1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord:2‘Stand at the gate of the Lord’s house and there proclaim this message: ‘ “Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord.3This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.4Do not trust in deceptive words and say, ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!’5If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly,6if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm,7then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave to your ancestors for ever and ever.8But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.9‘ “Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury,* burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known,10and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, ‘We are safe’ – safe to do all these detestable things?11Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the Lord.12‘ “Go now to the place in Shiloh where I first made a dwelling for my Name, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel.13While you were doing all these things, declares the Lord, I spoke to you again and again, but you did not listen; I called you, but you did not answer.14Therefore, what I did to Shiloh I will now do to the house that bears my Name, the temple you trust in, the place I gave to you and your ancestors.15I will thrust you from my presence, just as I did all your fellow Israelites, the people of Ephraim.”16‘So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen to you.17Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?18The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. They pour out drink offerings to other gods to arouse my anger.19But am I the one they are provoking? declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?20‘ “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place – on man and beast, on the trees of the field and on the crops of your land – and it will burn and not be quenched.21‘ “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat yourselves!22For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices,23but I gave them this command: obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you.24But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backwards and not forwards.25From the time your ancestors left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again I sent you my servants the prophets.26But they did not listen to me or pay attention. They were stiff-necked and did more evil than their ancestors.”27‘When you tell them all this, they will not listen to you; when you call to them, they will not answer.28Therefore say to them, “This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction. Truth has perished; it has vanished from their lips.29‘ “Cut off your hair and throw it away; take up a lament on the barren heights, for the Lord has rejected and abandoned this generation that is under his wrath.
The valley of slaughter
30‘ “The people of Judah have done evil in my eyes, declares the Lord. They have set up their detestable idols in the house that bears my Name and have defiled it.31They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire – something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind.32So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room.33Then the carcasses of this people will become food for the birds and the wild animals, and there will be no-one to frighten them away.34I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, for the land will become desolate.

1آنگاه خداوند به ارميا فرمود2كه كنار دروازهٔ خانهٔ خداوند بايستد و اين پيام را به گوش مردم برساند: ای مردم يهودا، ای تمام كسانی كه در اينجا خداوند را عبادت میكنيد، به كلام خداوند گوش فرا دهيد!3خداوند قادر متعال، خدای قوم اسرائيل میفرمايد: «اگر راهها و اعمالتان را تغيير داده، اصلاح كنيد، اجازه خواهم داد در سرزمين خود باقی بمانيد.4فريب سخنان دروغ را نخوريد، فكر نكنيد كه چون خانهٔ من در اينجاست نخواهم گذاشت كه اورشليم ويران شود.5من فقط در صورتی اجازه خواهم داد در اين سرزمين باقی بمانيد در سرزمينی كه جاودانه به پدرانتان دادهام كه از كردار و رفتار بد دست كشيده، با يكديگر با درستی و انصاف رفتار كنيد، از يتيمان، بيوهزنان و غريبان بهرهكشی نكنيد، از ريختن خون بیگناهان دست برداريد و از پيروی خدايان ديگر كه باعث زيان و لطمهٔ شماست روی گردان شويد.8«اما شما به سخنان دروغ و بیپايه اميد بستهايد؛9دزدی میكنيد، مرتكب زنا و قتل میشويد، به دروغ قسم میخوريد، برای بت بعل بخور میسوزانيد و خدايان بيگانه را میپرستيد،10و بعد به خانهای كه به نام من ناميده شده آمده، در حضور من میايستيد و میگوييد: ”ما در امن و امانيم!“ و باز برمیگرديد و غرق كارهای زشتتان میشويد.11مگر خانهای كه نام مرا بر خود دارد، آشيانهٔ دزدان است؟ هر آنچه در آنجا میكنيد، میبينم.12«به شيلوه برويد، به شهری كه نخستين عبادتگاه من در آن قرار داشت، و ببينيد به سبب گناهان قومم اسرائيل، با آن چه كردم!13به سبب تمام گناهانی كه مرتكب شدهايد همان بلا را بر سر شما نيز خواهم آورد. با اينكه بارها در اين مورد با شما سخن گفته، هشدار دادم و شما را فرا خواندم، ولی شما نه گوش كرديد و نه جواب داديد. پس همانطور كه اجازه دادم خانهٔ مرا در شيلوه خراب كنند، اجازه خواهم داد تا اين خانه را نيز خراب كنند. بلی، اين خانه را كه به نام من بوده و چشم اميدتان به آن است و اين سرزمين را كه به شما و به پدرانتان دادهام، ويران خواهم كرد؛15همانطور كه برادران افرايمی* شما را تبعيد نمودم، شما را نيز تبعيد خواهم كرد.
نافرمانی قوم
16«پس تو ای ارميا، ديگر برای اين قوم دعای خير نكن و برای آنها گريه و زاری و شفاعت ننما، چون نخواهم پذيرفت.17مگر نمیبينی در تمام شهرهای يهودا و در كوچههای اورشليم چه میكنند؟18ببين چطور بچهها هيزم جمع میكنند، پدرها آتش میافروزند، زنها خمير درست میكنند تا برای بت ”ملكه آسمان“ گردههای نان بپزند و برای ساير خدايانشان هدايای نوشيدنی تقديم كنند و به اين ترتيب مرا به خشم آورند!19آيا اين كارها، به من لطمه میزند؟ بيشتر از همه به خودشان ضرر میرسانند و خودشان را رسوا میكنند.20پس من آتش خشم و غضب خود را فرو خواهم ريخت. بلی، شعلههای خشم و غضب من، اين عبادتگاه را سوزانده، مردم، حيوانات، درختان و محصولات زمين را از ميان خواهد برد و كسی نخواهد توانست آن را خاموش كند!»21خداوند قادر متعال، خدای اسرائيل میفرمايد: «گوشت قربانیهایی را كه ذبح میكنيد چه آنهايی را كه مجاز به خوردنشان هستيد، چه آنهايی كه خوردنشان ممنوع است، همه را بخوريد،22چون وقتی پدران شما را از مصر بيرون آوردم، و با ايشان سخن گفته، دستورات خود را به ايشان دادم از ايشان هديه و قربانی نخواستم،23بلكه آنچه به ايشان فرموده بودم اين بود: از من پيروی كنيد تا من خدای شما باشم و شما قوم من! فقط به هر راهی كه من میگويم، برويد تا همه چيز برايتان به خير و خوبی باشد.24ولی ايشان گوش فرا ندادند و توجهی ننمودند، بلكه به دنبال هوس دل خود رفتند و به جای پيشرفت و بهتر شدن، وضعشان بدتر شد.25از روزی كه پدران شما از مصر بيرون آمدند تا به امروز، خادمين يعنی انبيای خود را هر روز نزد شما فرستادم.26ولی نه به سخنانشان گوش داديد و نه به ايشان اعتنايی كرديد، بلكه سختدل و ياغی شده بدتر از پدرانتان رفتار نموديد.27«بنابراين ای ارميا، هر آنچه میفرمايم به ايشان بگو، ولی انتظار نداشته باش گوش بدهند! به ايشان هشدار بده، ولی منتظر پاسخی نباش.28بگو كه ايشان قومی هستند كه نمیخواهند دستورات خداوند، خدای خود را اطاعت كنند و نمیخواهند درس عبرت بگيرند، چون راستی و درستی از بين رفته و سخنی نيز از آن به ميان نمیآيد.»
گناه در وادی هنوم
29خداوند میفرمايد: «ای اهالی اورشليم، عزاداری كنيد؛ موی خود را به نشانهٔ شرم تراشيده، دور بريزيد؛ بر بلندیها برآييد و نوحهسرايی كنيد، چون من از شما خشمگين هستم و شما را طرد كرده و ترک نمودهام.30اهالی يهودا در برابر چشمان من شرارت ورزيدهاند و بتهای خود را به خانهٔ من آورده و آنجا را نجس ساختهاند.31در وادی ”ابن هنوم“ نيز قربانگاهی به نام ”توفت“ بنا نمودهاند و در آنجا پسران و دختران خود را برای بتها زندهزنده در آتش، قربانی میكنند كار زشت و هولناكی كه نه امر فرموده بودم و نه حتی از خاطرم گذشته بود.32بنابراين روزی خواهد رسيد كه ديگر به آنجا ”توفت“ يا وادی ”ابن هنوم“ نخواهند گفت، بلكه آن را ”وادی كشتارگاه“ خواهند ناميد، چون اجساد بیشماری از كشتهشدگان را در آنجا دفن خواهند كرد، طوری كه جايی باقی نماند؛33و لاشههای قوم من خوراک پرندگان هوا و حيوانات بيابان خواهد شد و كسی باقی نخواهد ماند كه آنها را براند.34من آوای سرود و شادمانی و هلهلهٔ عروس و داماد را از شهرهای يهودا و كوچههای اورشليم قطع خواهم نمود و اين سرزمين را به ويرانه مبدل خواهم ساخت.»
