Elijah flees to Horeb

1 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, ‘May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.’ 3 Elijah was afraid* and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, Lord,’ he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’ 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat.’ 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.’ 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he travelled for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

The Lord appears to Elijah

9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ 10 He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’ 11 The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ 14 He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’ 15 The Lord said to him, ‘Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. 17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. 18 Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel – all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.’

The call of Elisha

19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. ‘Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,’ he said, ‘and then I will come with you.’ ‘Go back,’ Elijah replied. ‘What have I done to you?’ 21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the ploughing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.

Elia flieht vor Isebel

1 Und Ahab erzählte der Isebel alles, was Elia getan hatte, und wie er alle Propheten mit dem Schwert umgebracht hatte. 2 Da sandte Isebel einen Boten zu Elia und ließ ihm sagen: Die Götter sollen mir dies und das tun, wenn ich morgen um diese Zeit mit deinem Leben nicht so verfahre wie du mit ihrem Leben! 3 Und als er das sah, machte er sich auf und ging fort um seines Lebens willen; und er kam nach Beerscheba, das zu Juda gehört, und ließ seinen Burschen dort zurück. 4 Er selbst aber ging hin in die Wüste, eine Tagereise weit, und er kam und setzte sich unter einen Ginsterstrauch. Und er erbat für sich den Tod und sprach: Es ist genug! So nimm nun, HERR, mein Leben, denn ich bin nicht besser als meine Väter! 5 Und er legte sich und schlief ein unter dem Ginsterstrauch. Und siehe, ein Engel rührte ihn an und sprach zu ihm: Steh auf und iss! 6 Und als er sich umsah, siehe, da war bei seinem Kopf ein auf heißen Steinen gebackener Brotfladen und ein Krug Wasser. Und als er gegessen und getrunken hatte, legte er sich wieder schlafen.

Der Herr begegnet Elia am Berg Horeb

7 Und der Engel des HERRN kam zum zweiten Mal und rührte ihn an und sprach: Steh auf und iss, denn der Weg ist [sonst] zu weit für dich! 8 Und er stand auf und aß und trank, und er ging in der Kraft dieser Speise 40 Tage und 40 Nächte lang, bis an den Berg Gottes, den Horeb. 9 Und er ging dort in eine Höhle hinein und blieb dort über Nacht. Und siehe, das Wort des HERRN kam zu ihm, und Er sprach zu ihm: Was willst du hier, Elia? 10 Er sprach: Ich habe heftig geeifert für den HERRN, den Gott der Heerscharen, denn die Kinder Israels haben deinen Bund verlassen und deine Altäre niedergerissen und deine Propheten mit dem Schwert umgebracht, und ich allein bin übrig geblieben; und sie trachten danach, mir das Leben zu nehmen! 11 Er aber sprach: Komm heraus und tritt auf den Berg vor den HERRN! Und siehe, der HERR ging vorüber; und ein großer, starker Wind, der die Berge zerriss und die Felsen zerbrach, ging vor dem HERRN her; der HERR aber war nicht in dem Wind. Und nach dem Wind kam ein Erdbeben; aber der HERR war nicht in dem Erdbeben. 12 Und nach dem Erdbeben kam ein Feuer; aber der HERR war nicht in dem Feuer. Und nach dem Feuer kam die Stimme eines sanften Säuselns. 13 Und es geschah, als Elia dieses hörte, da verhüllte er sein Angesicht mit seinem Mantel, und er ging hinaus und trat an den Eingang der Höhle. Und siehe, da kam eine Stimme zu ihm, die sprach: Was willst du hier, Elia? 14 Er sprach: Ich habe heftig geeifert für den HERRN, den Gott der Heerscharen, denn die Kinder Israels haben deinen Bund verlassen, deine Altäre niedergerissen und deine Propheten mit dem Schwert umgebracht; und ich allein bin übrig geblieben, und sie trachten danach, mir das Leben zu nehmen! 15 Aber der HERR sprach zu ihm: Kehre wieder auf deinen Weg zurück zur Wüste und wandere nach Damaskus, und geh hinein und salbe Hasael zum König über Aram! 16 Auch sollst du Jehu, den Sohn Nimsis, zum König über Israel salben; und Elisa, den Sohn Saphats, von Abel-Mechola, sollst du zum Propheten salben an deiner Stelle. 17 Und es soll geschehen, wer dem Schwert Hasaels entflieht, den soll Jehu töten; und wer dem Schwert Jehus entflieht, den soll Elisa töten. 18 Ich aber habe in Israel siebentausend übrig bleiben lassen, nämlich alle, die ihre Knie nicht gebeugt haben vor Baal und deren Mund ihn nicht geküsst hat!

Elisa wird zum Nachfolger Elias berufen

19 Und er ging von dort hinweg und fand Elisa, den Sohn Saphats; der pflügte mit zwölf Joch Rindern vor sich her, und er selbst war beim zwölften. Und Elia ging zu ihm und warf seinen Mantel über ihn. 20 Er aber verließ die Rinder und lief Elia nach und sprach: Lass mich noch meinen Vater und meine Mutter küssen, dann will ich dir nachfolgen! Er aber sprach zu ihm: Geh hin [und] kehre wieder zurück! Denn was habe ich dir getan? 21 Da wandte er sich von ihm und nahm ein Joch Rinder und opferte sie und kochte das Fleisch mit dem Geschirr der Rinder und gab es dem Volk, dass sie aßen; dann machte er sich auf und folgte Elia nach und diente ihm.
