1Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.2He came to Jesus at night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no-one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.’3Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no-one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.*’4‘How can someone be born when they are old?’ Nicodemus asked. ‘Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!’5Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, no-one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit* gives birth to spirit.7You should not be surprised at my saying, “You* must be born again.”8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.’*9‘How can this be?’ Nicodemus asked.10‘You are Israel’s teacher,’ said Jesus, ‘and do you not understand these things?11Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.12I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?13No-one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven – the Son of Man.*14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,*15that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.’*16For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.19This is the verdict: light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John testifies again about Jesus
22After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptised.23Now John also was baptising at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptised.24(This was before John was put in prison.)25An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.26They came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan – the one you testified about – look, he is baptising, and everyone is going to him.’27To this John replied, ‘A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.28You yourselves can testify that I said, “I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.”29The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.30He must become greater; I must become less.’*31The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all.32He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no-one accepts his testimony.33Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful.34For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God* gives the Spirit without limit.35The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

1Es war aber ein Mensch unter den Pharisäern namens Nikodemus, ein Oberster der Juden.2Der kam bei Nacht zu Jesus und sprach zu ihm: Rabbi, wir wissen, dass du ein Lehrer bist, der von Gott gekommen ist; denn niemand kann diese Zeichen tun, die du tust, es sei denn, dass Gott mit ihm ist.3Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Wenn jemand nicht von Neuem geboren wird, so kann er das Reich Gottes nicht sehen!4Nikodemus spricht zu ihm: Wie kann ein Mensch geboren werden, wenn er alt ist? Er kann doch nicht zum zweiten Mal in den Schoß seiner Mutter eingehen und geboren werden?5Jesus antwortete: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Wenn jemand nicht aus Wasser und Geist geboren wird, so kann er nicht in das Reich Gottes eingehen!6Was aus dem Fleisch geboren ist, das ist Fleisch, und was aus dem Geist geboren ist, das ist Geist.7Wundere dich nicht, dass ich dir gesagt habe: Ihr müsst von Neuem geboren werden!8Der Wind weht, wo er will, und du hörst sein Sausen; aber du weißt nicht, woher er kommt und wohin er geht. So ist jeder, der aus dem Geist geboren ist.9Nikodemus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Wie kann das geschehen?10Jesus erwiderte und sprach zu ihm: Du bist der Lehrer Israels und verstehst das nicht?11Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Wir reden, was wir wissen, und wir bezeugen, was wir gesehen haben; und doch nehmt ihr unser Zeugnis nicht an.12Glaubt ihr nicht, wenn ich euch von irdischen Dingen sage, wie werdet ihr glauben, wenn ich euch von den himmlischen Dingen sagen werde?13Und niemand ist hinaufgestiegen in den Himmel, außer dem, der aus dem Himmel herabgestiegen ist, dem Sohn des Menschen, der im Himmel ist.
Der Sohn Gottes ist als Retter in die Welt gekommen
14Und wie Mose in der Wüste die Schlange erhöhte, so muss der Sohn des Menschen erhöht werden,15damit jeder, der an ihn glaubt, nicht verlorengeht, sondern ewiges Leben hat.16Denn so [sehr]* hat Gott die Welt geliebt, dass er seinen eingeborenen Sohn gab, damit jeder, der an ihn glaubt, nicht verlorengeht, sondern ewiges Leben hat.17Denn Gott hat seinen Sohn nicht in die Welt gesandt, damit er die Welt richte, sondern damit die Welt durch ihn gerettet werde.18Wer an ihn glaubt, wird nicht gerichtet; wer aber nicht glaubt, der ist schon gerichtet, weil er nicht an den Namen des eingeborenen Sohnes Gottes geglaubt hat.19Darin aber besteht das Gericht, dass das Licht in die Welt gekommen ist, und die Menschen liebten die Finsternis mehr als das Licht; denn ihre Werke waren böse.20Denn jeder, der Böses tut, hasst das Licht und kommt nicht zum Licht, damit seine Werke nicht aufgedeckt werden.21Wer aber die Wahrheit tut, der kommt zum Licht, damit seine Werke offenbar werden, dass sie in Gott getan sind.
Johannes der Täufer und sein Zeugnis von Christus
22Danach kam Jesus mit seinen Jüngern in das Land Judäa, und dort hielt er sich mit ihnen auf und taufte.23Aber auch Johannes taufte in Änon, nahe bei Salim, weil viel Wasser dort war; und sie kamen dorthin und ließen sich taufen.24Denn Johannes war noch nicht ins Gefängnis geworfen worden.25Es erhob sich nun eine Streitfrage zwischen den Jüngern des Johannes und einigen Juden wegen der Reinigung.26Und sie kamen zu Johannes und sprachen zu ihm: Rabbi, der, welcher bei dir war jenseits des Jordan, für den du Zeugnis abgelegt hast, siehe, der tauft, und jedermann kommt zu ihm!27Johannes antwortete und sprach: Ein Mensch kann sich nichts nehmen, es sei denn, es ist ihm vom Himmel gegeben.28Ihr selbst bezeugt mir, dass ich gesagt habe: Nicht ich bin der Christus, sondern ich bin vor ihm her gesandt.29Wer die Braut hat, der ist der Bräutigam; der Freund des Bräutigams aber, der dasteht und ihn hört, ist hocherfreut über die Stimme des Bräutigams. Diese meine Freude ist nun erfüllt.30Er muss wachsen, ich aber muss abnehmen.*31Der von oben kommt, ist über allen. Wer von der Erde ist, der ist von der Erde und redet von der Erde; der aus dem Himmel kommt, ist über allen.32Und er bezeugt, was er gesehen und gehört hat, und sein Zeugnis nimmt niemand an.33Wer aber sein Zeugnis annimmt, der bestätigt, dass Gott wahrhaftig ist.34Denn der, den Gott gesandt hat, redet die Worte Gottes; denn Gott gibt den Geist nicht nach Maß.35Der Vater liebt den Sohn und hat alles in seine Hand gegeben.36Wer an den Sohn glaubt, der hat ewiges Leben; wer aber dem Sohn nicht glaubt, der wird das Leben nicht sehen, sondern der Zorn Gottes bleibt auf ihm.
