1Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa.2The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua.3The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him critically.4Saul said to his armour-bearer, ‘Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.’ But the armour-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it.5When the armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him.6So Saul and his three sons and his armour-bearer and all his men died together that same day.7When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.8The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.9They cut off his head and stripped off his armour, and they sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among their people.10They put his armour in the temple of the Ashtoreths and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.11When the people of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,12all their valiant men marched through the night to Beth Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh, where they burned them.13Then they took their bones and buried them under a tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.

1فلسطينیها با اسرائيلیها وارد جنگ شدند و آنها را شكست دادند. اسرائیلیها فرار كردند و در دامنهٔ كوه جلبوع، تلفات زيادی به جای گذاشتند.2فلسطينیها شائول و پسران او يوناتان، ابيناداب و ملكيشوع را محاصره كردند و پسرانش را كشتند.3عرصه بر شائول تنگ شد و تيراندازان فلسطينی دورش را گرفته او را به سختی مجروح كردند.4پس شائول به محافظ خود گفت: «پيش از آنكه به دست اين كافران بيفتم و با رسوايی كشته شوم، تو با شمشيرت مرا بكش!» ولی آن مرد ترسيد اين كار را بكند. پس شائول شمشير خود را گرفت و خود را بر آن انداخت و مرد.5محافظ شائول چون او را مرده ديد، او نيز خود را روی شمشيرش انداخت و همراه شائول مرد.6بدين ترتيب، شائول و سه پسرش و محافظ وی و همهٔ افرادش در آن روز كشته شدند.7اسرائيلیهايی كه در آن سوس دره يزرعيل و شرق رود اردن بودند، وقتی شنيدند كه سربازانشان فرار كرده و شائول و پسرانش كشته شدهاند، شهرهای خود را ترک نموده گريختند. پس فلسطينیها آمدند و در آن شهرها ساكن شدند.8در فردای آن روز، چون فلسطينیها برای غارت كشتهشدگان رفتند، جنازهٔ شائول و سه پسرش را كه در كوه جلبوع افتاده بود يافتند.9آنها سر شائول را از تنش جدا كرده، اسلحهٔ او را باز كردند، سپس جارچيان به سراسر فلسطين فرستادند تا خبر كشته شدن شائول را به بتخانهها و مردم فلسطين برسانند.10اسلحهٔ شائول را در بتخانهٔ عشتاروت گذاشتند و جسدش را بر ديوار شهر بيتْشان آويختند.11وقتی ساكنان يابيشِ جلعاد، آنچه را كه فلسطينیها بر سر شائول آورده بودند شنيدند،12مردان دلاور خود را به بيتشان فرستادند. آنها تمام شب در راه بودند تا سرانجام به بيتْشان رسيدند و اجساد شائول و پسرانش را از ديوار پايين كشيده، به يابيش آوردند و آنها را در آنجا سوزاندند.13سپس استخوانهای ايشان را گرفته، زير درخت بلوطی كه در يابيش است دفن كردند و هفت روز روزه گرفتند.
