1Afterwards Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.” ’2Pharaoh said, ‘Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.’3Then they said, ‘The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.’4But the king of Egypt said, ‘Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labour? Get back to your work!’5Then Pharaoh said, ‘Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.’6That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people:7‘You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw.8But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, “Let us go and sacrifice to our God.”9Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.’10Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, ‘This is what Pharaoh says: “I will not give you any more straw.11Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.” ’12So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw.13The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, ‘Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.’14And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, ‘Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?’15Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: ‘Why have you treated your servants this way?16Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, “Make bricks!” Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.’17Pharaoh said, ‘Lazy, that’s what you are – lazy! That is why you keep saying, “Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.”18Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.’19The Israelite overseers realised they were in trouble when they were told, ‘You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.’20When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them,21and they said, ‘May the Lord look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.’
God promises deliverance
22Moses returned to the Lord and said, ‘Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me?23Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.’

Mose und Aaron vor dem Pharao
1Danach gingen Mose und Aaron hinein und sagten zu dem Pharao: So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Lass mein Volk ziehen, damit es mir in der Wüste ein Fest hält!2Der Pharao antwortete: Wer ist der HERR, dass ich auf seine Stimme hören sollte, um Israel ziehen zu lassen? Ich kenne den HERRN nicht, und ich will Israel auch nicht ziehen lassen!3Und sie sprachen: Der Gott der Hebräer ist uns begegnet; wir wollen drei Tagereisen weit in die Wüste ziehen und dem HERRN, unserem Gott, Opfer darbringen, damit er uns nicht mit der Pest oder mit dem Schwert schlägt!4Da sprach der König von Ägypten zu ihnen: Mose und Aaron, warum zieht ihr das Volk von ihren Pflichten ab? Geht hin an eure Lasten!5Weiter sprach der Pharao: Siehe, es ist schon zu viel Volk im Land; und ihr wollt sie noch von ihren Lasten [ausruhen und] feiern lassen?6Und der Pharao gab an demselben Tag den Treibern des Volkes und seinen Aufsehern Befehl und sprach:7Ihr sollt dem Volk kein Stroh mehr geben zum Ziegelstreichen wie gestern und vorgestern. Lasst sie selbst hingehen und sich Stroh zusammensuchen!8Ihr sollt ihnen aber dennoch die bestimmte Zahl Ziegel auferlegen, die sie gestern und vorgestern gemacht haben, und davon nichts nachlassen; denn sie sind faul. Darum schreien sie und sprechen: Wir wollen hingehen und unserem Gott Opfer darbringen!9Schwer soll die Arbeit auf den Leuten lasten, sodass sie damit zu schaffen haben und nicht auf trügerische Worte achten!10Da gingen die Treiber des Volkes und seine Aufseher hinaus, redeten mit dem Volk und sprachen: So spricht der Pharao: »Ich gebe euch kein Stroh mehr;11geht ihr selbst hin, holt euch Stroh, wo ihr es findet, aber von eurem Tagewerk wird euch nichts erlassen!«12Da zerstreute sich das Volk im ganzen Land Ägypten, um Stoppeln zu sammeln, damit sie gehacktes Stroh hätten.13Und die Treiber trieben sie an und sprachen: Erfüllt euer bestimmtes Tagewerk, wie [zuvor], als ihr noch Stroh hattet!14Und die Aufseher der Kinder Israels, welche die Treiber des Pharao über sie gesetzt hatten, wurden geschlagen, und es wurde zu ihnen gesagt: Warum habt ihr weder heute noch gestern euer Maß an Ziegeln erfüllt wie zuvor?15Da gingen die Aufseher der Kinder Israels hinein und schrien zu dem Pharao und sprachen: Warum behandelst du deine Knechte so?16Man gibt deinen Knechten kein Stroh und spricht zu uns: Macht die Ziegel! Und siehe, deine Knechte werden geschlagen; dein Volk versündigt sich!17Er aber sprach: Ihr seid faul, faul seid ihr! Darum sprecht ihr: Wir wollen hingehen und dem HERRN Opfer darbringen!18So geht nun hin, arbeitet; Stroh soll man euch nicht geben, aber die bestimmte Anzahl Ziegel sollt ihr liefern!19Da sahen die Aufseher der Kinder Israels, dass es mit ihnen schlimm stand, weil man sagte: Ihr sollt nichts nachlassen von der Zahl der Ziegel, die ihr täglich zu liefern habt!20Und als sie von dem Pharao hinausgingen, trafen sie Mose und Aaron an, die dort standen und auf sie warteten.21Da sprachen sie zu ihnen: Der HERR sehe auf euch und richte es, dass ihr uns verhasst gemacht habt vor dem Pharao und seinen Knechten und ihnen das Schwert in die Hand gegeben habt, um uns zu töten!22Da wandte sich Mose an den HERRN und sprach: Herr, warum lässt du dein Volk so schlecht behandeln? Warum hast du mich hergesandt?23Denn seitdem ich hineingegangen bin zum Pharao, um in deinem Namen zu reden, hat er dieses Volk schlecht behandelt, und du hast dein Volk gar nicht errettet!
