1In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king.2David thought, ‘I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.’ So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father. When David’s men came to the land of the Ammonites,3the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun their lord, ‘Do you think David is honouring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Hasn’t David sent them to you only to explore the city and spy it out and overthrow it?’4So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard, cut off their garments at the buttocks, and sent them away.5When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, ‘Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.’6When the Ammonites realised that they had become obnoxious to David, they hired twenty thousand Aramean foot soldiers from Beth Rehob and Zobah, as well as the king of Maakah with a thousand men, and also twelve thousand men from Tob.7On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men.8The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of their city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maakah were by themselves in the open country.9Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans.10He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother and deployed them against the Ammonites.11Joab said, ‘If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you.12Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.’13Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him.14When the Ammonites realised that the Arameans were fleeing, they fled before Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab returned from fighting the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.15After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they regrouped.16Hadadezer had Arameans brought from beyond the River Euphrates; they went to Helam, with Shobak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.17When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan and went to Helam. The Arameans formed their battle lines to meet David and fought against him.18But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers.* He also struck down Shobak the commander of their army, and he died there.19When all the kings who were vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with the Israelites and became subject to them. So the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.

1پس از چندی، پادشاه عمون مرد و پسرش حانون بر تخت او نشست.2داوود پادشاه، پيش خود فكر كرد: «بايد رسم دوستی را با حانون بجا آورم، چون پدرش ناحاش، دوست باوفای من بود.» پس داوود نمايندگانی به دربار حانون فرستاد تا به او تسليت بگويند. ولی وقتی نمايندگان به عمون رسيدند،3بزرگان عمون به حانون گفتند: «اين اشخاص برای احترام به پدرت به اينجا نيامدهاند، بلكه داوود آنها را فرستاده است تا پيش از حمله به ما، شهرها را جاسوسی كنند.»4از اين رو، حانون فرستادههای داوود را گرفته، ريش يک طرف صورتشان را تراشيد و لباسشان را از پشت پاره كرده، ايشان را نيمه برهنه به كشورشان برگردانيد.5نمايندگان داوود خجالت میكشيدند با اين وضع به وطن بازگردند. داوود چون اين خبر را شنيد، دستور داد آنها در شهر اريحا بمانند تا ريششان بلند شود.6مردم عمون وقتی فهميدند با اين كار، داوود را دشمن خود كردهاند، بيست هزار سرباز پيادهٔ سوری از بيترحوب و صوبه و دوازده هزار نفر از طوب، و نيز پادشاه معكه را با هزار نفر اجير كردند.7وقتی داوود از اين موضوع باخبر شد، يوآب و تمام سپاه اسرائيل را به مقابله با آنها فرستاد. عمونیها از دروازههای شهر دفاع میكردند و سربازان سوری اهل بيترحوب و صوبه و سربازان طوب و معكه، در صحرا مستقر شده بودند.9وقتی يوآب ديد كه بايد در دو جبهه بجنگد، گروهی از بهترين رزمندگان خود را انتخاب كرد و فرماندهی آنها را به عهدهٔ گرفت تا به جنگ سربازان سوری برود.10بقيهٔ سربازان را به برادرش ابيشای سپرد تا به عمونیها كه از شهر دفاع میكردند، حمله كند.11يوآب به برادرش گفت: «اگر از عهدهٔ سربازان سوری برنيامدم به كمک من بيا، و اگر تو از عهدهٔ عمونیها برنيامدی، من به كمک تو میآيم.12شجاع باش! اگر واقعاً میخواهيم قوم خود و شهرهای خدای خود را نجات دهيم، امروز بايد مردانه بجنگيم. هر چه خواست خداوند است، انجام خواهد شد.»13هنگامی كه يوآب و سربازانش حمله كردند، سوریان پا به فرار گذاشتند.14عمونيان نيز وقتی ديدند مزدوران سوری فرار میكنند، آنها هم فرار كرده، تا داخل شهر، عقبنشينی نمودند. يوآب از جنگ با عمونیها بازگشت و به اورشليم مراجعت كرد.15سوريان وقتی ديدند نمیتوانند در برابر اسرائيلیها مقاومت كنند، تمام سربازان خود را احضار كردند. هددعزر پادشاه، سوریهايی را نيز كه در شرق رود فرات بودند جمع كرد. اين نيروها به فرماندهی شوبک كه فرماندهٔ سپاه هددعزر بود به حيلام آمدند.17داوود چون اين را شنيد، همهٔ سربازان اسرائيلی را جمع كرد و از رود اردن عبور كرده، به حيلام آمد. در آنجا با سربازان سوری وارد جنگ شد.18ولی سوريان باز هم گريختند و داوود و سربازانش هفتصد عرابه سوار و چهل هزار اسب سوار سوری را كشتند. شوبک نيز در اين جنگ كشته شد.19وقتی پادشاهان مزدور هددعزر ديدند كه سربازان سوری شكست خوردهاند، با اسرائيلیها صلح نموده، تابع آنها شدند. از آن پس، ديگر سوریها جرأت نكردند به عمونیها كمک كنند.
