1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

Love and hatred for fellow believers

3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, ‘I know him,’ but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God* is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister* is still in the darkness. 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister* lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.

Reasons for writing

12 I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. 14 I write to you, dear children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

On not loving the world

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father* is not in them. 16 For everything in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives for ever.

Warnings against denying the Son

18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.* 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. 22 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist – denying the Father and the Son. 23 No-one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also. 24 As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he promised us – eternal life. 26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. 27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit – just as it has taught you, remain in him.

God’s children and sin

28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.

1 Meine Kinder, dies schreibe ich euch, damit ihr nicht sündigt! Und wenn jemand sündigt, so haben wir einen Fürsprecher bei dem Vater, Jesus Christus, den Gerechten; 2 und er ist das Sühnopfer für unsere Sünden, aber nicht nur für die unseren, sondern auch für die der ganzen Welt.

Wahre Gotteserkenntnis zeigt sich im Halten der Gebote Gottes und in der Bruderliebe

3 Und daran erkennen wir, dass wir ihn erkannt haben, wenn wir seine Gebote halten. 4 Wer sagt: »Ich habe ihn erkannt«, und hält doch seine Gebote nicht, der ist ein Lügner, und in einem solchen ist die Wahrheit nicht; 5 wer aber sein Wort hält, in dem ist wahrhaftig die Liebe Gottes vollkommen geworden. Daran erkennen wir, dass wir in ihm sind. 6 Wer sagt, dass er in ihm bleibt, der ist verpflichtet, auch selbst so zu wandeln, wie jener gewandelt ist. 7 Brüder, ich schreibe euch nicht ein neues Gebot, sondern ein altes Gebot, das ihr von Anfang an hattet; das alte Gebot ist das Wort, das ihr von Anfang an gehört habt. 8 Und doch schreibe ich euch ein neues Gebot, was wahr ist in Ihm und in euch; denn die Finsternis vergeht, und das wahre Licht scheint schon. 9 Wer sagt, dass er im Licht ist, und doch seinen Bruder hasst, der ist noch immer in der Finsternis. 10 Wer seinen Bruder liebt, der bleibt im Licht, und nichts Anstößiges ist in ihm; 11 wer aber seinen Bruder hasst, der ist in der Finsternis und wandelt in der Finsternis und weiß nicht, wohin er geht, weil die Finsternis seine Augen verblendet hat. 12 Ich schreibe euch, ihr Kinder, weil euch die Sünden vergeben sind um seines Namens willen. 13 Ich schreibe euch, ihr Väter, weil ihr den erkannt habt, der von Anfang an ist. Ich schreibe euch, ihr jungen Männer, weil ihr den Bösen überwunden habt. Ich schreibe euch, ihr Kinder, weil ihr den Vater erkannt habt. 14 Ich habe euch geschrieben, ihr Väter, weil ihr den erkannt habt, der von Anfang an ist. Ich habe euch geschrieben, ihr jungen Männer, weil ihr stark seid und das Wort Gottes in euch bleibt und ihr den Bösen überwunden habt.

Warnung vor der Liebe zur Welt

15 Habt nicht lieb die Welt, noch was in der Welt ist! Wenn jemand die Welt lieb hat, so ist die Liebe des Vaters nicht in ihm. 16 Denn alles, was in der Welt ist, die Fleischeslust, die Augenlust und der Hochmut des Lebens, ist nicht von dem Vater, sondern von der Welt. 17 Und die Welt vergeht und ihre Lust; wer aber den Willen Gottes tut, der bleibt in Ewigkeit.

Warnung vor der antichristlichen Verführung

18 Kinder, es ist die letzte Stunde! Und wie ihr gehört habt, dass der Antichrist* kommt, so sind jetzt viele Antichristen aufgetreten; daran erkennen wir, dass es die letzte Stunde ist. 19 Sie sind von uns ausgegangen, aber sie waren nicht von uns; denn wenn sie von uns gewesen wären, so wären sie bei uns geblieben. Aber es sollte offenbar werden, dass sie alle nicht von uns sind. 20 Und ihr habt die Salbung von dem Heiligen und wisst alles. 21 Ich habe euch nicht geschrieben, als ob ihr die Wahrheit nicht kennen würdet, sondern weil ihr sie kennt und weil keine Lüge aus der Wahrheit ist. 22 Wer ist der Lügner, wenn nicht der, welcher leugnet, dass Jesus der Christus ist? Das ist der Antichrist, der den Vater und den Sohn leugnet. 23 Wer den Sohn leugnet, der hat auch den Vater nicht. Wer den Sohn bekennt, der hat auch den Vater. 24 Was ihr nun von Anfang an gehört habt*, das bleibe in euch! Wenn in euch bleibt, was ihr von Anfang an gehört habt, so werdet auch ihr in dem Sohn und in dem Vater bleiben. 25 Und das ist die Verheißung, die er uns verheißen hat: das ewige Leben. 26 Dies habe ich euch geschrieben von denen, die euch verführen. 27 Und die Salbung, die ihr von ihm empfangen habt, bleibt in euch, und ihr habt es nicht nötig, dass euch jemand lehrt; sondern wie euch die Salbung selbst über alles belehrt, ist es wahr und keine Lüge; und so wie sie euch belehrt hat, werdet ihr in ihm bleiben.

Die wahren Kinder Gottes und ihre Kennzeichen

28 Und nun, Kinder, bleibt in ihm, damit wir Freimütigkeit haben, wenn er erscheint, und uns nicht schämen müssen vor ihm bei seiner Wiederkunft. 29 Wenn ihr wisst, dass er gerecht ist, so erkennt auch, dass jeder, der die Gerechtigkeit tut*, aus ihm geboren ist.
