1In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach2until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.3After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.5For John baptised with* water, but in a few days you will be baptised with* the Holy Spirit.’6Then they gathered round him and asked him, ‘Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’7He said to them: ‘It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.11‘Men of Galilee,’ they said, ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.’
Matthias chosen to replace Judas
12Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk* from the city.13When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were: Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas son of James.14They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.15In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty)16and said, ‘Brothers and sisters,* the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus.17He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.’18(With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out.19Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)20‘For,’ said Peter, ‘it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘ “May his place be deserted; let there be no-one to dwell in it,” and, ‘ “May another take his place of leadership.”21Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us,22beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.’23So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.24Then they prayed, ‘Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen25to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.’26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

1دوست عزيزم تئوفيلوس: در كتاب نخست، به شرح كامل زندگی و تعاليم عيسی پرداختم و نوشتم كه او چگونه،2پس از آنكه احكام خود را توسط روحالقدس به رسولان برگزيدهٔ خود داد، به آسمان بالا رفت.3او در مدت چهل روز پس از مرگ خود، بارها خود را زنده به رسولان ظاهر ساخت و به طرق گوناگون به ايشان ثابت كرد كه واقعاً زنده شده است. در اين فرصتها، او دربارهٔ ملكوت خدا با ايشان سخن میگفت.4در يكی از اين ديدارها بود كه عيسی به ايشان گفت: «از شهر اورشليم بيرون نرويد بلكه منتظر روحالقدس باشيد زيرا او همان هديهای است كه پدرم وعدهاش را داده و من نيز دربارهاش با شما سخن گفتم.5«يحيی شما را با آب تعميد داد ولی تا چند روز ديگر شما با روحالقدس تعميد خواهيد يافت.»
صعود عيسی
6هنگامی كه عيسی با شاگردان بود آنان از او پرسيدند: «خداوندا، آيا در همين زمان است كه حكومت از دست رفتهٔ اسرائيل را باز برقرار خواهی كرد؟»7جواب داد: «اين زمانها را پدرم خدا تعيين میكند و دانستن آنها كار شما نيست.8ولی آنچه لازم است بدانيد اين است كه وقتی روحالقدس بر شما نازل شود، قدرت خواهيد يافت تا در ”اورشليم“، در سراسر ”يهوديه“، ”سامره“، و تا دورترين نقطهٔ دنيا دربارهٔ من شهادت دهيد.»9پس از آنكه عيسی اين سخنان را به پايان رساند، در مقابل چشمان ايشان، به سوی آسمان بالا رفت و در ابری ناپديد گشت.10ايشان هنوز به آسمان خيره بودند كه ناگهان متوجه شدند دو مرد سفيدپوش در ميانشان ايستادهاند.11ايشان گفتند: «ای مردان جليلی، چرا اينجا ايستادهايد و به آسمان خيره شدهايد؟ عيسی به آسمان رفت و همانگونه كه رفت، يک روز نيز باز خواهد گشت.»
انتخاب متياس به جای يهودا
12اين رويداد تاريخی بر روی كوه زيتون واقع شد كه با اورشليم يک كيلومتر فاصله داشت. پس، از آنجا به شهر بازگشتند.13آنان پيوسته در بالاخانهای با هم جمع میشدند و به دعا و نيايش میپرداختند. كسانی كه در اين دعا شركت داشتند، عبارت بودند از: پطرس، يوحنا، يعقوب، اندرياس، فيليپ، توما، برتولما، متی، يعقوب (پسر حلفی)، شمعون (كه به او غيور میگفتند)، يهودا (پسر يعقوب)، و برادران عيسی. چند زن از جمله مادر عيسی نيز در آنجا حضور داشتند.15در يكی از آن روزها كه در حدود صد و بيست نفر حاضر بودند، پطرس برخاست و به ايشان گفت:16«برادران، لازم بود پيشگويی كتاب آسمانی دربارهٔ يهودا عملی شود كه اشخاص شرير را راهنمايی كرد تا عيسی را بگيرند، زيرا مدتها قبل از آن، داوود نبی خيانت يهودا را با الهام از روحالقدس پيشگويی كرده بود.17يهودا يكی از ما بود. او را نيز عيسی مسيح انتخاب كرده بود تا مانند ما رسول خدا باشد.18ولی با پولی كه بابت خيانت خود گرفت، مزرعهای خريد، در همانجا با سر سقوط كرد، از ميان دو پاره شد و تمام رودههايش بيرون ريخت.19خبر مرگ او فوری در شهر پيچيد و مردم اسم آن زمين را ”مزرعهٔ خون“ گذاشتند.» پطرس ادامه داد و گفت:20«داوود پادشاه در اين مورد در كتاب زبور اينچنين پيشگويی كرده است: خانهاش خراب شود و كسی آنجا منزل نكند. و باز میگويد: مقام او را به ديگری بدهند.21«پس، حال، بايد يک نفر ديگر را انتخاب كنيم تا جای او را بگيرد و با ما شاهد زنده شدن عيسی باشد. البته بايد كسی را انتخاب كنيم كه از شروع همكاری ما با خداوند، هميشه با ما بوده است، يعنی از روزی كه يحيی او را تعميد داد تا روزی كه در مقابل چشمان ما به آسمان بالا رفت.»23حاضرين دو نفر را معرفی كردند، يكی«يوسف برسابا» كه به او يوستوس نيز میگفتند، و ديگری«متياس».24آنگاه دعا كردند تا شخصی را كه خدا میخواهد، انتخاب كنند، و گفتند: «خداوندا، تو از قلب همه باخبری. به ما نشان بده كدام يک از اين دو نفر را انتخاب كردهای تا رسول تو و جانشين يهودای خائن باشد كه به سزای عمل خود رسيد.»26پس ايشان قرعه انداختند و متياس انتخاب شد و در خدمت خدا همكار يازده رسول ديگر گرديد.
