See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.11He tends his flock like a shepherd: he gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.12Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?13Who can fathom the Spirit* of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as his counsellor?14Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding?15Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.16Lebanon is not sufficient for altar fires, nor its animals enough for burnt offerings.17Before him all the nations are as nothing; they are regarded by him as worthless and less than nothing.18With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken him?19As for an idol, a metalworker casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it.20A person too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot; they look for a skilled worker to set up an idol that will not topple.21Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?22He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.23He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.24No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.25‘To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?’ says the Holy One.26Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.27Why do you complain, Jacob? Why do you say, Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God’?28Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no-one can fathom.29He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.30Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;31but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

1Tröstet, tröstet mein Volk!, spricht euer Gott.2Redet zum Herzen Jerusalems und ruft ihr zu, dass ihr Frondienst vollendet, dass ihre Schuld abgetragen ist; denn sie hat von der Hand des HERRN Zweifaches empfangen für alle ihre Sünden.3Die Stimme eines Rufenden [ertönt]: In der Wüste bereitet den Weg des HERRN, ebnet in der Steppe eine Straße unserem Gott!4Jedes Tal soll erhöht und jeder Berg und Hügel erniedrigt werden; was uneben ist, soll gerade werden, und was hügelig ist, zur Ebene!5Und die Herrlichkeit des HERRN wird sich offenbaren, und alles Fleisch miteinander wird sie sehen; denn der Mund des HERRN hat es geredet.6Es spricht eine Stimme: Verkündige! 12Wer hat die Wasser mit der hohlen Hand gemessen? Wer hat den Himmel mit der Spanne abgegrenzt und den Staub der Erde in ein Maß gefasst? Wer hat die Berge mit der Waage gewogen und die Hügel mit Waagschalen?13Wer hat den Geist des HERRN ergründet, und wer hat ihn als Ratgeber unterwiesen?14Wen hat Er um Rat gefragt, dass der Ihn verständig machte und Ihm den Weg des Rechts wiese, dass er Ihn Erkenntnis lehrte und Ihm den Weg der Einsicht zeigte?15Siehe, die Völker sind wie ein Tropfen am Eimer; wie ein Stäubchen in den Waagschalen sind sie geachtet; siehe, er hebt die Inseln auf wie ein Staubkörnchen!16Der Libanon reicht nicht hin zum Brennholz, und sein Wild genügt nicht zum Brandopfer.17Alle Völker sind wie nichts vor ihm; sie gelten ihm weniger als nichts, ja, als Nichtigkeit gelten sie ihm!18Wem wollt ihr denn Gott vergleichen? Oder was für ein Ebenbild wollt ihr ihm an die Seite stellen?19Das Götzenbild? Das hat der Künstler gegossen, und der Goldschmied überzieht es mit Gold und lötet silberne Kettchen daran.20Wer aber zu arm ist, wählt als Weihegeschenk ein Holz, das nicht fault, und sucht sich einen Schnitzer, der ein Götzenbild herstellen kann, das nicht wackelt. —21Wisst ihr es nicht? Hört ihr es nicht? Ist es euch nicht von Anfang an verkündigt worden? Habt ihr nicht Einsicht erlangt in die Grundlegung der Erde?22Er ist es, der über dem Kreis der Erde thront und vor dem ihre Bewohner wie Heuschrecken sind; der den Himmel ausbreitet wie einen Schleier und ihn ausspannt wie ein Zelt zum Wohnen;23der die Fürsten zunichtemacht, die Richter der Erde in Nichtigkeit verwandelt —24kaum sind sie gepflanzt, kaum sind sie gesät, kaum hat ihr Stamm in der Erde Wurzeln getrieben, da haucht er sie an, und sie verdorren, und ein Sturmwind trägt sie wie Stoppeln hinweg.25Mit wem wollt ihr mich denn vergleichen, dem ich gleich sein soll?, spricht der Heilige.26Hebt eure Augen auf zur Höhe und seht: Wer hat diese erschaffen? Er, der ihr Heer abgezählt herausführt, er ruft sie alle mit Namen. So groß ist seine Macht und so stark ist er, dass nicht eines vermisst wird.27Warum sprichst du denn, Jakob, und sagst du, Israel: Mein Weg ist verborgen vor dem HERRN, und mein Recht entgeht meinem Gott?28Weißt du es denn nicht, hast du es denn nicht gehört? Der ewige Gott, der HERR, der die Enden der Erde geschaffen hat, wird nicht müde noch matt; sein Verstand ist unerschöpflich!29Er gibt dem Müden Kraft und Stärke genug dem Unvermögenden.30Knaben werden müde und matt, und junge Männer straucheln und fallen;31aber die auf den HERRN harren, kriegen neue Kraft, dass sie auffahren mit Flügeln wie Adler, dass sie laufen und nicht matt werden, dass sie wandeln und nicht müde werden.
