1Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehukal* son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said,2‘This is what the Lord says: “Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague, but whoever goes over to the Babylonians* will live. They will escape with their lives; they will live.”3And this is what the Lord says: “This city will certainly be given into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.” ’4Then the officials said to the king, ‘This man should be put to death. He is discouraging the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin.’5‘He is in your hands,’ King Zedekiah answered. ‘The king can do nothing to oppose you.’6So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.7But Ebed-Melek, a Cushite,* an official* in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,8Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him,9‘My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city.’10Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite, ‘Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.’11So Ebed-Melek took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.12Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, ‘Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.’ Jeremiah did so,13and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
Zedekiah questions Jeremiah again
14Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to the third entrance to the temple of the Lord. ‘I am going to ask you something,’ the king said to Jeremiah. ‘Do not hide anything from me.’15Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, ‘If I give you an answer, will you not kill me? Even if I did give you counsel, you would not listen to me.’16But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah: ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who has given us breath, I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who want to kill you.’17Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, ‘This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “If you surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live.18But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians and they will burn it down; you yourself will not escape from them.” ’19King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, ‘I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me over to them and they will ill-treat me.’20‘They will not hand you over,’ Jeremiah replied. ‘Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared.21But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the Lord has revealed to me:22all the women left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. Those women will say to you: ‘ “They misled you and overcame you – those trusted friends of yours. Your feet are sunk in the mud; your friends have deserted you.”23‘All your wives and children will be brought out to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape from their hands but will be captured by the king of Babylon; and this city will* be burned down.’24Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, ‘Do not let anyone know about this conversation, or you may die.25If the officials hear that I talked with you, and they come to you and say, “Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us or we will kill you,”26then tell them, “I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan’s house to die there.” ’27All the officials did come to Jeremiah and question him, and he told them everything the king had ordered him to say. So they said no more to him, for no-one had heard his conversation with the king.
The fall of Jerusalem
28And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured. This is how Jerusalem was taken:

1اما شفطيا (پسر متان)، جدليا (پسر فشحور)، يوكل (پسر شلميا) و فشحور (پسر ملكيا) شنيدند كه من به مردم چنين میگفتم:2«هر كه در شهر بماند با شمشير و قحط و بيماری خواهد مرد، ولی هر كه تسليم بابلیها شود، زنده خواهد ماند.3خداوند فرموده كه پادشاه بابل حتماً اورشليم را تصرف خواهد كرد!»4پس آنها با شنيدن اين سخنان، نزد پادشاه رفتند و گفتند: «استدعا میكنيم كه دستور بفرمايی اين شخص را اعدام كنند، چون سخنانش روحيهٔ مردم و اين چند سرباز باقی مانده را تضعيف میكند. او يک خائن است.»5صدقيای پادشاه موافقت كرد و گفت: «بسيار خوب، هر طور صلاح میدانيد، عمل كنيد. من نمیتوانم برخلاف ميل شما كاری بكنم!»6پس آنها مرا از زندان بيرون آوردند و با طناب به داخل چاهی كه متعلق به شاهزاده ملكيا بود، پايين فرستادند. آن چاه آب نداشت، ولی ته آن پر از گل و لای بود، و من در گل فرو رفتم.7عبدملک حبشی كه خواجه سرا و از مقامات مهم دربار بود، شنيد كه مرا به سياهچال انداختهاند. پس با عجله خود را به دروازهٔ بنيامين رساند، و به پادشاه كه در آنجا مردم را به حضور میپذيرفت گفت:9«ای سرور من، افراد تو كار ظالمانهای كردهاند كه ارميا را در چاه انداختهاند. او در آنجا از گرسنگی خواهد مرد، چون در شهر يک تكه نان هم پيدا نمیشود.»10پس پادشاه به عبدملک دستور داد كه سی نفر را با خود ببرد و مرا پيش از آنكه بميرم از چاه بيرون بياورد.11عبدملک بلافاصله همراه با اين افراد به انبار كاخ رفت و از آنجا مقداری پارچه و لباسهای كهنه برداشت. سپس بر سر چاه آمد و آنها را برای من با طناب پايين فرستاد و12به من گفت: «اين پارچهها و لباسهای كهنه را زير بغلت بگذار تا وقتی تو را با طناب بالا میكشيم، اذيت نشوی!» وقتی من حاضر شدم،13مرا بيرون كشيدند و به زندان قصر پادشاه بازگرداندند تا همانجا بمانم.
گفتگوی مخفيانه صدقيا با ارميا
14پس از مدتی، صدقيای پادشاه، به دنبال من فرستاد و مرا در محل دروازهٔ سوم خانه خدا به حضور خود آورد و به من گفت: «از تو سؤالی دارم و میخواهم حقيقت را هر چه كه هست، به من بگويی!»15گفتم: «اگر حقيقت را بگويم، مرا خواهی كشت و اگر تو را راهنمايی و نصيحت كنم، گوش نخواهی كرد.»16پس صدقيای پادشاه در نهان برای من قسم خورد و گفت: «به خداوند زنده كه به ما حيات بخشيده، سوگند كه تو را نخواهم كشت و به دست كسانی كه تشنهٔ خونت هستند، نخواهم سپرد!»17آنگاه به صدقيا گفتم: «خداوند، خدای قادر متعال، خدای اسرائيل فرموده كه اگر تسليم پادشاه بابل شوی، تو و خانوادهات زنده خواهيد ماند و اين شهر هم به آتش كشيده نخواهد شد؛18ولی اگر تسليم نشوی، بابلیها اين شهر را تصرف كرده، به آتش خواهند كشيد و تو نيز گرفتار خواهی شد!»19پادشاه گفت: «من میترسم تسليم شوم، چون ممكن است بابلیها مرا به دست يهوديان طرفدار خود، بسپارند. آنگاه معلوم نيست چه بلايی بر سرم خواهند آورد.»20جواب دادم: «يقين بدان كه تو را به آنها نخواهند سپرد. استدعا میكنم كه از كلام خداوند اطاعت نمايی. اين به نفع توست، چون كشته نخواهی شد.21اما اگر نخواهی تسليم شوی، خداوند در رؤيا به من نشان داد22كه تمام زنانی كه در كاخ سلطنتی باقی ماندهاند، به دست فرماندهان سپاه بابل خواهند افتاد. هنگامی كه ايشان از كاخ بيرون برده میشوند، خواهند گفت: ”دوستان نزديک پادشاه به او خيانت كردهاند و در سختیها او را به حال خود رها نمودهاند!“23تمام زنان و فرزندانت به دست بابلیها خواهند افتاد و خود نيز موفق به فرار نخواهی شد و در چنگ پادشاه بابل گرفتار خواهی گشت و اين شهر در آتش خواهد سوخت!»24صدقيا گفت: «مواظب باش كسی از گفتگوی ما اطلاع پيدا نكند تا خطری متوجه جانت نباشد!25هنگامی كه درباريان باخبر شوند كه با تو صحبت كردهام، تو را به مرگ تهديد خواهند نمود تا از موضوع گفتگوی ما آگاهی يابند؛26ولی به ايشان فقط بگو كه به پادشاه التماس كردم كه مرا به سياهچال خانهٔ يوناتان باز نگرداند، چون در آنجا خواهم مرد!»27همانطور هم شد. طولی نكشيد كه تمام بزرگان، نزد من آمدند و پرسيدند كه با پادشاه چه گفتگويی داشتهام. من نيز همانگونه كه پادشاه گفته بود، به آنها جواب دادم. ايشان هم نتوانستند كار ديگری بكنند، زيرا كسی سخنان من و پادشاه را نشنيده بود.28به اين ترتيب تا روزی كه اورشليم به دست بابلیها افتاد، در زندان قصر پادشاه ماندم.
