1Now a troublemaker named Sheba son of Bikri, a Benjaminite, happened to be there. He sounded the trumpet and shouted, ‘We have no share in David, no part in Jesse’s son! Every man to his tent, Israel!’2So all the men of Israel deserted David to follow Sheba son of Bikri. But the men of Judah stayed by their king all the way from the Jordan to Jerusalem.3When David returned to his palace in Jerusalem, he took the ten concubines he had left to take care of the palace and put them in a house under guard. He provided for them but had no sexual relations with them. They were kept in confinement till the day of their death, living as widows.4Then the king said to Amasa, ‘Summon the men of Judah to come to me within three days, and be here yourself.’5But when Amasa went to summon Judah, he took longer than the time the king had set for him.6David said to Abishai, ‘Now Sheba son of Bikri will do us more harm than Absalom did. Take your master’s men and pursue him, or he will find fortified cities and escape from us.’*7So Joab’s men and the Kerethites and Pelethites and all the mighty warriors went out under the command of Abishai. They marched out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba son of Bikri.8While they were at the great rock in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Joab was wearing his military tunic, and strapped over it at his waist was a belt with a dagger in its sheath. As he stepped forward, it dropped out of its sheath.9Joab said to Amasa, ‘How are you, my brother?’ Then Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.10Amasa was not on his guard against the dagger in Joab’s hand, and Joab plunged it into his belly, and his intestines spilled out on the ground. Without being stabbed again, Amasa died. Then Joab and his brother Abishai pursued Sheba son of Bikri.11One of Joab’s men stood beside Amasa and said, ‘Whoever favours Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab!’12Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the middle of the road, and the man saw that all the troops came to a halt there. When he realised that everyone who came up to Amasa stopped, he dragged him from the road into a field and threw a garment over him.13After Amasa had been removed from the road, everyone went on with Joab to pursue Sheba son of Bikri.14Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel Beth Maakah and through the entire region of the Bikrites,* who gathered together and followed him.15All the troops with Joab came and besieged Sheba in Abel Beth Maakah. They built a siege ramp up to the city, and it stood against the outer fortifications. While they were battering the wall to bring it down,16a wise woman called from the city, ‘Listen! Listen! Tell Joab to come here so that I can speak to him.’17He went towards her, and she asked, ‘Are you Joab?’ ‘I am,’ he answered. She said, ‘Listen to what your servant has to say.’ ‘I’m listening,’ he said.18She continued, ‘Long ago they used to say, “Get your answer at Abel,” and that settled it.19We are the peaceful and faithful in Israel. You are trying to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why do you want to swallow up the Lord’s inheritance?’20‘Far be it from me!’ Joab replied, ‘Far be it from me to swallow up or destroy!21That is not the case. A man named Sheba son of Bikri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Hand over this one man, and I’ll withdraw from the city.’ The woman said to Joab, ‘His head will be thrown to you from the wall.’22Then the woman went to all the people with her wise advice, and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bikri and threw it to Joab. So he sounded the trumpet, and his men dispersed from the city, each returning to his home. And Joab went back to the king in Jerusalem.

1در اين وقت مرد آشوبگری به نام شبع (پسر بكری بنيامينی) شيپورش را به صدا درآورده، مردم را دور خود جمع كرد و گفت: «ما داوود را نمیخواهيم. او رهبر ما نيست. ای مردم اسرائيل به خانههايتان برويد.»2پس همه، غير از قبيله يهودا، داوود را ترک گفته، به دنبال شبع رفتند. اما مردان يهودا نزد پادشاه خود ماندند و از اردن تا اورشليم او را همراهی كردند.3وقتی پادشاه به كاخ خود در اورشليم رسيد، دستور داد آن ده كنيزی را كه برای نگهداری كاخ در آنجا گذاشته بود، از ديگران جدا كرده، به خانهای كه زير نظر نگهبانان قرار داشت ببرند و هر چه لازم دارند به ايشان بدهند. ولی داوود ديگر هرگز با آنها همبستر نشد. پس آن ده زن تا آخر عمرشان در انزوا ماندند.4بعد از آن، پادشاه به عماسا دستور داد كه در عرض سه روز سپاه يهودا را آماده سازد تا نزد او حاضر شوند.5عماسا برای جمعآوری سربازان بيرون رفت، ولی اين كار بيش از سه روز طول كشيد.6پس داوود به ابيشای گفت: «شبع برای ما از ابشالوم خطرناکتر خواهد بود. بنابراين تو افراد مرا برداشته، او را تعقيب كن پيش از اينكه وارد شهر حصارداری شده، از دست ما فرار كند.»7پس ابيشای با محافظين دربار و يوآب با بهترين سربازان خود از اورشليم خارج شده، به تعقيب شبع پرداختند.8وقتی به سنگ بزرگی كه در جبعون بود رسيدند، با عماسا روبرو شدند. يوآب لباس نظامی پوشيده و خنجری به كمر بسته بود. وقتی پيش میآمد تا با عماسا احوالپرسی كند، آهسته خنجرش را از غلاف بيرون كشيد. او به بهانهٔ اينكه میخواهد عماسا را ببوسد با دست راستش ريش او را گرفت و گفت: «ای برادر، از ديدنت خوشحال هستم.»10عماسا متوجه خنجری كه در دست چپ يوآب بود، نشد. يوآب خنجر را به شكم او فرو كرد و رودههای او بر زمين ريخت. عماسا جابهجا مرد به طوری که يوآب لازم نديد ضربهٔ ديگری به او بزند. يوآب و برادرش او را به همان حال واگذاشته، به تعقيب شبع ادامه دادند.11يكی از سرداران يوآب، به سربازان عماسا گفت: «اگر طرفدار داوود هستيد، بياييد و به يوآب ملحق شويد.»12عماسا در وسط راه غرق در خون افتاده بود. آن سردار وقتی ديد عدهٔ زيادی دور جنازهٔ عماسا حلقه زدهاند و به آن خيره شدهاند، جسد را از ميان راه برداشت و آن را به صحرا برد و پوششی بر آن انداخت.13وقتی جنازهٔ عماسا برداشته شد، همه به دنبال يوآب رفتند تا شبع را تعقيب كنند.14در اين ميان شبع به نزد تمام قبايل اسرائيل رفت. هنگامی كه به شهر آبل واقع در بيتمعكه رسيد، همهٔ افراد طايفهٔ بكری دور او جمع شدند.15نيروهای يوآب نيز به آبل رسيدند و آن شهر را محاصره كردند و در برابر حصار شهر، سنگرهای بلند ساخته، به تخريب حصار پرداختند.16در آن شهر زن حكيمی زندگی میكرد. او از داخل شهر، يوآب را صدا زده گفت: «ای يوآب، به من گوش كن. به اينجا بيا تا با تو حرف بزنم.»17وقتی يوآب به آن زن نزديک شد، زن پرسيد: «آيا تو يوآب هستی؟» گفت: «بلی.» زن گفت: «به حرفهای كنيزت گوش بده.» گفت: «بگو، گوش میدهم.»18زن گفت: «از قديم گفتهاند: اگر مشكلی داريد به آبل برويد و جوابتان را بگيريد. چون ما هميشه با پندهای حكيمانهٔ خود، مشكل مردم را حل میكنيم.19شما میخواهيد شهر ما را كه در اسرائيل شهری قديمی و صلحجو و وفادار است خراب كنيد. آيا انصاف است شهری كه به خداوند تعلق دارد خراب شود؟»20يوآب پاسخ داد: «نه، اينطور نيست.21من فقط به دنبال شبع هستم. او از اهالی كوهستان افرايم است و بر ضد داوود پادشاه شورش نموده است. اگر او را به من تسليم كنيد شهر را ترک خواهيم كرد.» زن گفت: «بسيار خوب، ما سر او را از روی حصار جلو تو میاندازيم.»22بعد آن زن پيش اهالی شهر رفت و نقشهٔ خود را با آنان در ميان گذاشت. آنها نيز سر شبع را از تنش جدا كردند و پيش پای يوآب انداختند. يوآب شيپور زد و سربازانش را از حمله به شهر بازداشت. سپس ايشان به اورشليم نزد پادشاه بازگشتند.
مقامات داوود پادشاه
23يوآب فرماندهٔ سپاه اسرائيل بود و بناياهو فرماندهٔ محافظين دربار،24ادونيرام سرپرست كارهای اجباری، و یهوشافاط وقايعنگار بود.25شيوا کاتب بود و صادوق و ابياتار هر دو كاهن بودند.26عيرای يائيری نيز يكی از كاهنان داوود به شمار میآمد.
