Absalom’s conspiracy

1 In the course of time, Absalom provided himself with a chariot and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him. 2 He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, ‘What town are you from?’ He would answer, ‘Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.’ 3 Then Absalom would say to him, ‘Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you.’ 4 And Absalom would add, ‘If only I were appointed judge in the land! Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that they receive justice.’ 5 Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. 6 Absalom behaved in this way towards all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel. 7 At the end of four* years, Absalom said to the king, ‘Let me go to Hebron and fulfil a vow I made to the Lord. 8 While your servant was living at Geshur in Aram, I made this vow: “If the Lord takes me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the Lord in Hebron.*” ’ 9 The king said to him, ‘Go in peace.’ So he went to Hebron. 10 Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, ‘As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets, then say, “Absalom is king in Hebron.” ’ 11 Two hundred men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter. 12 While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor, to come from Giloh, his home town. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.

13 A messenger came and told David, ‘The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom.’ 14 Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, ‘Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom. We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin on us and put the city to the sword.’ 15 The king’s officials answered him, ‘Your servants are ready to do whatever our lord the king chooses.’ 16 The king set out, with his entire household following him; but he left ten concubines to take care of the palace. 17 So the king set out, with all the people following him, and they halted at the edge of the city. 18 All his men marched past him, along with all the Kerethites and Pelethites; and all the six hundred Gittites who had accompanied him from Gath marched before the king. 19 The king said to Ittai the Gittite, ‘Why should you come along with us? Go back and stay with King Absalom. You are a foreigner, an exile from your homeland. 20 You came only yesterday. And today shall I make you wander about with us, when I do not know where I am going? Go back, and take your people with you. May the Lord show you kindness and faithfulness.’* 21 But Ittai replied to the king, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be.’ 22 David said to Ittai, ‘Go ahead, march on.’ So Ittai the Gittite marched on with all his men and the families that were with him. 23 The whole countryside wept aloud as all the people passed by. The king also crossed the Kidron Valley, and all the people moved on towards the wilderness. 24 Zadok was there, too, and all the Levites who were with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. They set down the ark of God, and Abiathar offered sacrifices until all the people had finished leaving the city. 25 Then the king said to Zadok, ‘Take the ark of God back into the city. If I find favour in the Lord’s eyes, he will bring me back and let me see it and his dwelling-place again. 26 But if he says, “I am not pleased with you,” then I am ready; let him do to me whatever seems good to him.’ 27 The king also said to Zadok the priest, ‘Do you understand? Go back to the city with my blessing. Take your son Ahimaaz with you, and also Abiathar’s son Jonathan. You and Abiathar return with your two sons. 28 I will wait at the fords in the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.’ 29 So Zadok and Abiathar took the ark of God back to Jerusalem and stayed there. 30 But David continued up the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went; his head was covered and he was barefoot. All the people with him covered their heads too and were weeping as they went up. 31 Now David had been told, ‘Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.’ So David prayed, ‘Lord, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.’ 32 When David arrived at the summit, where people used to worship God, Hushai the Arkite was there to meet him, his robe torn and dust on his head. 33 David said to him, ‘If you go with me, you will be a burden to me. 34 But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, “Your Majesty, I will be your servant; I was your father’s servant in the past, but now I will be your servant,” then you can help me by frustrating Ahithophel’s advice. 35 Won’t the priests Zadok and Abiathar be there with you? Tell them anything you hear in the king’s palace. 36 Their two sons, Ahimaaz son of Zadok and Jonathan son of Abiathar, are there with them. Send them to me with anything you hear.’ 37 So Hushai, David’s confidant, arrived at Jerusalem as Absalom was entering the city.

1 Danach aber geschah es, dass Absalom sich Wagen und Pferde verschaffte und 50 Mann, die vor ihm herliefen. 2 Und Absalom machte sich am Morgen früh auf und stellte sich neben dem Torweg auf; und es geschah, wenn jemand einen Rechtsstreit hatte, sodass er zum König vor Gericht kommen musste, so rief ihn Absalom zu sich und fragte ihn: »Aus welcher Stadt bist du?« Antwortete er dann: »Dein Knecht ist aus einem der Stämme Israels«, 3 so sprach Absalom zu ihm: »Siehe, deine Sache ist gut und recht, aber beim König ist niemand, der dir Gehör schenkt!« 4 Und Absalom sprach: O dass man doch mich zum Richter im Land einsetzte, damit jedermann zu mir käme, der einen Rechtsstreit und Rechtshandel hat; ich würde ihm zu seinem Recht verhelfen! 5 Und es geschah, wenn jemand kam, um sich vor ihm niederzuwerfen, so streckte er seine Hand aus, ergriff ihn und küsste ihn. 6 So machte es Absalom mit allen Israeliten, die zum König vor Gericht kamen; und so stahl sich Absalom die Herzen der Männer von Israel. 7 Und es geschah am Ende von 40 Jahren, da sprach Absalom zu dem König: Ich möchte doch hingehen nach Hebron und mein Gelübde erfüllen, das ich dem HERRN gelobt habe. 8 Dein Knecht hat nämlich ein Gelübde getan, als ich in Geschur in Aram wohnte, das lautete so: Wenn mich der HERR wirklich wieder nach Jerusalem zurückbringt, so will ich dem HERRN dienen! 9 Und der König sprach zu ihm: Geh hin in Frieden! Da machte er sich auf und ging nach Hebron. 10 Und Absalom sandte geheime Boten zu allen Stämmen Israels und ließ sagen: Wenn ihr den Schall des Schopharhornes hört, so sprecht: Absalom ist König geworden in Hebron! 11 Mit Absalom aber gingen 200 Männer aus Jerusalem, die eingeladen waren und arglos hingingen, ohne von irgendetwas zu wissen. 12 Absalom sandte auch nach Ahitophel, dem Giloniter, dem Ratgeber Davids, und ließ ihn aus seiner Stadt Gilo holen, während er die Opfer schlachtete. Und die Verschwörung wurde stark, und das Volk nahm ständig zu bei Absalom.

13 Da kam ein Bote und meldete es David und sprach: Das Herz der Männer von Israel hat sich Absalom zugewandt! 14 Da sprach David zu allen seinen Knechten, die bei ihm in Jerusalem waren: Auf, lasst uns fliehen; denn sonst gibt es für uns kein Entkommen vor Absalom! Macht euch rasch auf den Weg, damit er uns nicht plötzlich einholt und Unglück über uns bringt und die Stadt mit der Schärfe des Schwertes schlägt! 15 Da sprachen die Knechte des Königs zum König: Ganz wie unser Herr, der König, will; siehe, hier sind deine Knechte! 16 Und der König zog aus und sein ganzes Haus in seinem Gefolge; doch ließ der König zehn Nebenfrauen zurück, die das Haus hüten sollten. 17 Und der König zog hinaus und alles Volk in seinem Gefolge, und sie stellten sich beim äußersten Haus auf. 18 Und alle Knechte zogen an ihm vorüber, dazu alle Kreter und Pleter; auch alle Gatiter, 600 Mann, die ihm von Gat gefolgt waren, zogen an dem König vorüber. 19 Aber der König sprach zu Ittai, dem Gatiter: Warum willst auch du mit uns ziehen? Kehre um und bleibe bei dem König! Denn du bist ein Fremdling und sogar aus deinem Heimatort verbannt. 20 Gestern bist du gekommen, und heute sollte ich dich schon mit uns umherirren lassen, da ich hingehen muss, wohin ich kann? Kehre um und führe deine Brüder zurück; dir widerfahre Barmherzigkeit und Treue! 21 Ittai aber antwortete dem König und sprach: So wahr der HERR lebt und so wahr mein Herr, der König, lebt: An dem Ort, an welchem mein Herr und König sein wird — es gehe zum Tod oder zum Leben —, dort soll auch dein Diener sein! 22 Da sprach David zu Ittai: So komm und zieh vorüber! So zog Ittai, der Gatiter, vorüber und alle seine Männer und sein ganzer Tross* mit ihm. 23 Und das ganze Land weinte mit lauter Stimme, während alles Volk vorüberzog. Danach überschritt auch der König den Bach Kidron, und das ganze Volk schlug den Weg ein, der zur Wüste führt. 24 Und siehe, auch Zadok [war bei ihnen], und alle Leviten mit ihm trugen die Bundeslade Gottes; und sie stellten die Lade Gottes hin; Abjatar aber stieg hinauf, bis das ganze Volk aus der Stadt vollends vorübergezogen war. 25 Aber der König sprach zu Zadok: Bringe die Lade Gottes wieder in die Stadt zurück! Wenn ich Gnade vor dem HERRN finde, so wird er mich zurückbringen, dass ich ihn und seine Wohnung wiedersehen darf; 26 wenn er aber spricht: Ich habe keinen Gefallen an dir! — [siehe,] hier bin ich; er verfahre mit mir, wie es ihm gefällt! 27 Und der König sprach zu dem Priester Zadok: Bist du nicht der Seher? Kehre in Frieden wieder in die Stadt zurück und mit dir dein Sohn Achimaaz und Jonathan, der Sohn Abjatars, eure beiden Söhne, mit euch! 28 Siehe, ich will in den Ebenen der Wüste warten, bis Botschaft von euch kommt, um mich zu benachrichtigen. 29 So brachten Zadok und Abjatar die Lade Gottes wieder nach Jerusalem zurück und blieben dort. 30 David aber stieg den Ölberg hinauf und weinte, während er hinaufging; er ging aber mit verhülltem Haupt und barfuß; auch von dem ganzen Volk, das bei ihm war, hatte jeder das Haupt verhüllt und ging unter Weinen hinauf. 31 Als man aber David berichtete, dass auch Ahitophel mit Absalom verschworen war, sprach David: HERR, mache doch den Rat Ahitophels zur Torheit! 32 Und es geschah, als David auf die Höhe kam, wo man Gott anzubeten pflegte, siehe, da begegnete ihm Husai, der Architer, mit zerrissenen Kleidern und Erde auf seinem Haupt. 33 Und David sprach zu ihm: Wenn du mit mir hinübergehst, wirst du mir eine Last sein; 34 wenn du aber in die Stadt zurückkehrst und zu Absalom sprichst: »Ich will dein Knecht sein, o König; wie ich bisher der Knecht deines Vaters war, so will ich nun dein Knecht sein« — so kannst du mir den Rat Ahitophels zunichtemachen! 35 Sind nicht die Priester Zadok und Abjatar dort bei dir? So teile nun alles, was du aus dem Haus des Königs erfährst, den Priestern Zadok und Abjatar mit! 36 Siehe, ihre beiden Söhne sind dort bei ihnen: Achimaaz, [der Sohn] Zadoks, und Jonathan, [der Sohn] Abjatars; durch sie könnt ihr mir alles weitergeben, was ihr erfahrt! 37 So begab sich denn Davids Freund Husai in die Stadt; Absalom aber zog in Jerusalem ein.
