1At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.2He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.3One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, ‘Cornelius!’4Cornelius stared at him in fear. ‘What is it, Lord?’ he asked. The angel answered, ‘Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.5Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter.6He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.’7When the angel who spoke to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier who was one of his attendants.8He told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.
Peter’s vision
9About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.10He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.11He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.12It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds.13Then a voice told him, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’14‘Surely not, Lord!’ Peter replied. ‘I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.’15The voice spoke to him a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’16This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.17While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate.18They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.19While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, ‘Simon, three* men are looking for you.20So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.’21Peter went down and said to the men, ‘I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?’22The men replied, ‘We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.’
Peter at Cornelius’ house
23Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along.24The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.25As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence.26But Peter made him get up. ‘Stand up,’ he said, ‘I am only a man myself.’27While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.28He said to them: ‘You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.29So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?’30Cornelius answered: ‘Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me31and said, “Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor.32Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.”33So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.’34Then Peter began to speak: ‘I now realise how true it is that God does not show favouritism35but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.36You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.37You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached –38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.39‘We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,40but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.41He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen – by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.46For they heard them speaking in tongues* and praising God. Then Peter said,47‘Surely no-one can stand in the way of their being baptised with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.’48So he ordered that they be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.

1در شهر قيصريه يک افسر رومی به نام كُرنيليوس زندگی میكرد كه فرماندهٔ هنگی بود معروف به«ايتاليايی».2او شخصی خداپرست و پرهيزگار بود و خانوادهای خداترس داشت. كرنيليوس هميشه با سخاوت به فقرای يهودی كمک میكرد و به درگاه خدا دعا مینمود.3يک روز، ساعت سه بعد از ظهر، در رؤيا فرشتهٔ خدا را ديد. فرشته نزد او آمد و گفت: «كُرنيليوس!»4كرنيليوس با وحشت به او خيره شد و پرسيد: «آقا، چه فرمايشی داريد؟» فرشته جواب داد: «دعاها و نيكوكاريهای تو از نظر خدا دور نمانده است!5اكنون چند نفر به يافا به دنبال شمعون پطرس بفرست تا به ديدن تو بيايد. او در خانهٔ شمعون چرم ساز كه خانهاش در كنار درياست، میهمان است.»7وقتی فرشته ناپديد شد، كرنيليوس دو نفر از نوكران خود را با يک سرباز خداشناس كه محافظ او بود، فرا خواند8و جريان را به ايشان گفت و آنان را به يافا فرستاد.

9روز بعد، وقتی اين افراد به شهر يافا نزديک میشدند، پطرس به پشت بام رفت تا دعا كند. ظهر بود و پطرس گرسنه شد. در همان حال كه خوراک را آماده میكردند، پطرس در عالم رؤيا ديد كه11آسمان باز شد و چيزی شبيه سفرهای بزرگ به طرف زمين آمد كه از چهار گوشه آويزان بود.12در آن سفره، همه نوع حيوان و حشره و پرندهٔ وحشی وجود داشت كه خوردن آنها برای يهوديان حرام بود.13سپس صدايی به پطرس گفت: «برخيز و هر كدام را كه میخواهی، ذبح كن و بخور!»14پطرس گفت: «خداوندا، من هرگز چنين كاری نخواهم كرد! در تمام عمرم هرگز گوشت حرام نخوردهام!»15باز آن صدا گفت: «دستور خدا را رد نكن! اگر خدا چيزی را حلال میخواند، تو آن را حرام نخوان!»16اين رؤيا سه بار تكرار شد. سپس، آن سفره به آسمان بالا رفت.17پطرس گيج شده بود، چون نه معنی اين رؤيا را میدانست و نه میدانست چه بايد بكند. در همين وقت، آن سه نفری كه كرنيليوس فرستاده بود، خانه را پيدا كرده، به دم در رسيده بودند،18و میگفتند: «آيا شمعون معروف به پطرس در اينجا اقامت دارد؟»19در حالی که پطرس دربارهٔ رؤيا فكر میكرد، روحالقدس به او گفت: «سه نفر آمدهاند تو را ببينند.20برخيز و از ايشان استقبال كن و بدون شک و ترديد همراه ايشان برو چون من ايشان را فرستادهام.»21پطرس پايين رفت و به ايشان گفت: «من پطرس هستم. چه فرمايشی داريد؟»22جواب دادند: «ما از جانب كرنيليوس، فرماندهٔ رومی آمدهايم. او شخص نيكوكار و خداترسی است و مورد احترام يهوديان نيز میباشد. فرشتهای نيز به او ظاهر شده و گفته است كه به دنبال شما بفرستد و سخنان شما را بشنود.»23پطرس آنان را به خانه برد و پذيرايی كرد و روز بعد با ايشان به قيصريه رفت. چند نفر از ايمانداران«يافا» نيز با او رفتند.24فردای آن روز به قيصريه رسيدند. كرنيليوس بستگان و دوستان نزديک خود را هم جمع كرده بود و انتظار ايشان را میكشيد.25به محض اينكه پطرس وارد خانه شد، كرنيليوس در مقابل او به خاک افتاد تا او را بپرستد.26اما پطرس گفت: «برخيز! من نيز مانند تو يک انسانم.»27پس برخاسته، گفتگوكنان به اتاقی كه عدهٔ زيادی در آن جمع بودند، رفتند.28پطرس به ايشان گفت: «شما خود میدانيد كه قوانين يهود اجازه نمیدهد كه من به خانهٔ شخصی غيريهودی بيايم. ولی خدا در رؤيا به من نشان داده است كه هرگز نبايد كسی را نجس بدانم.29از اين رو وقتی شما به دنبال من فرستاديد، بیچون و چرا آمدم. حال بفرماييد به چه علت مرا خواستهايد.»30كُرنيليوس جواب داد: «چهار روز پيش، در همين وقت يعنی ساعت سه بعد از ظهر، طبق عادت در خانهٔ خود مشغول دعا بودم كه ناگهان ديدم شخصی با لباس نورانی روبروی من ايستاده است!31او به من گفت: كرنيليوس، خدا دعاهای تو را شنيده است و كمكهای تو را در حق مردم قبول كرده است!32حال چند نفر را به يافا بفرست و شمعون پطرس را دعوت كن تا به اينجا بيايد. او در خانهٔ شمعون دَبّاغ كه خانهاش در ساحل درياست، میهمان است.33«پس بیدرنگ به دنبال شما فرستادم و شما نيز لطف كرده، زود آمديد. اينک منتظريم كه بدانيم خداوند چه فرموده است تا به ما بگوييد.»
غيريهوديان نيز بشارت انجيل را میشنوند
34آنگاه پطرس جواب داد: «حالا میفهمم كه فقط يهوديان محبوب خدا نيستند!35بلكه هر کس از هر نژاد و قومی كه خدا را بپرستد و كارهای نيک بكند، مورد پسند او واقع میشود.36شما يقيناً از آن بشارت و مژدهای كه خدا به قوم اسرائيل داده آگاه میباشيد، يعنی اين مژده كه انسان میتواند بوسيلهٔ عيسی مسيح كه خداوند همه است، به سوی خدا بازگردد. اين پيغام و اين وقايع، با تعميد يحيی آغاز شد، و از جليل به تمام يهوديه رسيد.38و بدون شک میدانيد كه خدا عيسای ناصری را مسيح تعيين كرد و با روحالقدس و قدرت خود به اين دنيا فرستاد. او به همه جا میرفت، كارهای نيک انجام میداد و تمام كسانی را كه اسير ارواح ناپاک بودند شفا میداد، زيرا خدا با او بود.39«و ما رسولان شاهد تمام اعمالی هستيم كه او در سرتاسر اسرائيل و در اورشليم انجام داد و در همان شهر بود كه او را بر صليب كشتند.40ولی سه روز بعد، خدا او را زنده كرد و او را به شاهدانی كه از پيش انتخاب كرده بود، ظاهر فرمود. البته همهٔ مردم او را نديدند، بلكه فقط ما كه بعد از زنده شدنش، با او خورديم و نوشيديم، شاهد اين واقعهٔ عظيم بوديم.42و خدا ما را فرستاد تا اين خبر خوش را به همه بدهيم و بگوييم كه خدا عيسی را تعيين نموده تا داور زندگان و مردگان باشد.43تمام پيامبران نيز در كتاب آسمانی ما نوشتهاند كه هر کس به او ايمان بياورد، گناهانش بخشيده خواهد شد.»
غيريهوديان روحالقدس را دريافت میکنند
44هنوز سخن پطرس تمام نشده بود كه روحالقدس بر تمام شنوندگان نازل شد!45يهوديانی كه همراه پطرس آمده بودند، وقتی ديدند كه روحالقدس به غيريهوديان نيز عطا شده است، مات و مبهوت ماندند.46ولی جای شک باقی نماند، چون میشنيدند كه همه به زبانهای مختلف سخن میگويند و خدا را تمجيد میكنند. آنگاه پطرس گفت: «اكنون كه ايشان مانند ما روحالقدس را يافتهاند، آيا كسی میتواند به من اعتراض كند كه چرا تعميدشان میدهم؟»48پس به نام عيسی مسيح ايشان را غسل تعميد داد. آنگاه كرنيليوس التماس كرد كه پطرس چند روزی نزد آنان بماند.
