1The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon.2When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, ‘The Lord your God decreed this disaster for this place.3And now the Lord has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned against the Lord and did not obey him.4But today I am freeing you from the chains on your wrists. Come with me to Babylon, if you like, and I will look after you; but if you do not want to, then don’t come. Look, the whole country lies before you; go wherever you please.’5However, before Jeremiah turned to go,* Nebuzaradan added, ‘Go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the towns of Judah, and live with him among the people, or go anywhere else you please.’ Then the commander gave him provisions and a present and let him go.6So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.
Gedaliah assassinated
7When all the army officers and their men who were still in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor over the land and had put him in charge of the men, women and children who were the poorest in the land and who had not been carried into exile to Babylon,8they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah – Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah* the son of the Maakathite, and their men.9Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. ‘Do not be afraid to serve the Babylonians,*’ he said. ‘Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.10I myself will stay in Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine, summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars, and live in the towns you have taken over.’11When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom and all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them,12they all came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, from all the countries where they had been scattered. And they harvested an abundance of wine and summer fruit.13Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers still in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah14and said to him, ‘Don’t you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?’ But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.15Then Johanan son of Kareah said privately to Gedaliah in Mizpah, ‘Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no-one will know it. Why should he take your life and cause all the Jews who are gathered around you to be scattered and the remnant of Judah to perish?’16But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, ‘Don’t do such a thing! What you are saying about Ishmael is not true.’

1Dies ist das Wort, welches vom HERRN an Jeremia erging, nachdem ihn Nebusaradan, der Oberste der Leibwache, in Rama freigelassen hatte; denn als er ihn holen ließ, war er noch mit Fesseln gebunden unter all den Gefangenen Jerusalems und Judas, die nach Babel weggeführt werden sollten.2Und der Oberste der Leibwache ließ Jeremia holen und sprach zu ihm: Der HERR, dein Gott, hat dieses Unheil über diesen Ort vorhergesagt;3und der HERR hat es so kommen lassen und gehandelt, wie er gesagt hatte; denn ihr habt gegen den HERRN gesündigt und auf seine Stimme nicht gehört; darum ist es euch so ergangen!4Und nun siehe, ich löse dich heute von den Ketten, die an deinen Händen sind; gefällt es dir, mit mir nach Babel zu ziehen, so komm! Ich will Sorge für dich tragen. Gefällt es dir aber nicht, mit mir nach Babel zu ziehen, so lass es bleiben! Siehe, das ganze Land steht dir offen; wohin es dir gut und recht erscheint zu gehen, dahin geh!5Da er sich aber noch nicht entschließen konnte, [sprach Nebusaradan]: So kehre zurück zu Gedalja, dem Sohn Achikams, des Sohnes Schaphans, den der König von Babel über die Städte Judas gesetzt hat, und bleibe bei ihm unter dem Volk, oder gehe, wohin es dir gefällt! Und der Oberste der Leibwache gab ihm Wegzehrung und ein Geschenk und entließ ihn.6Da kam Jeremia zu Gedalja, dem Sohn Achikams, nach Mizpa und wohnte bei ihm unter dem Volk, das im Land übrig geblieben war.

7Als nun alle Heerführer, die sich mit ihren Männern noch im Landesinneren aufhielten, hörten, dass der König von Babel Gedalja, den Sohn Achikams, über das Land gesetzt und ihm die Männer, Frauen und Kinder übergeben hatte, auch solche von den Geringen des Landes, die nicht nach Babel weggeführt worden waren,8da kamen sie zu Gedalja nach Mizpa, nämlich Ismael, der Sohn Netanjas, Johanan und Jonathan, die Söhne Kareachs, Seraja, der Sohn Tanchumets, und die Söhne Ephais, des Netophatiters, Jesanja, der Sohn des Maachatiters, sie und ihre Leute.9Und Gedalja, der Sohn Achikams, des Sohnes Schaphans, schwor ihnen und ihren Leuten und sprach: Fürchtet euch nicht davor, den Chaldäern zu dienen; bleibt im Land und dient dem König von Babel, so wird es euch wohlergehen!10Siehe, ich wohne in Mizpa, um den Chaldäern zu Befehl zu stehen, die zu uns kommen werden. So erntet nun Wein, Obst und Öl und tut es in eure Gefäße und wohnt in euren Städten, die ihr in Besitz genommen habt!11Als auch alle Juden, die in Moab und unter den Ammonitern, in Edom und allen Ländern wohnten, hörten, dass der König von Babel einen Überrest in Juda gelassen und Gedalja, den Sohn Achikams, des Sohnes Schaphans, über sie gesetzt hatte,12da kehrten alle diese Juden wieder zurück von den Orten, wohin sie vertrieben worden waren; und sie kamen in das Land Juda zu Gedalja nach Mizpa; und sie ernteten Wein und Obst in sehr großer Menge.13Johanan aber, der Sohn Kareachs, und alle Heerführer, die sich im Landesinneren aufhielten, kamen zu Gedalja nach Mizpa,14und sie sprachen zu ihm: Weißt du auch, dass Baalis, der König der Ammoniter, Ismael, den Sohn Netanjas, gesandt hat, um dich zu ermorden? Aber Gedalja, der Sohn Achikams, glaubte ihnen nicht.15Da redete Johanan, der Sohn Kareachs, heimlich mit Gedalja in Mizpa und sprach: Lass mich doch hingehen; ich will Ismael, den Sohn Netanjas, erschlagen, ohne dass es jemand erfährt! Warum sollte er dich ermorden, sodass alle Juden, die sich zu dir versammelt haben, zerstreut werden und der Überrest von Juda umkommt?16Da sprach Gedalja, der Sohn Achikams, zu Johanan, dem Sohn Kareachs: Du sollst diesen Anschlag nicht ausführen; denn du redest Lügen über Ismael!
