt dem HERRN Mühe gemacht mit euren Reden; und ihr fragt noch: »Womit haben wir ihm denn Mühe gemacht?« Damit, dass ihr sagt: »Jeder, der Böses tut, der ist gut in den Augen des HERRN, und an solchen hat er Wohlgefallen — oder wo ist der Gott des Gerichts?«
