1After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.*2When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples3to ask him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’4Jesus replied, ‘Go back and report to John what you hear and see:5the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy* are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.6Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’7As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.10This is the one about whom it is written: ‘ “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.”11Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,* and violent people have been raiding it.13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.14And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.15Whoever has ears, let them hear.16‘To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the market-places and calling out to others:17‘ “We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.”18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon.”19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.’
Woe on unrepentant towns
20Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.21‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.* For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.’
The Father revealed in the Son
25At that time Jesus said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.26Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.27‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows the Son except the Father, and no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.28‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’

1پس از آنكه عيسی اين احكام را به شاگردانش داد، از آنجا به شهرهای مجاور به راه افتاد تا در آنجا نيز مردم را تعليم دهد و موعظه كند.2وقتی يحيی در زندان خبر معجزههای عيسی را شنيد، دو نفر از شاگردان خود را نزد او فرستاد تا از او بپرسند:3«آيا تو همان مسيح موعود هستی، يا هنوز بايد منتظر آمدن او باشيم؟»4عيسی در جواب ايشان فرمود: «نزد يحيی بازگرديد و آنچه ديديد و شنيديد، برای او بيان كنيد كه5چگونه نابينايان بينا میشوند، لنگان راه میروند، جذامیها شفا میيابند، ناشنوایان شنوا میگردند، مردهها زنده میشوند و فقرا پيغام نجاتبخش خدا را میشنوند.6سپس به او بگوييد: خوشا به حال كسی كه به من شک نكند.»7وقتی شاگردان يحيی رفتند، عيسی دربارهٔ يحيی با مردم سخن گفت و فرمود: «آن مرد كه برای ديدنش به بيابان يهوديه رفته بوديد، كه بود؟ آيا مردی بود سست چون علف، كه از هر وزش بادی میلرزيد؟8آيا مردی بود با لباسهای گرانبها؟ كسانی كه لباسهای گرانبها میپوشند در قصرها زندگی میكنند، نه در بيابان.9آيا رفته بوديد پيامبری را ببينيد؟ بلی، به شما میگويم كه يحيی از يک پيامبر نيز بزرگتر است.10او همان كسی است كه كتاب آسمانی دربارهاش میفرمايد: من رسول خود را پيش از تو میفرستم تا راه را برايت باز كند.11«مطمئن باشيد در جهان تا به حال كسی بزرگتر از يحيی نبوده است؛ با وجود اين، كوچكترين شخص در ملكوت خدا از او بزرگتر است.12از وقتی كه يحيی به موعظه كردن و غُسل تعميد دادن شروع كرد تا به حال، ملكوت خداوندی رو به گسترش است و مردان زورآور آن را مورد هجوم قرار میدهند.13تمام نوشتههای تورات و پيامبران پيش از يحيی، از چيزهايی خبر میدادند كه میبايست بعداً اتفاق بيفتد.14اگر بتوانيد حقيقت را قبول كنيد، بايد بگويم كه يحيی همان الياس نبی است كه كتاب آسمانی میگويد میبايست بيايد.15گوشهايتان را خوب باز كنيد و به آنچه میگويم توجه كنيد.16«و اما به اين مردم چه بگويم؟ مانند كودكانی هستند كه در كوچهها به هنگام بازی، با بیحوصلگی به همبازيهای خود میگويند:17”نه به ساز ما میرقصيد، و نه به نوحهٔ ما گريه میكنيد.“18زيرا دربارهٔ يحيی كه لب به شراب نمیزد و اغلب روزهدار بود، میگوييد: ”ديوانه است.“19اما به من كه میخورم و مینوشم ايراد میگيريد كه پرخور و ميگسار و همنشين بدكاران و گناهكاران است. اگر عاقل بوديد چنين نمیگفتيد و میفهميديد چرا او چنان میكرد و من چنين.»
سزای بیايمانی
20آنگاه عيسی شروع كرد به توبيخ مردم شهرهايی كه بيشتر معجزاتش را در آنجا انجام داده بود، ولی ايشان به سوی خدا بازگشت نكرده بودند. او فرمود:21«وای بر تو ای خورزين و وای بر تو ای بيتصيدا! اگر معجزههايی كه من در كوچه و بازار شما انجام دادم، در صور و صيدون فاسد انجام میدادم، اهالی آنجا مدتها قبل، از روی خجالت و پشيمانی پلاسپوش و خاكسترنشين میشدند و توبه میكردند.22مطمئن باشيد عاقبتِ صور و صيدون در روز قيامت خيلی بهتر از شما خواهد بود.23ای كَفَرناحوم كه سر به آسمان كشيدهای، عاقبت به جهنم سرنگون خواهی شد چون اگر معجزاتی كه من در تو كردم، در سدوم میكردم، آن شهر تا به حال باقی مانده بود.24مطمئن باش عاقبتِ سدوم در روز قيامت بهتر از تو خواهد بود.»
«بياييد نزد من»
25در اين هنگام عيسی دعا كرد: «ای پدر، مالک آسمان و زمين، شكرت میكنم كه حقيقت را از كسانی كه خود را دانا میپندارند پنهان ساختی و آن را به كسانی كه همچون كودكانْ سادهدلند، آشكار نمودی.26بلی ای پدر، خواست تو چنين بود.27«پدر آسمانی همه چيز را به دست من سپرده است. فقط پدر آسمانی است كه پسرش را میشناسد و همينطور پدر آسمانی را فقط پسرش میشناسد و كسانی كه پسر بخواهد او را به ايشان بشناساند.28ای تمام كسانی كه زير يوغ سنگين زحمت میكشيد، نزد من آييد و من به شما آرامش خواهم داد.29يوغ مرا به دوش بكشيد و بگذاريد من شما را تعليم دهم، چون من مهربان و فروتن هستم، و به جانهای شما راحتی خواهم بخشيد. زيرا باری كه من بر دوش شما میگذارم، سبک است.»
