1Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.2The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.3When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,4Joseph found favour in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.5From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.6So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,7and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, ‘Come to bed with me!’8But he refused. ‘With me in charge,’ he told her, ‘my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.9No-one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?’10And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even to be with her.11One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside.12She caught him by his cloak and said, ‘Come to bed with me!’ But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.13When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,14she called her household servants. ‘Look,’ she said to them, ‘this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.15When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.’16She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home.17Then she told him this story: ‘That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me.18But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.’19When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, ‘This is how your slave treated me,’ he burned with anger.20Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison,21the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favour in the eyes of the prison warder.22So the warder put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.23The warder paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

1و اما يوسف به دست تاجران اسماعيلی به مصر برده شد. فوطيفار كه يكی از افسران فرعون و رئيس محافظان دربار بود، او را از ايشان خريد.2خداوند يوسف را در خانهٔ اربابش بسيار بركت میداد، به طوری كه آنچه يوسف میكرد موفقيت آميز بود.3فوطيفار متوجه اين موضوع شده و دريافته بود كه خداوند با يوسف میباشد.4از اين رو يوسف مورد لطف اربابش قرار گرفت. طولی نكشيد كه فوطيفار وی را بر خانه و كليه امور تجاری خود ناظر ساخت.5خداوند فوطيفار را به خاطر يوسف بركت داد چنانكه تمام امور خانهٔ او به خوبی پيش میرفت و محصولاتش فراوان و گلههايش زياد میشد.6پس فوطيفار مسئوليت ادارهٔ تمام اموال خود را به دست يوسف سپرد و ديگر او برای هيچ چيز فكر نمیكرد جز اين كه چه غذايی بخورد. يوسف جوانی خوشاندام و خوشقيافه بود.7پس از چندی، نظر همسر فوطيفار به يوسف جلب شد و به او پيشنهاد كرد كه با وی همبستر شود.8اما يوسف نپذيرفت و گفت: «اربابم آنقدر به من اعتماد دارد كه هر آنچه در اين خانه است به من سپرده9و تمام اختيار اين خانه را به من داده است. او چيزی را از من مضايقه نكرده جز تو را كه همسر او هستی. پس چگونه مرتكب چنين عمل زشتی بشوم؟ اين عمل، گناهی است نسبت به خدا.»10اما او دست بردار نبود و هر روز از يوسف میخواست كه با وی همبستر شود. ولی يوسف به سخنان فريبنده او گوش نمیداد و تا آنجا كه امكان داشت از وی دوری میكرد.11روزی يوسف طبق معمول به كارهای منزل رسيدگی میكرد. آن روز شخص ديگری هم در خانه نبود.12پس آن زن چنگ به لباس او انداخته، گفت: «با من بخواب.» ولی يوسف از چنگ او گريخت و از منزل خارج شد، اما لباسش در دست وی باقی ماند.13آن زن چون وضع را چنين ديد،14با صدای بلند فرياد زده، خدمتكاران را به كمک طلبيد و به آنها گفت: «شوهرم اين غلام عبرانی را به خانه آورد، حالا او ما را رسوا میسازد! او به اتاقم آمد تا به من تجاوز كند، ولی چون مقاومت كردم و فرياد زدم، فرار كرد و لباس خود را جا گذاشت.»16پس آن زن لباس را نزد خود نگاه داشت و وقتی شوهرش به منزل آمد17داستانی را كه ساخته بود، برايش چنين تعريف كرد: «آن غلامِ عبرانی كه به خانه آوردهای میخواست به من تجاوز كند،18ولی من با داد و فرياد، خود را از دستش نجات دادم. او گريخت، ولی لباسش را جا گذاشت.»19فوطيفار چون سخنان زنش را شنيد، بسيار خشمگين شد20و يوسف را به زندانی كه ساير زندانيان پادشاه در آن در زنجير بودند انداخت.21اما در آنجا هم خداوند با يوسف بود و او را بركت میداد و وی را مورد لطف رئيس زندان قرار داد.22طولی نكشيد كه رئيس زندان، يوسف را مسئول ادارهٔ زندان نمود، به طوری كه همهٔ زندانيان زير نظر او بودند.23رئيس زندان در مورد كارهايی كه به يوسف سپرده بود نگرانی نداشت، زيرا خداوند با يوسف بود و او را در انجام كارهايش موفق میساخت.
