1* When Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been anointed king to succeed his father David, he sent his envoys to Solomon, because he had always been on friendly terms with David.2Solomon sent back this message to Hiram:3‘You know that because of the wars waged against my father David from all sides, he could not build a temple for the Name of the Lord his God until the Lord put his enemies under his feet.4But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster.5I intend, therefore, to build a temple for the Name of the Lord my God, as the Lord told my father David, when he said, “Your son whom I will put on the throne in your place will build the temple for my Name.”6‘So give orders that cedars of Lebanon be cut for me. My men will work with yours, and I will pay you for your men whatever wages you set. You know that we have no-one so skilled in felling timber as the Sidonians.’7When Hiram heard Solomon’s message, he was greatly pleased and said, ‘Praise be to the Lord today, for he has given David a wise son to rule over this great nation.’8So Hiram sent word to Solomon: ‘I have received the message you sent me and will do all you want in providing the cedar and juniper logs.9My men will haul them down from Lebanon to the Mediterranean Sea, and I will float them as rafts by sea to the place you specify. There I will separate them and you can take them away. And you are to grant my wish by providing food for my royal household.’10In this way Hiram kept Solomon supplied with all the cedar and juniper logs he wanted,11and Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand cors* of wheat as food for his household, in addition to twenty thousand baths** of pressed olive oil. Solomon continued to do this for Hiram year after year.12The Lord gave Solomon wisdom, just as he had promised him. There were peaceful relations between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.13King Solomon conscripted labourers from all Israel – thirty thousand men.14He sent them off to Lebanon in shifts of ten thousand a month, so that they spent one month in Lebanon and two months at home. Adoniram was in charge of the forced labour.15Solomon had seventy thousand carriers and eighty thousand stonecutters in the hills,16as well as thirty-three hundred* foremen who supervised the project and directed the workers.17At the king’s command they removed from the quarry large blocks of high-grade stone to provide a foundation of dressed stone for the temple.18The craftsmen of Solomon and Hiram and workers from Byblos cut and prepared the timber and stone for the building of the temple.

1حيرام، پادشاه صور، كه در زمان داوود پادشاه دوست او بود، وقتی شنيد كه سليمان، پسر داوود، جانشين پدرش شده است چند سفير به دربار او فرستاد.2سليمان نيز متقابلاً قاصدانی با اين پيام نزد حيرام فرستاد:3«تو میدانی كه پدرم داوود به خاطر جنگهای پیدرپی نتوانست خانهای برای عبادت خداوند، خدای خود بسازد. او منتظر بود كه خداوند او را بر دشمنانش پيروز گرداند.4اما اينک خداوند، خدايم در اسرائيل صلح و امنيت برقرار كرده است و من دشمنی ندارم تا به من حمله كند.5خداوند به پدرم وعده فرمود: پسرت كه به جای تو بر تخت سلطنت مینشيند، برای من خانهای خواهد ساخت. حال در نظر دارم برای عبادت خداوند، خدايم خانهای بسازم.6آنچه از تو میخواهم اين است كه چوببُران خود را به کوههای لبنان بفرستی تا از درختان سرو برايم الوار تهيه كنند. من هم افرادم را به آنجا روانه میكنم تا دوش به دوش آنها كار كنند. مزد كارگران تو را هم هر قدر تعيين كنی میپردازم. چون همانطور كه میدانی در اسرائيل هيچكس به خوبی صیدونیها در بريدن درخت ماهر نيست!»7حيرام از اين پيام سليمان بسيار خوشحال شد و گفت: «سپاس بر خداوند كه به داوود پسر حكيمی داده است تا بر مملكت بزرگ اسرائيل سلطنت كند.»8آنگاه اين پيام را برای سليمان فرستاد: «پيغامت را دريافت كردم و خواهش تو را دربارهٔ تهيهٔ الوار درخت سرو و صنوبر بجا میآورم.9افرادم الوار را از کوههای لبنان به ساحل دريا میآورند. سپس آنها را به هم میبندند و به آب میاندازند تا از كنار دريا به طور شناور حركت كنند و به نقطهای كه میخواهی برسند. در آنجا افراد من چوبها را از هم باز میكنند و تحويل میدهند. تو نيز میتوانی در عوض، برای خاندان سلطنتی من آذوقه بفرستی.»10به اين ترتيب، حيرام چوب سرو و صنوبر مورد نياز سليمان را فراهم كرد،11و به جای آن، سليمان هر سال دو هزار تن گندم و چهارصد هزار ليتر روغن زيتون خالص برای حيرام میفرستاد.12بين حيرام و سليمان صلح برقرار بود و آن دو با هم پيمان دوستی بستند. خداوند همانطور كه فرموده بود به سليمان حكمت زيادی بخشيد.13آنگاه سليمان سی هزار نفر را از سراسر اسرائيل به بيگاری گرفت.14ادونيرام را نيز به سرپرستی آنها گماشت. او هر ماه به نوبت، ده هزار نفر از آنان را به لبنان میفرستاد. به اين ترتيب، هر کس دو ماه در خانهٔ خود بود و يک ماه در لبنان.15سليمان هفتاد هزار باربر و هشتاد هزار سنگتراش در كوهستان داشت16و سه هزار و سيصد سركارگر بر آنها نظارت میكردند.17سنگتراشها به دستور پادشاه سنگهای مرغوب بزرگ برای بنای خانهٔ خدا میكندند و میتراشيدند.18اهالی جبال هم به چوببران سليمان و حيرام در بريدن چوب و تهيه الوار و تراشيدن سنگها برای خانهٔ خدا كمک میكردند.
