1Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things – the kings in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites) –2they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.3However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,4they resorted to a ruse: they went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded* with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.5They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and mouldy.6Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the Israelites, ‘We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us.’7The Israelites said to the Hivites, ‘But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty with you?’8‘We are your servants,’ they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, ‘Who are you and where do you come from?’9They answered: ‘Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the Lord your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt,10and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan – Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.11And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, “Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, ‘We are your servants; make a treaty with us.’ ”12This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and mouldy it is.13And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey.’14The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not enquire of the Lord.15Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.16Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbours, living near them.17So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.18But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders,19but all the leaders answered, ‘We have given them our oath by the Lord, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now.20This is what we will do to them: we will let them live, so that God’s wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them.’21They continued, ‘Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water-carriers in the service of the whole assembly.’ So the leaders’ promise to them was kept.22Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, ‘Why did you deceive us by saying, “We live a long way from you,” while actually you live near us?23You are now under a curse: you will never be released from service as woodcutters and water-carriers for the house of my God.’24They answered Joshua, ‘Your servants were clearly told how the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.25We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.’26So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them.27That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water-carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the Lord at the place the Lord would choose. And that is what they are to this day.

1وقتی پادشاهان سرزمينهای همسايه از فتوحات بنیاسرائيل باخبر شدند، به خاطر حفظ جان و مال خود با هم متحد گشتند تا با يوشع و بنیاسرائيل بجنگند. اينها پادشاهان قبايل حيتی، اموری، كنعانی، فرزی، حوی و يبوسی بودند كه در نواحی سمت غربی رود اردن و سواحل دريای مديترانه تا کوههای لبنان در شمال، زندگی میكردند.3اما مردم جبعون وقتی خبر پيروزی يوشع بر شهرهای اريحا و عای را شنيدند، برای نجات جان خود، عوض جنگ به حيله متوسل شدند. آنها گروهی را با لباسهای ژنده و كفشهای كهنه و پينه زده، الاغهايی با پالانهای مندرس و مقداری نان كپک زده خشک و چند مشک شراب كه كهنه و وصلهدار بودند نزد يوشع فرستادند.6وقتی اين گروه به اردوگاه اسرائيل در جلجال رسيدند، نزد يوشع و ساير مردان اسرائيلی رفته، گفتند: «ما از سرزمين دوری به اينجا آمدهايم تا از شما بخواهيم با ما پيمان صلح ببنديد.»7اما اسرائيلیها گفتند: «ما چطور بدانيم كه شما ساكن اين سرزمين نيستيد؟ چون اگر در اين سرزمين ساكن باشيد نمیتوانيم با شما پيمان صلح ببنديم.»8آنها به يوشع گفتند: «ما بندگان تو هستيم.» ولی يوشع از آنها پرسيد: «شما چه كسانی هستيد و از كجا آمدهايد؟»9گفتند: «ما بندگانت از يک سرزمين دور به اينجا آمدهايم؛ زيرا شهرت خداوند، خدايتان به گوش ما رسيده است و شنيدهايم كه او چه كارهای بزرگی در مصر كرد10و چه بلايی بر سر دو پادشاه اموری كه در طرف شرق اردن بودند يعنی سيحون، پادشاه حشبون و عوج، پادشاه باشان كه در عشتاروت حكومت میكرد، آورد.11پس بزرگان و مردم ما از ما خواستند كه توشهای برای سفر طولانی بگيريم و به حضور شما بياييم و بگوييم كه ما بندگان شما هستيم و از شما میخواهيم با ما پيمان صلح ببنديد.12وقتی عازم سفر شديم اين نانها تازه از تنور درآمده بودند، اما حالا چنانكه میبينيد خشک شده و كپک زدهاند!13اين مشكهای شراب در آغاز سفر، نو بودند، اما حالا كهنه شده و تركيدهاند! لباسها و كفشهای ما به سبب طولانی بودن راه، مندرس شدهاند.»14يوشع و بزرگان اسرائيل با ديدن توشهٔ آنها، حرفهايشان را باور كردند و بدون آنكه با خداوند مشورت نمايند، يوشع با آنها پيمان صلح بست و قول داد كه ايشان را از بين نبرد و بزرگان اسرائيل نيز قسم خوردند كه اين پيمان را نشكنند.16هنوز سه روز از اين موضوع نگذشته بود كه معلوم شد اين گروه مسافر از همسايگانشان در آن سرزمين هستند و در همان نزديكی زندگی میكنند!17بنیاسرائيل در مسير پيشروی خود، سه روز بعد به شهرهای ايشان رسيدند. (نام اين شهرها جبعون، كفيره، بئيروت و قريه يعاريم بود.)18اما به خاطر سوگندی كه بزرگان اسرائيل به نام خداوند، خدای اسرائيل ياد كرده بودند نتوانستند آنها را از بين ببرند. اسرائیلیها به بزرگان قوم اعتراض كردند،19اما آنها در جواب گفتند: «ما به نام خداوند، خدای اسرائيل سوگند خوردهايم كه به آنها صدمهای نزنيم.20پس بايد به سوگند خود وفا نموده، بگذاريم كه زنده بمانند؛ چون اگر پيمانی را كه با آنان بستهايم بشكنيم، خشم خداوند بر ما افروخته خواهد شد.»21سپس اضافه كردند: «بگذاريد ايشان زنده بمانند و برای ما هيزم بشكنند و آب بياورند.»22يوشع جبعونیها را احضار كرده، گفت: «چرا ما را فريب داده، گفتيد كه از سرزمين بسيار دور آمدهايد و حال آنكه همسايهٔ نزديک ما هستيد؟23پس شما زير لعنت خواهيد بود و بعد از اين بايد هميشه به عنوان غلام برای خانهٔ خدای ما هيزم بشكنيد و آب مورد نياز را تهيه كنيد.»24آنها گفتند: «چون شنيده بوديم كه خداوند، خدای شما به خدمتگزار خود موسی دستور داده بود تمام اين سرزمين را تصرف نمايد و ساكنانش را نابود كند، پس بسيار ترسيديم و به خاطر نجات جان خود اين كار را كرديم.25ولی حالا در اختيار شما هستيم، هر طور كه صلاح میدانيد با ما رفتار كنيد.»26يوشع به مردم اسرائيل اجازه نداد آنها را بكشند،27و ايشان را برای شكستن هيزم و كشيدن آب برای مردم اسرائيل و قربانگاه خداوند تعيين نمود. ايشان تا امروز به كار خود در جايی كه خداوند برای عبادت تعيين كرده است ادامه میدهند.
