1When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.2As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,3explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. ‘This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,’ he said.4Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.5But other Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the market-place, formed a mob and started a riot in the city. They rushed to Jason’s house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd.*6But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some other believers before the city officials, shouting: ‘These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here,7and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.’8When they heard this, the crowd and the city officials were thrown into turmoil.9Then they put Jason and the others on bail and let them go.
In Berea
10As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.11Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.12As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.13But when the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea, some of them went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up.14The believers immediately sent Paul to the coast, but Silas and Timothy stayed at Berea.15Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.
In Athens
16While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols.17So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the market-place day by day with those who happened to be there.18A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, ‘What is this babbler trying to say?’ Others remarked, ‘He seems to be advocating foreign gods.’ They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.19Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, ‘May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?20You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.’21(All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.)22Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: ‘People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.23For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: To an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship – and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.24‘The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.25And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.26From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.27God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.28“For in him we live and move and have our being.”* As some of your own poets have said, “We are his offspring.”*29‘Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone – an image made by human design and skill.30In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.31For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.’32When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, ‘We want to hear you again on this subject.’33At that, Paul left the Council.34Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.

پولس و سيلاس در بيريه
10همان شب مسيحيان با عجله پولس و سيلاس را به بيريه فرستادند. در آنجا باز طبق معمول به عبادتگاه يهود رفتند تا پيغام انجيل را اعلام نمايند.11ولی اهالی بيريه از مردم تسالونيكی نجيبتر بودند و با اشتياق به پيغام آنان گوش میدادند و هر روز كتاب آسمانی را با دقت میخواندند تا ببينند گفتههای پولس و سيلاس مطابق كلام خدا هست يا نه.12به اين ترتيب، عدهٔ زيادی از يهوديان و گروهی از زنان سرشناس يونانی و جمع بزرگی از مردان يونانی ايمان آوردند.13اما وقتی يهوديان تسالونيكی باخبر شدند كه پولس در بيريه موعظه میكند، به آنجا رفتند و در آنجا نيز آشوبی بر پا كردند.14مسيحيان بیدرنگ پولس را به سوی دريا فرستادند، ولی سيلاس و تيموتائوس همانجا ماندند.15همراهان پولس تا شهر آتن با او رفتند و از آنجا به بيريه بازگشتند و از طرف پولس برای سيلاس و تيموتائوس پيغام آوردند كه هر چه زودتر به آتن بروند.
پولس برای مردم آتن موعظه میكند
16وقتی پولس در آتن منتظر سيلاس و تيموتائوس بود، از آن همه بت كه در شهر بود، به شدت ناراحت شد.17پس برای گفتگو با يهوديان و غيريهوديان ديندار، به عبادتگاه يهود میرفت و هر روز در بازار هر كه را میديد با وی گفتگو میكرد.18در ضمن، با چند فيلسوف«اپيكوری» و«رواقی» نيز آشنا شد. وقتی پيام نجاتبخش مسيح و زنده شدن او را با آنان در میان گذاشت، گفتند: «اين ياوهگو چه میخواهد بگويد؟» بعضی نيز گفتند: «میخواهد يكی از مذاهب بيگانه را به ما تحميل كند.»19پس او را به تالار اجتماعات شهر دعوت كردند كه بالای تپهای به نام«مريخ» بود و گفتند: «بيا دربارهٔ اين مذهب تازه بيشتر برای ما صحبت كن.20چون چيزهايی كه تو میگويی برای ما تازگی دارد و میخواهيم بيشتر بشنويم.»21تمام اهالی آتن و حتی خارجيان آنجا گويی كاری نداشتند بهجز اينكه دور هم جمع شوند و تمام وقت خود را صرف گفتگو دربارهٔ عقايد تازه كنند.22پس پولس در تالار اجتماعات تپهٔ مريخ در مقابل مردم ايستاد و گفت: «ای اهالی آتن، میبينم كه شما بسيار مذهبی هستيد،23چون وقتی در شهر گردش میكردم، بسياری از قربانگاههای شما را ديدم. در ضمن، روی يكی از آنها نوشته شده بود ”تقديم به خدايی كه هنوز شناخته نشده است.“ معلوم میشود شما مدتهاست او را میپرستيد، بیآنكه بدانيد كيست. اكنون میخواهم با شما دربارهٔ او سخن بگويم.24«او همان كسی است كه اين دنيا و هر چه را كه در آن هست آفريده است. چون او خود، صاحب آسمان و زمين است، در اين بتخانهها كه به دست انسان ساخته شدهاند، ساكن نمیشود،25و احتياج به دسترنج ما ندارد، چون بینياز است! زيرا خود او به همه نَفَس و حيات میبخشد، و هر نياز انسان را رفع میكند.26او تمام مردم دنيا را از يكنفر بوجود آورد، يعنی از آدم، و قومها را در سرتاسر اين زمين پراكنده ساخت؛ او زمان به قدرت رسيدن و سقوط هر يک از قومهای جهان و مرزهای آنها را از پيش تعيين كرد.27«مقصود از تمام اين كارها اين است كه مردم در جستجوی خدا باشند تا شايد به او برسند؛ حال آنكه او حتی از قلب ما نيز به ما نزديكتر است.28زيرا زندگی و حركت و هستی از اوست. يكی از شعرای شما نيز گفته است كه ما فرزندان خدا هستيم.29اگر اين درست باشد، پس نبايد خدا را يک بت بدانيم كه انسان آن را از طلا و يا نقره و يا سنگ ساخته است.30اما خدا كارهايی را كه در گذشته از روی نادانی از انسان سر زده، تحمل كرده است. ولی اكنون از همه میخواهد كه بتهايشان را دور ريخته، فقط او را بپرستند.31زيرا روزی را معين فرموده است كه در آن مردم اين دنيا را بوسيلهٔ شخص مورد نظر خود با عدل و انصاف داوری كند. خدا با زنده كردن اين شخص از مردگان، وی را به ما شناسانيده است.»32وقتی شنيدند كه پولس دربارهٔ زنده شدن مرده سخن میگويد، به او خنديدند. اما بعضی نيز گفتند: «میخواهيم در اين باره باز هم برای ما صحبت كنی.»33به هر حال، اين پايان گفتگوی پولس با ايشان بود.34ولی چند نفر او را پيروی كرده، به مسيح ايمان آوردند. از جمله اينها ديونيسيوس عضو انجمن شهر بود و ديگری زنی بود به نام داماريس و چند نفر ديگر.
