Land allotted to Judah

1 The land allotted to the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom, to the Desert of Zin in the extreme south. 2 Their southern boundary started from the bay at the southern end of the Dead Sea, 3 crossed south of Scorpion Pass, continued on to Zin and went over to the south of Kadesh Barnea. Then it ran past Hezron up to Addar and curved around to Karka. 4 It then passed along to Azmon and joined the Wadi of Egypt, ending at the Mediterranean Sea. This is their* southern boundary. 5 The eastern boundary is the Dead Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan. The northern boundary started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan, 6 went up to Beth Hoglah and continued north of Beth Arabah to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben. 7 The boundary then went up to Debir from the Valley of Achor and turned north to Gilgal, which faces the Pass of Adummim south of the gorge. It continued along to the waters of En Shemesh and came out at En Rogel. 8 Then it ran up the Valley of Ben Hinnom along the southern slope of the Jebusite city (that is, Jerusalem). From there it climbed to the top of the hill west of the Hinnom Valley at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim. 9 From the hilltop the boundary headed towards the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, came out at the towns of Mount Ephron and went down towards Baalah (that is, Kiriath Jearim). 10 Then it curved westward from Baalah to Mount Seir, ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Kesalon), continued down to Beth Shemesh and crossed to Timnah. 11 It went to the northern slope of Ekron, turned towards Shikkeron, passed along to Mount Baalah and reached Jabneel. The boundary ended at the sea. 12 The western boundary is the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans. 13 In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah – Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.) 14 From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites – Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, the sons of Anak. 15 From there he marched against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). 16 And Caleb said, ‘I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.’ 17 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage. 18 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him* to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, ‘What can I do for you?’ 19 She replied, ‘Do me a special favour. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.’ So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs. 20 This is the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, according to its clans: 21 The southernmost towns of the tribe of Judah in the Negev towards the boundary of Edom were: Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur, 22 Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, 23 Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan, 24 Ziph, Telem, Bealoth, 25 Hazor Hadattah, Kerioth Hezron (that is, Hazor), 26 Amam, Shema, Moladah, 27 Hazar Gaddah, Heshmon, Beth Pelet, 28 Hazar Shual, Beersheba, Biziothiah, 29 Baalah, Iyim, Ezem, 30 Eltolad, Kesil, Hormah, 31 Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah, 32 Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain and Rimmon – a total of twenty-nine towns and their villages. 33 In the western foothills: Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah, 34 Zanoah, En Gannim, Tappuah, Enam, 35 Jarmuth, Adullam, Sokoh, Azekah, 36 Shaaraim, Adithaim and Gederah (or Gederothaim)* – fourteen towns and their villages. 37 Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal Gad, 38 Dilean, Mizpah, Joktheel, 39 Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon, 40 Kabbon, Lahmas, Kitlish, 41 Gederoth, Beth Dagon, Naamah and Makkedah – sixteen towns and their villages. 42 Libnah, Ether, Ashan, 43 Iphtah, Ashnah, Nezib, 44 Keilah, Akzib and Mareshah – nine towns and their villages. 45 Ekron, with its surrounding settlements and villages; 46 west of Ekron, all that were in the vicinity of Ashdod, together with their villages; 47 Ashdod, its surrounding settlements and villages; and Gaza, its settlements and villages, as far as the Wadi of Egypt and the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. 48 In the hill country: Shamir, Jattir, Sokoh, 49 Dannah, Kiriath Sannah (that is, Debir), 50 Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim, 51 Goshen, Holon and Giloh – eleven towns and their villages. 52 Arab, Dumah, Eshan, 53 Janim, Beth Tappuah, Aphekah, 54 Humtah, Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) and Zior – nine towns and their villages. 55 Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Juttah, 56 Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah, 57 Kain, Gibeah and Timnah – ten towns and their villages. 58 Halhul, Beth Zur, Gedor, 59 Maarath, Beth Anoth and Eltekon – six towns and their villages.* 60 Kiriath Baal (that is, Kiriath Jearim) and Rabbah – two towns and their villages. 61 In the wilderness: Beth Arabah, Middin, Sekakah, 62 Nibshan, the City of Salt and En Gedi – six towns and their villages. 63 Judah could not dislodge the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the people of Judah.

1 Und das Los des Stammes der Söhne Judas nach ihren Geschlechtern lag an der Grenze von Edom, der Wüste Zin, nach Süden, am südlichsten Ende. 2 Und ihre südliche Grenze beginnt am Ende des Salzmeeres, bei der Zunge, die nach Süden reicht,* 3 und sie erstreckt sich gegen Süden zum Skorpionensteig und hinüber nach Zin und wieder gegen Süden nach Kadesch-Barnea hinauf und nach Hezron hin und nach Adar hinauf und wendet sich nach Karka; 4 dann geht sie hinüber nach Azmon und hinaus an den Bach Ägyptens, sodass das Meer* das Ende der Grenze bildet. Das sei eure südliche Grenze! 5 Und die östliche Grenze ist das Salzmeer bis zur Mündung des Jordan. Die Grenze an der Nordseite aber beginnt bei der Zunge des Meeres an der Mündung des Jordan* 6 und geht hinauf nach Beth-Hogla und zieht sich hinüber gegen Norden nach Beth-Arava; und die Grenze steigt hinauf zum Stein Bohans, des Sohnes Rubens, 7 und die Grenze steigt hinauf von dem Tal Achor nach Debir und wendet sich nördlich nach Gilgal, gegenüber Maale-Adummim, das südlich an dem Bach liegt. Danach geht die Grenze zu dem Wasser En-Schemesch und erstreckt sich nach En-Rogel, 8 und die Grenze geht danach hinauf zum Tal des Sohnes Hinnoms,* zum Bergrücken der Jebusiter gegen Süden, das ist Jerusalem;* und sie geht hinauf zur Spitze des Berges, der westlich vor dem Tal Hinnom liegt und nördlich an das Ende des Tales der Rephaiter stößt. 9 Danach wendet sich die Grenze von der Spitze desselben Berges hin zu der Quelle des Wassers Nephtoach und gelangt zu den Städten des Berglandes Ephron und wendet sich nach Baala, das ist Kirjat-Jearim. 10 Und die Grenze wendet sich herum von Baala gegen Westen zum Bergland Seir und geht hinüber nach dem nördlichen Bergrücken Jearim, das ist Kesalon, und kommt herab nach Beth-Schemesch und geht nach Timna; 11 sodann läuft die Grenze weiter nördlich bis zum Bergrücken von Ekron und neigt sich nach Sikron und geht über den Berg Baala und gelangt nach Jabneel, sodass das Meer das Ende dieser Grenze bildet. 12 Und die Westgrenze ist das große Meer und seine Küste. Das ist die Grenze der Söhne Judas, nach ihren Geschlechtern, ringsum. 13 Und Kaleb, dem Sohn des Jephunne, gab er ein Teil unter den Söhnen Judas nach dem Befehl des HERRN an Josua, nämlich die Stadt Arbas, des Vaters Enaks, das ist Hebron. 14 Und Kaleb vertrieb von dort die drei Söhne Enaks, Scheschai, Achiman und Talmai, die Enakskinder, 15 und er zog von dort hinauf zu den Einwohnern von Debir. Debir aber hieß zuvor Kirjat-Sepher. 16 Und Kaleb sprach: Wer Kirjat-Sepher schlägt und erobert, dem will ich meine Tochter Achsa zur Frau geben! 17 Da eroberte es Otniel, der Sohn des Kenas, des Bruders Kalebs; und er gab ihm seine Tochter Achsa zur Frau. 18 Und es geschah, als sie einzog,* da spornte sie ihn an, von ihrem Vater einen Acker zu erbitten. Und sie sprang vom Esel. Da sprach Kaleb zu ihr: Was willst du? 19 Sie sprach: Gib mir einen Segen! Denn du hast mir ein Südland gegeben; so gib mir auch Wasserquellen! Da gab er ihr die oberen Wasserquellen und die unteren Wasserquellen. 20 Das ist das Erbteil des Stammes der Söhne Judas nach ihren Geschlechtern. 21 Und die äußersten Städte des Stammes der Söhne Judas, gegen die Grenze der Edomiter im Süden, waren diese: Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur, 22 Kina, Dimona, Adada, 23 Kedesch, Hazor, Jitnan, 24 Siph, Telem, Bealot, 25 Hazor-Hadatta, Keriot-Hezron, welches Hazor ist, 26 Amam, Sema, Molada, 27 Hazar-Gadda, Hesmon, Beth-Pelet, 28 Hazar-Schual, Beerscheba, Bisjot-Ja, 29 Baala, Ijim, Ezem, 30 El-Tolad, Kesil, Horma, 31 Ziklag, Madmanna, Sansanna, 32 Lebaot, Silhim, Ain und Rimmon. Das sind 29 Städte und ihre Dörfer. 33 In der Schephela aber waren Estaol, Zorea, Asna, 34 Sanoach, En-Gannim, Tappuach, Enam, 35 Jarmut, Adullam, Socho, Aseka, 36 Saaraim, Aditaim, Gedera, Gederotaim; das sind 14 Städte und ihre Dörfer. 37 Zenan, Hadasa, Migdal-Gad, 38 Dilean, Mizpe, Jokteel, 39 Lachis, Bozkat, Eglon, 40 Kabbon, Lachmas, Kitlis, 41 Gederot, Beth-Dagon, Naama, Makkeda. Das sind 16 Städte und ihre Dörfer. 42 Libna, Eter, Asan, 43 Jiphtach, Asna, Nezib, 44 Kehila, Achsib, Marescha. Das sind 9 Städte und ihre Dörfer. 45 Ekron mit seinen Tochterstädten und Dörfern. 46 Von Ekron und bis an das Meer alles, was an Asdod grenzt und ihre Dörfer: 47 Asdod mit seinen Tochterstädten und Dörfern, Gaza mit seinen Tochterstädten und Dörfern, bis an den Bach Ägyptens, und das große Meer und die Küste. 48 Im Bergland aber waren Schamir, Jattir, Socho, 49 Danna, Kirjat-Sanna, das ist Debir, 50 Anab, Estemo, Anim, 51 Gosen, Holon, Gilo. Das sind 11 Städte und ihre Dörfer. 52 Arab, Duma, Esean, 53 Janum, Beth-Tappuach, Apheka, 54 Humta, Kirjat-Arba, das ist Hebron, Zior. Das sind 9 Städte und ihre Dörfer. 55 Maon, Karmel, Siph, Juta, 56 Jesreel, Jokdeam, Sanoach, 57 Kain, Gibea, Timna. Das sind 10 Städte und ihre Dörfer. 58 Halchul, Beth-Zur, Gedor, 59 Maarat, Beth-Anot und Eltekon. Das sind 6 Städte und ihre Dörfer. 60 Kirjat-Baal, das ist Kirjat-Jearim, und Rabba. Das sind 2 Städte und ihre Dörfer. 61 In der Wüste aber waren Beth-Arava, Middin, Sechacha, 62 Nibsan und Ir-Hamelach und En-Gedi. Das sind 6 Städte und ihre Dörfer. 63 Die Söhne Judas aber konnten die Jebusiter, die in Jerusalem wohnten, nicht vertreiben. So blieben die Jebusiter mit den Söhnen Judas in Jerusalem wohnen bis zu diesem Tag.
