1Joseph went and told Pharaoh, ‘My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen.’2He chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.3Pharaoh asked the brothers, ‘What is your occupation?’ ‘Your servants are shepherds,’ they replied to Pharaoh, ‘just as our fathers were.’4They also said to him, ‘We have come to live here for a while, because the famine is severe in Canaan and your servants’ flocks have no pasture. So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.’5Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Your father and your brothers have come to you,6and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock.’7Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed* Pharaoh,8Pharaoh asked him, ‘How old are you?’9And Jacob said to Pharaoh, ‘The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty. My years have been few and difficult, and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers.’10Then Jacob blessed* Pharaoh and went out from his presence.11So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed.12Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to the number of their children.
Joseph and the famine
13There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.14Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying, and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace.15When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, ‘Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? Our money is all gone.’16‘Then bring your livestock,’ said Joseph. ‘I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.’17So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.18When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, ‘We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land.19Why should we perish before your eyes – we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.’20So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them. The land became Pharaoh’s,21and Joseph reduced the people to servitude,* from one end of Egypt to the other.22However, he did not buy the land of the priests, because they received a fixed allowance from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allowance Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.23Joseph said to the people, ‘Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you can plant the ground.24But when the crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children.’25‘You have saved our lives,’ they said. ‘May we find favour in the eyes of our lord; we will be in bondage to Pharaoh.’26So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt – still in force today – that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh’s.27Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.28Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.29When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt,30but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.’ ‘I will do as you say,’ he said.31‘Swear to me,’ he said. Then Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshipped as he leaned on the top of his staff.*

1يوسف به حضور فرعون رفت و به او خبر داد و گفت: «پدرم و برادرانم با گلهها و رمهها و هر آنچه كه داشتهاند از كنعان به اينجا آمدهاند، و الان در جوشن هستند.»2او پنج نفر از برادرانش را که با خود آورده بود، به فرعون معرفی كرد.3فرعون از آنها پرسيد: «شغل شما چيست؟» گفتند: «ما هم مثل اجدادمان چوپان هستيم.4آمدهايم در مصر زندگی كنيم، زيرا در كنعان به علت قحطی شديد برای گلههای ما چراگاهی نيست. التماس میكنيم به ما اجازه دهيد در جوشن ساكن شويم.»5فرعون به يوسف گفت: «حال كه پدرت و برادرانت به اينجا آمدهاند، هر جايی را كه میخواهی به آنها بده. بگذار در جوشن كه بهترين ناحيهٔ مصر است ساكن شوند. اگر افراد شايستهای بين آنها هست، آنها را بر گلههای من نيز بگمار.»7سپس يوسف، پدرش يعقوب را نزد فرعون آورد، و يعقوب فرعون را بركت داد.8فرعون از يعقوب پرسيد: «چند سال از عمرت میگذرد؟»9يعقوب جواب داد: «صد و سی سال دارم و سالهای عمرم را در غربت گذراندهام. عمرم كوتاه و پر از رنج بوده است و به سالهای عمر اجدادم كه در غربت میزيستند، نمیرسد.»10يعقوب پيش از رفتن، بار ديگر فرعون را بركت داد.11آنگاه يوسف چنانكه فرعون دستور داده بود بهترين ناحيهٔ مصر، يعنی ناحيهٔ رعمسيس را برای پدر و برادرانش تعيين كرد و آنها را در آنجا مستقر نمود،12و يوسف برحسب تعدادشان خوراک كافی در اختيار آنها گذاشت.
قحطی
13قحطی روزبهروز شدت میگرفت به طوری كه همه مردم مصر و كنعان گرسنگی میكشيدند.14يوسف تمام پولهای مردم مصر و كنعان را در مقابل غلههايی كه خريده بودند، جمع كرد و در خزانههای فرعون ريخت.15وقتی پولِ مردم تمام شد، نزد يوسف آمده، گفتند: «ديگر پولی نداريم كه به عوض غله بدهيم. به ما خوراک بده. نگذار از گرسنگی بميريم.»16يوسف در جواب ايشان گفت: «اگر پول شما تمام شده، چارپايان خود را به من بدهيد تا در مقابل، به شما غله بدهم.»17آنها چارهای نداشتند جز اين كه چهار پايان خود را به يوسف بدهند تا به ايشان نان بدهد. به اين ترتيب در عرض يک سال، تمام اسبها و الاغها و گلهها و رمههای مصر از آنِ فرعون گرديد.18سال بعد، آنها بار ديگر نزد يوسف آمده، گفتند: «ای سَروَر ما، پول ما تمام شده و تمامی گلهها و رمههای ما نيز از آن تو شده است. ديگر چيزی برای ما باقی نمانده جز خودمان و زمينهايمان.19نگذار از گرسنگی بميريم؛ نگذار زمينهايمان از بين بروند. ما و زمينهايمان را بخر و ما با زمينهايمان مالِ فرعون خواهيم شد. به ما غذا بده تا زنده بمانيم و بذر بده تا زمينها باير نمانند.»20پس يوسف تمامی زمين مصر را برای فرعون خريد. مصريان زمينهای خود را به او فروختند، زيرا قحطی بسيار شديد بود.21به اين طريق مردمِ سراسر مصر غلامان فرعون شدند.22تنها زمينی كه يوسف نخريد، زمين كاهنان بود، زيرا فرعون خوراک آنها را به آنها میداد و نيازی به فروش زمين خود نداشتند.23آنگاه يوسف به مردم مصر گفت: «من شما و زمينهای شما را برای فرعون خريدهام. حالا به شما بذر میدهم تا رفته در زمينها بكاريد.24موقع برداشت محصول، يک پنجم آن را به فرعون بدهيد و بقيه را برای كشت سال بعد و خوراک خود و خانوادههايتان نگاه داريد.»25آنها گفتند: «تو در حق ما خوبی كردهای و جان ما را نجات دادهای، بنابراين غلامان فرعون خواهيم بود.»26پس يوسف در تمامی سرزمين مصر مقرر نمود كه از آن به بعد، هر ساله يک پنجم از تمامی محصول به عنوان ماليات به فرعون داده شود. محصول زمينهای كاهنان مشمول اين قانون نبود. اين قانون هنوز هم به قوت خود باقی است.27پس بنیاسرائيل در سرزمين مصر در ناحيهٔ جوشن ساكن شدند و بر تعداد و ثروت آنها پيوسته افزوده میشد.28يعقوب بعد از رفتن به مصر، هفده سال ديگر زندگی كرد و در سن صد و چهل و هفت سالگی درگذشت.29او در روزهای آخر عمرش، يوسف را نزد خود خواند و به او گفت: «دستت را زير ران من بگذار و سوگند ياد كن كه مرا در مصر دفن نكنی.30بعد از مردنم جسد مرا از سرزمين مصر برده، در كنار اجدادم دفن كن.» يوسف به او قول داد كه اين كار را بكند.31يعقوب گفت: «برايم قسم بخور كه اين كار را خواهی كرد.» وقتی يوسف برايش قسم خورد، يعقوب خدا را شكر كرد و با خيال راحت در بسترش دراز كشيد.
