The church persecuted and scattered

1 And Saul approved of their killing him. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.

Philip in Samaria

4 Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralysed or lame were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city.

Simon the sorcerer

9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practised sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, ‘This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.’ 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. 12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised, both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptised. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw. 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, ‘Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.’ 20 Peter answered: ‘May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.’ 24 Then Simon answered, ‘Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.’ 25 After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.

Philip and the Ethiopian

26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, ‘Go south to the road – the desert road – that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian* eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told Philip, ‘Go to that chariot and stay near it.’ 30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ Philip asked. 31 ‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone explains it to me?’ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading: ‘He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.’* 34 The eunuch asked Philip, ‘Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?’ 35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they travelled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, ‘Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptised?’* 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptised him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and travelled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

1 پولُس با كشته شدن استيفان موافق بود. از آن روز به بعد، شكنجه و آزار ايمانداران كليسای اورشليم شروع شد. به طوری كه همه به يهوديه و سامره فرار كردند. فقط رسولان در اورشليم باقی ماندند. 2 ولی چند يهودی خداشناس جمع شدند و جنازهٔ استيفان را به خاک سپردند. ايشان از اين پيشآمد بسيار اندوهگين بودند. 3 اما پولس همه جا میرفت و ايمانداران به مسيح را شكنجه میداد. او وارد خانههای مردم میشد و مردان و زنان را به زور بيرون میكشيد و به زندان میانداخت.

فيليپ در سامره بشارت میدهد

4 ولی ايماندارانی كه از اورشليم گريخته بودند به هر جا میرفتند پيغام عيسی را به مردم میرساندند. 5 فيليپ نيز به شهر سامره رفت و پيغام عيسی را در آنجا اعلام نمود. 6 مردم، به خاطر معجزات او، به دقت به سخنان او گوش میدادند. 7 ارواح ناپاک نيز با فريادهای بلند از وجود ديوانگان بيرون میآمدند، و مفلوجان و لنگان شفا میيافتند. 8 از اين جهت، آن شهر غرق در شادی شد! 9 در ضمن در سامره مردی بود به نام شمعون كه سالهای سال جادوگری میكرد. او در اثر چشمبندیهایش بسيار بانفوذ و مغرور شده بود، تا جايی كه اهالی سامره اغلب از او به عنوان«مرد بزرگ» و«قدرت خدا» ياد میكردند. 12 اما وقتی مردم به پيغام فيليپ دربارهٔ ملكوت خدا و عيسی مسيح ايمان آوردند، هم مردان و هم زنان غسل تعميد گرفتند. 13 سپس شمعون نيز ايمان آورده، غسل تعميد گرفت. او از فيليپ جدا نمیشد و از معجزات او مات و مبهوت میماند. 14 وقتی رسولان در اورشليم شنيدند كه اهالی سامره پيغام خدا را قبول كردهاند، پطرس و يوحنا را به آنجا فرستادند. 15 وقتی ايشان به سامره رسيدند، برای نوايمانان دعا كردند تا روحالقدس را بيابند، 16 زيرا ايشان فقط به نام عيسای خداوند تعميد گرفته بودند و هنوز روحالقدس بر هيچيک از ايشان نازل نشده بود. 17 پس پطرس و يوحنا دستهای خود را بر سر اين نوايمانان گذاشتند و ايشان نيز روحالقدس را يافتند. 18 وقتی شمعون ديد كه با قرار گرفتن دستهای رسولان بر سر مردم، روحالقدس عطا میشود، مبلغی پول نزد پطرس و يوحنا آورد تا اين قدرت را بخرد. 19 او گفت: «به من نيز اين قدرت را بدهيد تا هر وقت دست بر سر كسی میگذارم، روحالقدس را بيابد!» 20 اما پطرس جواب داد: «پولت با تو نابود باد! گمان میكنی هديهٔ خدا را میتوان با پول خريد! 21 تو از اين نعمت بینصيب هستی، چون دلت نزد خدا پاک نيست. 22 از اين شرارت دست بردار و دعا كن تا شايد خدا اين افكار ناپاكت را ببخشد. 23 زيرا میبينم كه حسادت و گناه، دلت را سياه كرده است!» 24 شمعون با التماس گفت: «برای من دعا كنيد تا بلايی بر سرم نيايد!» 25 پطرس و يوحنا آنچه خدا در زندگی آنان كرده بود، برای ايمانداران سامره تعريف كردند و كلام خداوند را به آنان تعليم دادند. آنگاه به اورشليم بازگشتند. سر راهشان به چند روستا نيز سر زدند و پيغام خدا را به اهالی آنجا نيز بشارت دادند.

فيليپ و خزانهدار حبشه

26 پس از اين واقعه، فرشتهٔ خداوند به فيليپ گفت: «برخيز و رو به جنوب به راهی برو كه از اورشليم به بيابان غزه میرود.» 27 پس فيليپ به طرف آن جاده به راه افتاد. وقتی به آنجا رسيد به خزانهدار مملكت حبشه برخورد كه در دربار«كنداكه»، ملكهٔ حبشه، نفوذ و قدرت فراوانی داشت. او برای زيارت خانهٔ خدا به اورشليم رفته بود، 28 و حالا با كالسكه به وطن خود باز میگشت. در ضمن كتاب اشعيای نبی را با صدای بلند میخواند. 29 روح خدا به فيليپ گفت: «تندتر برو تا به كالسكه برسی.» 30 فيليپ جلو دويد و شنيد كه چه میخواند. پس پرسيد: «آيا میفهميد چه نوشته است؟» 31 مرد حبشی جواب داد: «نه، وقتی كسی نيست به من بياموزد، چگونه بفهمم؟» پس، از فيليپ خواهش كرد كه سوار كالسكه شود و كنار او بنشيند. 32 آن قسمتی كه از كتاب آسمانی میخواند، اين بود: «همچنانكه گوسفند را به سوی كشتارگاه میبرند، او را نيز به كشتارگاه بردند. او مثل گوسفندی كه پشمهايش را میچينند، لب به اعتراض نگشود. 33 او فروتن بود؛ از این رو هرگونه بیعدالتی در حق او روا داشتند. چه كسی میتواند از نسل او سخن بگويد؟ زيرا حيات او از زمين برداشته شد.» 34 خزانهدار حبشی از فيليپ پرسيد: «آيا اشعيا اين چيزها را دربارهٔ خودش میگفت يا دربارهٔ ديگری؟» 35 آنگاه فيليپ از آن نوشتهٔ آسمانی شروع كرد و با استفاده از قسمتهای ديگر كتاب آسمانی، پيام نجاتبخش عيسی را به او رسانيد. 36 همچنانكه كالسكه پيش میرفت، به يک بركهٔ آب رسيدند. مرد حبشی گفت: «نگاه كن! اين هم آب! آيا امكان دارد حالا غسل تعميد بگيرم؟» 37 فيليپ جواب داد: «اگر با تمام وجودت ايمان آوردهای، امكان دارد.» جواب داد: «من ايمان دارم كه عيسی مسيح، فرزند خداست.» 38 پس كالسكه را نگاه داشتند و هر دو داخل آب رفتند و فيليپ او را تعميد داد. 39 وقتی از آب بيرون آمدند، روح خداوند فيليپ را برداشت و برد و خزانهدار حبشی ديگر او را نديد، ولی راه خود را با خوشحالی پيش گرفت و رفت. 40 اما فيليپ خود را در شهر اشدود يافت. پس هم در آنجا و هم در شهرهای سر راه خود، پيغام خدا را به مردم رساند تا به شهر قيصريه رسيد.
