1The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus2and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed.3(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.4When they come from the market-place they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.*)5So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, ‘Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?’6He replied, ‘Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: ‘ “These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.7They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.”8You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.’9And he continued, ‘You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe* your own traditions!10For Moses said, “Honour your father and mother,”* and, “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.”*11But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God) –12then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother.13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.’14Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, ‘Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.15Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.’*17After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable.18‘Are you so dull?’ he asked. ‘Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them?19For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.’ (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)20He went on: ‘What comes out of a person is what defiles them.21For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come – sexual immorality, theft, murder,22adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.23All these evils come from inside and defile a person.’
Jesus honours a Syro-Phoenician woman’s faith
24Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre.* He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret.25In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet.26The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.27‘First let the children eat all they want,’ he told her, ‘for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.’28‘Lord,’ she replied, ‘even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.’29Then he told her, ‘For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.’30She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
Jesus heals a deaf and mute man
31Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.*32There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.33After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spat and touched the man’s tongue.34He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, ‘Ephphatha!’ (which means ‘Be opened!’).35At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosed and he began to speak plainly.36Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.37People were overwhelmed with amazement. ‘He has done everything well,’ they said. ‘He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.’

1روزی، چند نفر از روحانیون يهود از اورشليم آمدند تا دربارهٔ عيسی تحقيقاتی به عمل آورند.2ايشان وقتی متوجه شدند كه بعضی از شاگردان او با دستهای نجس، يعنی ناشسته، غذا میخورند، آنان را سرزنش كردند.3زيرا يهوديان بخصوص فرقهٔ فريسيان تا دستها را تا آرنج نشويند، هرگز دست به غذا نمیزنند. اين يكی از عادتهای قديمی ايشان است.4از این رو، هر بار كه از بازار به خانه میآيند، پيش از غذا هميشه بايد به اين ترتيب شستشو كنند. اين فقط يک نمونه از قوانین و مقررات زيادی است كه طی ساليان دراز بجا آوردهاند و هنوز هم به آن سخت پایبند میباشند. نمونهٔ ديگر، شستن پيالهها، ديگها و كاسههاست.5روحانیون از عيسی پرسيدند: «چرا پيروانت اين آداب و رسوم قديمی ما را زير پا میگذارند و پيش از غذا، دستهای خود را نمیشويند؟ آنها با دستهای نجس غذا میخورند.»6عيسی در پاسخ ايشان فرمود: «ای آدمهای دورو! اشعيای پيامبر در وصف شما خوب گفته است كه: اين مردم با چه زبان شيرينی دربارهٔ خدا سخن میگويند اما در قلبشان محبتی برای او ندارند. عبادتشان ظاهرسازی است، چون مردم را وادار میكنند به جای احكام خدا، به مقررات پوچ ايشان گوش دهند. بلی، اشعيا درست گفته است.8چون شما دستورات مهم خدا را كنار گذاشتهايد و آداب و رسوم خود را جانشين آن ساختهايد.9حتی حاضريد احكام خدا را زير پا بگذاريد تا آداب و رسوم خودتان را حفظ كنيد.10«مثلاً موسی از طرف خدا اين دستور را به شما داد: به پدر و مادرت احترام بگذار، و هر كه پدر و مادر خود را ناسزا گويد، بايد كشته شود.11ولی شما میگوييد كه هيچ اشكالی ندارد اگر كسی به پدر و مادر محتاج خود كمک نكند و بگويد: ببخشيد، نمیتوانم به شما كمک بكنم، چون آنچه میبايست به شما بدهم، در راه خدا صدقه دادهام. و به اين ترتيب، فرمان خدا را زير پا میگذاريد تا دستورات خودتان حفظ شود. و اين فقط يک نمونه است. چه كارهای ديگری كه شما نمیكنيد!»14آنگاه عيسی مردم را فرا خوانده به ايشان فرمود: «خوب گوش كنيد و سعی كنيد بفهميد. هرگز خوراكی كه انسان میخورد، نمیتواند او را نجس كند. فكرها و گفتار زشت انسان است كه او را نجس میسازند.»17وقتی عيسی وارد خانهای شد تا از جمعيت دور باشد، شاگردان مقصود او را از اين گفته جويا شدند.18عيسی به ايشان فرمود: «شما نيز اين مسايل را درک نمیكنيد؟ مگر نمیدانيد كه آنچه میخوريد، به روحتان لطمهای نمیزند و آن را نجس نمیسازد؟19زيرا خوراک با قلب و روح شما كاری ندارد، بلكه از معدهٔ شما عبور میكند و بيرون میرود.» (با اين گفته، عيسی نشان داد كه هر نوع خوراک، پاک و حلال است.)20سپس افزود: «آنچه انسان را نجس میسازد، افكاری است كه از وجود او تراوش میكند.21چون از وجود و قلب انسان است كه فكرهای نادرست بيرون میآيند، و منجر به اعمال نادرست میشوند، اعمالی نظير: دزدی، آدمکشی، زناكاری،22طمع به مال ديگران، شرارت، فريب و تقلب، شهوت، حسادت، بدگويی و غيبت، خودپسندی و هرگونه حماقت ديگر.23تمام اين چيزهای شرمآور از وجود و قلب انسان سرچشمه میگيرد و انسان را نجس ساخته، از خدا دور میكند.»
ايمان يک زن غيريهودی
24آنگاه عيسی ايالت جليل را ترک گفته، به شهرهای صور و صيدون رفت. او وارد خانهای شد و نمیخواست كسی متوجه آمدنش گردد؛ ولی ميسر نشد، چون مانند هميشه خبر ورودش فوری در همه جا پيچيد.25همان موقع، زنی نزد او آمد كه دختر كوچكش گرفتار روح ناپاک بود. او خبر معجزات عيسی را شنيده بود. از این رو آمد و بر پايهای عيسی افتاد،26و التماس كرد كه فرزندش را از شر روح ناپاک نجات دهد. اين زن اهل فينيقيهٔ سوريه و غيريهودی بود.27عيسی به او گفت: «من بايد نخست قوم خود، يعنی يهوديان را ياری كنم. خوب نيست نان فرزندان را بگيريم و مقابل سگها بيندازيم.»28زن جواب داد: «درست است سَروَر من. ولی حتی سگها نيز از پس ماندهٔ خوراک فرزندان خانه میخورند.»29عيسی گفت: «آفرين، نيكو پاسخ گفتی. به خاطر همين پاسخ، دخترت را شفا میبخشم. به خانهات برگرد، روح ناپاک از دخترت بيرون رفته است.»30هنگامی كه زن به خانهاش رسيد، ديد دخترش آرام بر تخت دراز كشيده و روح ناپاک از او بيرون رفته است.
شفای كر و لال
31سپس عيسی از صور به صيدون رفت و از راه دكاپوليس به طرف درياچهٔ جليل بازگشت.32در آنجا مردی را پيش او آوردند كه كر بود و در ضمن لكنت زبان هم داشت. آنان التماس كردند تا عيسی دستهايش را بر سر او بگذارد و او را شفا دهد.33عيسی او را از ميان جمعيت به گوشهای برد و انگشتانش را در گوش او گذاشت و آب دهان انداخت و به زبان مرد ماليد.34سپس به سوی آسمان نگاه كرد و آهی كشيد و گفت: «باز شو!»35بلافاصله آن مرد شفا يافت و توانست به خوبی بشنود و صحبت كند.36عيسی به مردم فرمود كه به كسی چيزی نگويند. اما هر چقدر بيشتر ايشان را قدغن میكرد، بيشتر خبر را پخش میكردند،37چون اين معجزه در آنها تأثير زيادی گذاشته بود. ايشان به يكديگر میگفتند: «كارهای اين مرد چه عالی است. حتی كر و لال را نيز شفا میبخشد.»
