1After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendour.2With a mighty voice he shouted: ‘ “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!” She has become a dwelling for demons and a haunt for every impure spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.3For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.’
Warning to escape Babylon’s judgment
4Then I heard another voice from heaven say: ‘ “Come out of her, my people,” so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues;5for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.6Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Pour her a double portion from her own cup.7Give her as much torment and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts, “I sit enthroned as queen. I am not a widow;* I will never mourn.”8Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
Threefold woe over Babylon’s fall
9‘When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her.10Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry: ‘ “Woe! Woe to you, great city, you mighty city of Babylon! In one hour your doom has come!”11‘The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no-one buys their cargoes anymore –12cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;13cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.14‘They will say, “The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendour have vanished, never to be recovered.”15The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn16and cry out: ‘ “Woe! Woe to you, great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!17In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!” ‘Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off.18When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, “Was there ever a city like this great city?”19They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out: ‘ “Woe! Woe to you, great city, where all who had ships on the sea became rich through her wealth! In one hour she has been brought to ruin!”20‘Rejoice over her, you heavens! Rejoice, you people of God! Rejoice, apostles and prophets! For God has judged her with the judgment she imposed on you.’
The finality of Babylon’s doom
21Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, and said: ‘With such violence the great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again.22The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters, will never be heard in you again. No worker of any trade will ever be found in you again. The sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again.23The light of a lamp will never shine in you again. The voice of bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again. Your merchants were the world’s important people. By your magic spell all the nations were led astray.24In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people, of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.’

1بعد از اين رؤياها، فرشتهٔ ديگری را ديدم كه با اختيار تام از آسمان پايين آمد. اين فرشته چنان میدرخشيد كه تمام زمين را روشن ساخت.2او با صدای بلند فرياد میزد: «بابل بزرگ ويران شد! به كلی ويران شد! بابل كمينگاه ديوها و شياطين و ارواح ناپاک شده است.3زيرا تمام قومها از شراب شوم زنای آن، سرمست شدهاند. پادشاهان دنيا در آنجا خوشگذرانی كردهاند، و تاجران دنيا از زندگی پرتجمل آن ثروتمند شدهاند.»4در اين وقت، از آسمان صدای ديگری شنيدم كه میگفت: «ای خلق من، از اين شهر دل بكنيد و خود را با گناهانش آلوده نسازيد، و گرنه شما نيز به همان مكافات خواهيد رسيد.5زيرا گناهانش تا فلک بر روی هم انباشته شده است. از این رو، خداوند آماده است تا او را به مجازات جناياتش برساند.6پس، برای كارهای زشتش دو چندان به او سزا دهيد. آن همه جامهای شكنجه كه برای ديگران پر كرد، دو برابر به خودش بنوشانيد.7تا حال زندگیاش غرق در تجمل و خوشگذرانی بوده است؛ از اين پس آن را با شكنجه و عذاب لبريز كنيد. میگويد: ”من بيوهٔ بینوا نيستم؛ من ملكهٔ اين تاج و تخت میباشم؛ هرگز رنگ غم و اندوه را نخواهم ديد.“8پس در عرض يک روز، مرگ و عزا و قحطی دامنگير او خواهد شد و او در آتش خواهد سوخت. چون خداوند توانا اين شهر را به مكافات خواهد رساند.»9آنگاه پادشاهان دنيا كه با او زنا میكردند و از اين كار لذت میبردند، وقتی ببينند دود از خاكسترش بلند میشود، برايش عزا گرفته،10از ترس، دور از او خواهند ايستاد و نالهكنان خواهند گفت: «افسوس كه بابل، آن شهر بزرگ در يک چشم به هم زدن نابود شد!»11تاجران دنيا نيز برايش عزا گرفته، زارزار خواهند گريست، زيرا ديگر كسی نخواهد بود كه اجناسشان را بخرد.12اين شهر، بزرگترين خريدار اجناس ايشان بود، اجناسی نظير طلا و نقره، سنگهای قيمتی و مرواريد، كتانهای لطيف و ابريشمهای ارغوانی و قرمز، انواع چوبهای معطر و زينتآلات عاج، گرانترين كندهكاريهای چوبی، مس و آهن و مرمر، ادويه و عطر، بخور و پماد، كندر و شراب و روغن زيتون، آرد ممتاز و گندم، گاو و گوسفند، اسب و ارّابه، برده و جانهای انسانها.14تاجران اشکريزان خواهند گفت: «تمام چيزهای دوست داشتنیات را از دست دادی. آن خوراكهای لذيذ و تجملات زيبا و خيره كننده كه برايت آنقدر عزيز بود، هرگز دوباره نصيبت نخواهد شد. ديگر خبری از آنها نيست!»15پس، تاجرانی كه با فروش اين اجناس ثروتمند شدهاند، دور ايستاده، از خطری كه ايشان را تهديد میكند خواهند ترسيد و گريهكنان خواهند گفت:16«افسوس كه آن شهر بزرگ با تمام زيبايی و ثروتش، در يک چشم به هم زدن دود شد! شهری كه مثل زن زيبايی بود كه لباسهای نفيس از كتان ارغوانی و قرمز میپوشيد و با طلا و سنگهای قيمتی و مرواريد خود را زينت میداد.»17صاحبان كشتیها و ناخدايان و دريانوردان خواهند ايستاد و از دور18برای شهری كه دود از خاكسترش بالا میرود، اشک ريخته، خواهند گفت: «در تمام دنيا، كجا ديگر چنين شهری پيدا خواهد شد؟»19و از غم و غصه، خاک بر سر خود ريخته، خواهند گفت: «افسوس، افسوس از اين شهر بزرگ! از ثروتهای بیحد و اندازهاش، همهٔ ما ثروتمند شديم؛ و حال در يک لحظه همه چيز دود شد!»20اما تو ای آسمان، از سرنوشت بابل شاد باش! و شما ای فرزندان و فرستادگان و خدمتگزاران خدا شادی كنيد! زيرا خدا سرانجام انتقام شما را از او گرفت.21آنگاه، يک فرشتهٔ پرقدرت، تخته سنگی را كه به شكل آسياب بود برداشت و آن را به دريا انداخت و فرياد زد: «شهر بزرگ بابل تا ابد ناپديد خواهد شد، همانطور كه اين سنگ ناپديد شد.22ديگر هرگز نوای موسيقی در اين شهر شنيده نخواهد شد. هيچ صنعت و صنعتگری در آن نخواهد بود، و ديگر صدای آسياب در آن به گوش نخواهد رسيد.23ديگر هيچ چراغی در آن روشن نخواهد شد و صدای شادی عروس و داماد در آن شنيده نخواهد شد. تاجرانش زمانی بزرگترين سرمايهداران دنيا بودند و اين شهر تمام قومها را با نيرنگهای خود فريب میداد.24خون تمام فرستادگان و خلق خدا كه شهيد شدند، به گردن اين شهر است.»
