1Five days later the high priest Ananias went down to Caesarea with some of the elders and a lawyer named Tertullus, and they brought their charges against Paul before the governor.2When Paul was called in, Tertullus presented his case before Felix: ‘We have enjoyed a long period of peace under you, and your foresight has brought about reforms in this nation.3Everywhere and in every way, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with profound gratitude.4But in order not to weary you further, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly.5‘We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect6and even tried to desecrate the temple; so we seized him.*8By examining him yourself you will be able to learn the truth about all these charges we are bringing against him.’9The other Jews joined in the accusation, asserting that these things were true.10When the governor motioned for him to speak, Paul replied: ‘I know that for a number of years you have been a judge over this nation; so I gladly make my defence.11You can easily verify that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship.12My accusers did not find me arguing with anyone at the temple, or stirring up a crowd in the synagogues or anywhere else in the city.13And they cannot prove to you the charges they are now making against me.14However, I admit that I worship the God of our ancestors as a follower of the Way, which they call a sect. I believe everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets,15and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.16So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.17‘After an absence of several years, I came to Jerusalem to bring my people gifts for the poor and to present offerings.18I was ceremonially clean when they found me in the temple courts doing this. There was no crowd with me, nor was I involved in any disturbance.19But there are some Jews from the province of Asia, who ought to be here before you and bring charges if they have anything against me.20Or these who are here should state what crime they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin –21unless it was this one thing I shouted as I stood in their presence: “It is concerning the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today.” ’22Then Felix, who was well acquainted with the Way, adjourned the proceedings. ‘When Lysias the commander comes,’ he said, ‘I will decide your case.’23He ordered the centurion to keep Paul under guard but to give him some freedom and permit his friends to take care of his needs.24Several days later Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish. He sent for Paul and listened to him as he spoke about faith in Christ Jesus.25As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, ‘That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.’26At the same time he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him.27When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, but because Felix wanted to grant a favour to the Jews, he left Paul in prison.

1پنج روز بعد، حنانيا كاهن اعظم با عدهای از سران يهود و يک وكيل دعاوی به قيصريه آمد تا شكايت خود را از پولس تقديم دادگاه كند. نام وكيل ترتولس بود.2پس، دادگاه پولس را احضار كرد. وقتی او حاضر شد ترتولس شكايت خود را به اين شرح آغاز كرد: «عاليجناب فرماندار، شما برای ما يهوديان صلح و آرامش آوردهايد و جلو تبعيض و طرفداری را گرفتهايد.3به اين جهت از شما بیاندازه سپاسگزاريم.4برای اينكه سر شما را درد نياورم، اجازه میخواهم به طور خلاصه اتهامات اين متهم را به عرض برسانم.5او شخصی فتنهانگيز است كه دائم يهوديان را در سرتاسر جهان به شورش و ياغيگری بر ضد دولت روم تحريک میكند؛ و سردستهٔ فرقهای است به نام ”ناصریها“.6ما زمانی او را گرفتيم كه در صدد بود خانهٔ خدا را نجس سازد. «میخواستيم او را عادلانه به سزای اعمالش برسانيم،7ولی ليسياس، فرماندهٔ هنگ آمد و به زور او را از چنگ ما خارج ساخت،8و اصرار داشت كه او طبق قانون روم محاكمه شود. خود شما میتوانيد از او بازجويی كنيد تا به صحت اين اتهامات پی ببريد.»9بقيه يهوديان نيز گفتههای او را تصديق كردند.10سپس نوبت به پولس رسيد. فرماندار به او اشاره كرد تا برخيزد و از خود دفاع كند. پولس گفت: «جناب فرماندار، میدانم كه سالهای سال است كه شما در مقام قضاوت، به مسائل يهود رسيدگی میكنيد. اين امر به من قوت قلب میدهد تا آزادانه از خود دفاع كنم.11شما خيلی سريع میتوانيد تحقيق كنيد و پی ببريد كه من فقط دوازده روز پيش وارد اورشليم شدم تا در خانهٔ خدا عبادت كنم.12آنگاه معلوم خواهد شد كه من هرگز نه در خانهٔ خدا آشوب به راه انداختهام و نه در كنيسه و نه در شهر،13و مطمئن هستم كه نمیتوانند تهمتهايی را كه به من میزنند، ثابت كنند.14«ولی به يک مورد اعتراف میكنم. من به راه نجات كه به قول ايشان يک فرقه است ايمان دارم. من مثل اجدادم خدا را خدمت میكنم و به شريعت يهود و نوشتههای پيغمبران ايمان دارم.15«مثل خود اين آقايان ايمان دارم كه هم برای نيكان و هم برای بدان روز قيامت در پيش است.16به همين دليل با تمام توانايیام سعی میكنم در حضور خدا و انسان با وجدانی پاک زندگی كنم.17«من پس از سالها دوری با مقداری پول برای كمک به قومم و انجام مراسم قربانی به اورشليم بازگشتم.18اشخاصی كه از من شكايت دارند، مرا در خانهٔ خدا ديدند، آن هم در حالی که تشكرات قلبی خود را به حضور خدا تقديم میكردم و به رسم ايشان سرم را تراشيده بودم. نه دارودستهای دور من بود و نه جار و جنجالی! ولی چند نفر از يهوديان آسيا مرا آنجا ديدند.19اگر آنان نيز از من شكايتی دارند، بايد اينجا حاضر شوند.20حال، از اين آقايانی كه اينجا هستند بپرسيد كه شورای ايشان، چه خطايی در من ديده است؟21بهجز اينكه با صدای بلند گفتم: علت اينكه در حضور شورا محاكمه میشوم اين است كه به روز قيامت ايمان دارم!»22فليكس كه میدانست مسيحيان، آشوبگر و اهل جنجال نيستند، محاكمه را به تعويق انداخت و به يهوديان گفت: «منتظر باشيد تا ليسياس، فرماندهٔ هنگ بيايد. آنگاه به شكايت شما رسيدگی خواهم كرد.»23سپس، دستور داد پولس را زندانی كنند ولی به نگهبانان سفارش كرد كه با او خوشرفتاری نمايند تا از هر جهت راحت باشد و بگذارند دوستانش به ملاقات او بيايند و احتياجاتش را تأمين كنند.24چند روز بعد فليكس با همسر خود دروسلا كه يهودی بود، به آنجا آمد و پولس را احضار كرد. وقتی پولس دربارهٔ ايمان به عيسی مسيح صحبت میكرد، هر دو با دقت گوش میدادند.25ولی موقعی كه برای آنان در مورد پاكدامنی و پرهيزگاری و داوری الهی موعظه كرد، فليكس وحشت كرد و به پولس گفت: «فعلاً برو، هرگاه وقت كردم، به دنبالت میفرستم.»26در ضمن، فليكس توقع داشت پولس به او رشوه بدهد تا آزادش كند؛ پس وقت و بیوقت دنبال او میفرستاد و با او صحبت میكرد.27دو سال به اين ترتيب گذشت تا اينكه پُركيوس فستوس جانشين فليكس شد. فليكس هم چون میخواست يهوديان از او راضی باشند، پولس را همچنان در زندان نگاه داشت.
