1This will be my third visit to you. ‘Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’2I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: on my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others,3since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you.4For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God’s power. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him in our dealing with you.5Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realise that Christ Jesus is in you – unless, of course, you fail the test?6And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test.7Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong – not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.8For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.9We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.10This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority – the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.

11Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. 1Dies ist das dritte Mal, dass ich zu euch komme. »Durch zweier und dreier Zeugen Mund soll jede Sache bestätigt werden!«2Ich habe es im Voraus gesagt und sage es im Voraus; wie bei meiner zweiten Anwesenheit, so schreibe ich auch jetzt in meiner Abwesenheit denen, die zuvor gesündigt haben, und allen Übrigen, dass ich nicht schonen werde, wenn ich nochmals komme,3weil ihr ja einen Beweis verlangt, dass Christus durch mich redet, der euch gegenüber nicht schwach ist, sondern mächtig unter euch.4Denn wenn er auch aus Schwachheit gekreuzigt wurde, so lebt er doch aus der Kraft Gottes; so sind auch wir zwar schwach in ihm, doch werden wir mit ihm leben aus der Kraft Gottes für euch.5Prüft euch selbst, ob ihr im Glauben seid; stellt euch selbst auf die Probe! Oder erkennt ihr euch selbst nicht, dass Jesus Christus in euch ist? Es sei denn, dass ihr unecht wärt!6Ich hoffe aber, ihr werdet erkennen, dass wir nicht unecht sind.7Ich bete aber zu Gott, dass ihr nichts Böses tut; nicht damit wir bewährt erscheinen, sondern damit ihr das Gute tut, wir aber wie Unbewährte seien.8Denn wir vermögen nichts gegen die Wahrheit, sondern [nur] für die Wahrheit.9Wir freuen uns nämlich, wenn wir schwach sind, ihr aber stark seid; das aber wünschen wir auch, euer Zurechtkommen.10Darum schreibe ich dies abwesend, damit ich anwesend nicht Strenge gebrauchen muss gemäß der Vollmacht, die mir der Herr gegeben hat zum Erbauen und nicht zum Zerstören.11Im Übrigen, ihr Brüder, freut euch, lasst euch zurechtbringen, lasst euch ermahnen, seid eines Sinnes, haltet Frieden; so wird der Gott der Liebe und des Friedens mit euch sein!12Grüßt einander mit einem heiligen Kuss!
