1‘Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her squares. If you can find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will forgive this city.2Although they say, “As surely as the Lord lives,” still they are swearing falsely.’3Lord, do not your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain; you crushed them, but they refused correction. They made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent.4I thought, ‘These are only the poor; they are foolish, for they do not know the way of the Lord, the requirements of their God.5So I will go to the leaders and speak to them; surely they know the way of the Lord, the requirements of their God.’ But with one accord they too had broken off the yoke and torn off the bonds.6Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the desert will ravage them, a leopard will lie in wait near their towns to tear to pieces any who venture out, for their rebellion is great and their backslidings many.7‘Why should I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me and sworn by gods that are not gods. I supplied all their needs, yet they committed adultery and thronged to the houses of prostitutes.8They are well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for another man’s wife.9Should I not punish them for this?’ declares the Lord. ‘Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this?10‘Go through her vineyards and ravage them, but do not destroy them completely. Strip off her branches, for these people do not belong to the Lord.11The people of Israel and the people of Judah have been utterly unfaithful to me,’ declares the Lord.12They have lied about the Lord; they said, ‘He will do nothing! No harm will come to us; we will never see sword or famine.13The prophets are but wind and the word is not in them; so let what they say be done to them.’14Therefore this is what the Lord God Almighty says: ‘Because the people have spoken these words, I will make my words in your mouth a fire and these people the wood it consumes.15People of Israel,’ declares the Lord, ‘I am bringing a distant nation against you – an ancient and enduring nation, a people whose language you do not know, whose speech you do not understand.16Their quivers are like an open grave; all of them are mighty warriors.17They will devour your harvests and food, devour your sons and daughters; they will devour your flocks and herds, devour your vines and fig-trees. With the sword they will destroy the fortified cities in which you trust.18‘Yet even in those days,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will not destroy you completely.19And when the people ask, “Why has the Lord our God done all this to us?” you will tell them, “As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your own land, so now you will serve foreigners in a land not your own.”20‘Announce this to the descendants of Jacob and proclaim it in Judah:21Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear:22Should you not fear me?’ declares the Lord. ‘Should you not tremble in my presence? I made the sand a boundary for the sea, an everlasting barrier it cannot cross. The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail; they may roar, but they cannot cross it.23But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts; they have turned aside and gone away.24They do not say to themselves, “Let us fear the Lord our God, who gives autumn and spring rains in season, who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.”25Your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good.26‘Among my people are the wicked who lie in wait like men who snare birds and like those who set traps to catch people.27Like cages full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; they have become rich and powerful28and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not seek justice. They do not promote the case of the fatherless; they do not defend the just cause of the poor.29Should I not punish them for this?’ declares the Lord. ‘Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this?30‘A horrible and shocking thing has happened in the land:31the prophets prophesy lies, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?

1خداوند میفرمايد: «تمام كوچههای اورشليم را بگرديد. بر سر چهارراهها بايستيد. همه جا را خوب جستجو كنيد! اگر بتوانيد حتی يک شخص با انصاف و درستكار پيدا كنيد، من اين شهر را از بين نخواهم برد!2اين قوم حتی به نام من قسم میخورند!»3ای خداوند، تو به يک چيز اهميت میدهی و آن راستی و درستی است. تو سعی كردی ايشان را اصلاح كنی، اما آنها نخواستند؛ هر چند ايشان را زدی، ولی دردی احساس نكردند! روی خود را از سنگ هم سختتر كردهاند و نمیخواهند توبه كنند.4آنگاه گفتم: «از اشخاص فقير و نادان چه انتظاری میشود داشت؟ آنها از راهها و فرمانهای خدا چيزی نمیفهمند! پس چطور میتوانند دستورات او را اطاعت كنند؟5بنابراين نزد رهبران ايشان رفته و با آنها وارد گفتگو خواهم شد، زيرا آنها راههای خداوند و دستورات او را میدانند.» ولی ديدم كه ايشان هم از پيروی خدا برگشته و عليه او سر به طغيان برداشتهاند.6به همين دليل شيرهای درندهٔ جنگل به جان ايشان خواهند افتاد، گرگهای بيابان به ايشان حمله خواهند كرد و پلنگها در اطراف شهرهايشان كمين خواهند كرد تا هر كس را كه بيرون برود، پارهپاره كنند؛ زيرا گناهانشان از حد گذشته و بارها از خدا روی برگرداندهاند.7خداوند میگويد: «ديگر چگونه میتوانم شما را ببخشم؟ چون حتی فرزندانتان مرا ترک گفتهاند و آنچه را كه خدا نيست میپرستند. من خوراک به آنها دادم تا سير بشوند، ولی به جای تشكر، غرق زناكاری شدند و وقت خود را با فاحشهها تلف كردند.8آنها مثل اسبان سير و سرحالی هستند كه برای جفت مادهٔ همسايهٔ خود شيهه میكشند.9آيا برای اين كارهای شرمآور تنبيهشان نكنم؟ آيا نبايد از چنين قومی انتقام بگيرم؟10پس ای دشمنان به تاكستانهايشان هجوم ببريد و خرابشان كنيد! ولی به کلی نابود نكنيد. شاخههايشان را قطع كنيد، چون از آن خداوند نيستند.»

11خداوند میفرمايد: «مردم اسرائيل و مردم يهودا به من خيانت بزرگی كردهاند؛12ايشان مرا انكار كرده و گفتهاند: خدا با ما كاری ندارد! هيچ بلايی بر سر ما نخواهد آمد! نه قحطی خواهد شد و نه جنگ!13انبیا، همگی طبلهای توخالی هستند و كلام خدا در دهان هيچيک از ايشان نيست؛ بلايی كه ما را از آن میترسانند، بر سر خودشان خواهد آمد!»14از اين رو خداوند قادر متعال به من چنين فرمود: «برای اين گونه سخنان است كه من كلام خود را در دهان تو ای ارميا، مانند آتش میسازم و اين قوم را همانند هيزم میگردانم تا ايشان را بسوزاند.»15خداوند میفرمايد: «ای بنیاسرائيل، من قومی را از دور دست بر ضد تو خواهم فرستاد، قومی نيرومند و قديمی را كه زبانشان را نمیفهمی.16كمانداران آنها همه جنگجويانی نيرومندند كه بدون ترحم میكشند.17آنها خرمن تو را غارت كرده، نان فرزندانت را خواهند برد؛ گلههای گوسفند و رمههای گاو، انگور و انجير تو را به يغما برده، شهرهای حصاردارت را كه خيال میكنی در امن و امانند، تاراج خواهند كرد.18اما در آن زمان هم باز شما را به کلی از ميان نخواهم برد.19«پس اگر از تو ای ارميا بپرسند: چرا خداوند ما را دچار اين بلايا میكند؟ در پاسخ بگو: همانطور كه شما خدا را فراموش كرديد و در سرزمين خود خدايان بيگانه را پرستيديد، به همان ترتيب بيگانگان را در سرزمينی كه از آن شما نيست خدمت و بردگی خواهيد كرد.»20خداوند میفرمايد كه به اهالی يهودا و به قوم اسرائيل چنين اعلام نماييد:21«ای قوم نادان و بیفهم كه چشم داريد، ولی نمیبينيد؛ گوش داريد، ولی نمیشنويد، اين را بشنويد:22آيا نبايد به من احترام بگذاريد؟ آيا نبايد در حضور من، ترس وجودتان را فرا گيرد؟ من كه شن را به عنوان قانونی جاودانی، حد درياها قرار دادم؛ اگرچه درياها خروش برآورند و امواجشان به تلاطم آيند، از اين حد نمیتوانند بگذرند!»23خداوند میفرمايد: «قوم من دلی سركش و طغيانگر دارند. ايشان ياغی شده و مرا ترک گفتهاند، و هيچگاه حرمت مرا نگه نداشتهاند، هر چند من باران را در بهار و پاييز به ايشان عطا كردم، و فصل كشت و برداشت محصول را برای آنان تعيين نمودم.25برای همين است كه اين بركات نيكو را از ايشان گرفتهام؛ گناه، ايشان را از تمام اين بخششها محروم كرده است.26«در ميان قوم من اشخاص بدكاری وجود دارند كه همچون شكارچيانی كه برای شكار كمين میگذارند، ايشان هم برای انسان دام میگذارند.27همانطور كه شكارچی قفس خود را پر از پرنده میكند، ايشان نيز خانههای خود را از نقشههای فريبكارانه و غارتگرانه پركردهاند، به همين دليل است كه اكنون قدرتمند و ثروتمند هستند.28خوب میخورند و خوب میپوشند و رفتار بدشان حد و اندازهای ندارد؛ نه به داد يتيمان میرسند و نه حق فقيران را به آنها میدهند.29بنابراين من ايشان را مجازات خواهم كرد و از چنين قومی انتقام خواهم گرفت!30«اتفاق عجيب و هولناكی در اين سرزمين روی داده است:31انبیا پيامهای دروغين میدهند و كاهنان نيز بنا بر گفتهٔ ايشان عمل مینمايند، قوم من هم از اين وضع راضیاند. اما بدانيد كه چيزی به نابودی شما نمانده است؛ آنگاه چه خواهيد كرد؟»
