A prophecy against Tyre

1 A prophecy against Tyre: Wail, you ships of Tarshish! For Tyre is destroyed and left without house or harbour. From the land of Cyprus word has come to them. 2 Be silent, you people of the island and you merchants of Sidon, whom the seafarers have enriched. 3 On the great waters came the grain of the Shihor; the harvest of the Nile* was the revenue of Tyre, and she became the market-place of the nations. 4 Be ashamed, Sidon, and you fortress of the sea, for the sea has spoken: ‘I have neither been in labour nor given birth; I have neither reared sons nor brought up daughters.’ 5 When word comes to Egypt, they will be in anguish at the report from Tyre. 6 Cross over to Tarshish; wail, you people of the island. 7 Is this your city of revelry, the old, old city, whose feet have taken her to settle in far-off lands? 8 Who planned this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose merchants are princes, whose traders are renowned in the earth? 9 The Lord Almighty planned it, to bring down her pride in all her splendour and to humble all who are renowned on the earth. 10 Till* your land as they do along the Nile, Daughter Tarshish, for you no longer have a harbour. 11 The Lord has stretched out his hand over the sea and made its kingdoms tremble. He has given an order concerning Phoenicia that her fortresses be destroyed. 12 He said, ‘No more of your revelling, Virgin Daughter Sidon, now crushed! ‘Up, cross over to Cyprus; even there you will find no rest.’ 13 Look at the land of the Babylonians,* this people that is now of no account! The Assyrians have made it a place for desert creatures; they raised up their siege towers, they stripped its fortresses bare and turned it into a ruin. 14 Wail, you ships of Tarshish; your fortress is destroyed! 15 At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, the span of a king’s life. But at the end of these seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute: 16 ‘Take up a harp, walk through the city, you forgotten prostitute; play the harp well, sing many a song, so that you will be remembered.’ 17 At the end of seventy years, the Lord will deal with Tyre. She will return to her lucrative prostitution and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. 18 Yet her profit and her earnings will be set apart for the Lord; they will not be stored up or hoarded. Her profits will go to those who live before the Lord, for abundant food and fine clothes.

1 Die Last über Tyrus: Jammert, ihr Tarsisschiffe! Denn [Tyrus] ist zerstört, ohne Häuser und ohne Einfahrt [für Schiffe]. Aus dem Land der Kittäer* ist es ihnen bekannt geworden. 2 Schweigt, ihr Bewohner der Küste! Die zidonischen Kaufleute, die das Meer befahren, haben dich erfüllt, 3 und auf großen Wassern war die Saat des Sihor, die Ernte des Niltales, ihr Einkommen, und sie war der Markt der Nationen. 4 Schäme dich, Zidon; denn das Meer, die Meeresfeste spricht: »Ich habe keine Wehen gehabt, noch geboren, noch junge Männer großgezogen, noch Jungfrauen auferzogen!« 5 Wie bei der Nachricht über Ägypten, so werden sie sich auch [vor Schrecken] winden bei der Nachricht über Tyrus. 6 Fahrt hinüber nach Tarsis*, jammert, ihr Bewohner der Küste! 7 Ist das nicht eure freudenreiche Stadt, deren Ursprung in uralter Vorzeit liegt, deren Füße sie in ferne [Länder] trugen, damit sie sich dort ansiedelten? 8 Wer hat dieses über Tyrus beschlossen, die Kronenspenderin, deren Kaufleute Fürsten und deren Händler die Vornehmen der Erde waren? 9 Der HERR der Heerscharen hat es beschlossen, um den Stolz all ihrer Pracht zu entweihen und alle Vornehmen der Erde verächtlich zu machen. 10 Überflute dein Land, wie es beim Nil geschieht, du Tochter Tarsis*; es ist keine Werft mehr da! 11 Er hat seine Hand über das Meer ausgestreckt, er hat Königreiche erschüttert; der HERR hat über Kanaan Befehl gegeben, dass seine Festungen zerstört werden sollen. 12 Und er hat gesagt: Du sollst dich künftig nicht mehr freuen, du geschändete Jungfrau, Tochter Zidon! Nach Kittim mache dich auf, fahre hinüber! Auch dort wird man dir keine Ruhe lassen! 13 Siehe, das Land der Chaldäer, dieses Volk, das nicht war — Assyrien hat es den Wüstenbewohnern zugewiesen —, sie haben ihre Belagerungstürme errichtet, seine Paläste bloßgelegt, es zu Trümmerhaufen gemacht. 14 Jammert, ihr Tarsisschiffe, denn eure Zuflucht ist zerstört! 15 Und es wird geschehen an jenem Tag, da wird Tyrus für 70 Jahre in Vergessenheit geraten, solange ein König regieren kann. Am Ende von 70 Jahren aber wird es Tyrus ergehen, wie es in dem Lied von der Hure heißt: 16 »Nimm die Laute, ziehe in der Stadt herum, du vergessene Hure! Spiele gut, singe Lied auf Lied, dass man wieder an dich denkt!« 17 Denn es wird geschehen am Ende der 70 Jahre, da wird der HERR Tyrus heimsuchen, und sie wird wieder zu ihrem Hurenlohn kommen und wird mit allen Königreichen der Erde, die auf der Erde [ansässig] sind, Hurerei treiben. 18 Aber ihr Erwerb und Hurenlohn wird dem HERRN geweiht werden; er wird nicht angesammelt noch aufgespeichert, sondern ihr Erwerb wird für die sein, die vor dem Angesicht des HERRN wohnen, damit sie essen bis zur Sättigung und stattlich bekleidet sind.
