1After the time of Abimelek, a man of Issachar named Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, rose to save Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.2He led* Israel for twenty-three years; then he died, and was buried in Shamir.
Jair
3He was followed by Jair of Gilead, who led Israel for twenty-two years.4He had thirty sons, who rode thirty donkeys. They controlled thirty towns in Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth Jair.*5When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.
Jephthah
6Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the Lord and no longer served him,7he became angry with them. He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,8who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.9The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim; Israel was in great distress.10Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord, ‘We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.’11The Lord replied, ‘When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,12the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites* oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?13But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.14Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!’15But the Israelites said to the Lord, ‘We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.’16Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer.17When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.18The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, ‘Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head over all who live in Gilead.’

1پس از مرگ ابيملک، «تولع» (پسر فواه و نوهٔ دودا) برای رهايی اسرائيل به پا خاست. او از قبيلهٔ يساكار بود، ولی در شهر شامير واقع در كوهستان افرايم سكونت داشت.2وی مدت بيست و سه سال رهبری اسرائيل را به عهده داشت. وقتی مرد، او را در شامير دفن كردند3و«يائير» جانشين وی شد. يائير از اهالی جلعاد بود و بيست و دو سال رهبر اسرائيل بود.4او سی پسر داشت كه دسته جمعی بر سی الاغ سوار میشدند. آنها در سرزمين جلعاد سی شهر داشتند كه هنوز آنها را«شهرهای يائير» مینامند.5وقتی يائير مرد، او را در قامون دفن كردند.

6آنگاه مردم اسرائيل بار ديگر از خداوند روگردان شده، به پرستش بعل و عشتاروت و خدايان سوريه، صيدون، موآب، عمون و فلسطين پرداختند و خداوند را ترک گفته، ديگر او را پرستش نكردند.7پس خشم خداوند بر اسرائيل افروخته شد و او فلسطینیها و عمونیها را بر اسرائيل مسلط ساخت. آنها بر اسرائيلیهايی كه در سمت شرقی رود اردن در سرزمين اموریها (يعنی در جلعاد) بودند، ظلم میكردند. همچنين عمونیها از رود اردن گذشته، به قبايل يهودا، بنيامين و افرايم هجوم میبردند. اسرائيل مدت هجده سال زير ظلم و ستم قرار داشت.10سرانجام بنیاسرائيل به سوی خداوند بازگشت نموده، التماس كردند كه ايشان را نجات بخشد. آنها اعتراف نموده، گفتند: «خداوندا نسبت به تو گناه ورزيدهايم، چونكه تو را ترک نموده، بتها را پرستش كردهايم.»11ولی خداوند به ايشان فرمود: «مگر من شما را از دست مصریان، اموریها، عمونیها، فلسطينیها،12صيدونیها، عماليقیها، و معونیها نرهانيدم؟ مگر به هنگام تمام سختيها به داد شما نرسيدم؟13با وجود اين، شما مرا ترک نموده، به پرستش خدايان ديگر پرداختيد. پس من ديگر شما را رهايی نخواهم بخشيد.14برويد و از خدايانی كه برای خود انتخاب كردهايد كمک بطلبيد! بگذاريد در اين هنگام سختی، آنها شما را برهانند!»15اما ايشان گفتند: «ما گناه كردهايم. هر چه صلاح میدانی با ما بكن، ولی فقط يكبار ديگر ما را از دست دشمنانمان نجات بده.»16آنگاه خدايان بيگانهٔ خود را ترک گفته، تنها خداوند را عبادت نمودند و خداوند به سبب سختيهای اسرائيل اندوهگين شد.17در آن موقع سپاهيان عمونی در جلعاد اردو زده، آماده میشدند كه به اردوی اسرائيلیها در مصفه حمله كنند.18رهبران اسرائيلی از يكديگر میپرسيدند: «كيست كه فرماندهی نيروهای ما را به عهده بگيرد و با عمونیها بجنگد؟ هر کس كه داوطلب شود رهبر مردم جلعاد خواهد شد!»
