1Samson went down to Timnah and saw there a young Philistine woman.2When he returned, he said to his father and mother, ‘I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.’3His father and mother replied, ‘Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?’ But Samson said to his father, ‘Get her for me. She’s the right one for me.’4(His parents did not know that this was from the Lord, who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines; for at that time they were ruling over Israel.)5Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring towards him.6The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done.7Then he went down and talked with the woman, and he liked her.8Some time later, when he went back to marry her, he turned aside to look at the lion’s carcass, and in it he saw a swarm of bees and some honey.9He scooped out the honey with his hands and ate as he went along. When he rejoined his parents, he gave them some, and they too ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s carcass.10Now his father went down to see the woman. And there Samson held a feast, as was customary for young men.11When the people saw him, they chose thirty men to be his companions.12‘Let me tell you a riddle,’ Samson said to them. ‘If you can give me the answer within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.13If you can’t tell me the answer, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.’ ‘Tell us your riddle,’ they said. ‘Let’s hear it.’14He replied, ‘Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet.’ For three days they could not give the answer.15On the fourth* day, they said to Samson’s wife, ‘Coax your husband into explaining the riddle for us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you invite us here to steal our property?’16Then Samson’s wife threw herself on him, sobbing, ‘You hate me! You don’t really love me. You’ve given my people a riddle, but you haven’t told me the answer.’ ‘I haven’t even explained it to my father or mother,’ he replied, ‘so why should I explain it to you?’17She cried the whole seven days of the feast. So on the seventh day he finally told her, because she continued to press him. She in turn explained the riddle to her people.18Before sunset on the seventh day the men of the town said to him, ‘What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?’ Samson said to them, ‘If you had not ploughed with my heifer, you would not have solved my riddle.’19Then the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him. He went down to Ashkelon, struck down thirty of their men, stripped them of everything and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with anger, he returned to his father’s home.20And Samson’s wife was given to one of his companions who had attended him at the feast.

1Un jour, Samson se rendit à Timna*, il y remarqua une jeune fille philistine.2A son retour, il raconta la chose à ses parents et leur dit: J’ai remarqué une femme parmi les Philistines et je voudrais que vous alliez la demander en mariage pour moi.3Ses parents lui répondirent: Est-ce qu’il n’y a pas de jeune fille dans ta tribu ou dans les autres tribus de notre peuple, pour que tu ailles chercher une épouse chez ces Philistins incirconcis? Mais Samson dit à son père: C’est elle que je juge bon de prendre, va la demander pour moi!4Ses parents ne savaient pas que cela était dirigé par l’Eternel, car il cherchait une occasion de conflit avec les Philistins. En effet, en ce temps-là, les Philistins dominaient sur Israël.5Samson se rendit donc avec son père et sa mère à Timna. Quand ils arrivèrent près des vignobles de la ville, tout à coup un jeune lion* marcha sur lui en rugissant.6Alors l’Esprit de l’Eternel fondit sur lui et, les mains nues, Samson déchira le lion en deux, comme on le fait d’un chevreau. Il se garda de raconter la chose à ses parents.7Ensuite, il alla faire sa déclaration à la femme qui lui plut beaucoup.8Lorsqu’il revint, quelque temps après, pour l’épouser, il fit un détour pour aller voir le cadavre du lion, et voici qu’il trouva dans la carcasse un essaim d’abeilles et du miel.9Il en prit dans ses mains et, tout en marchant, il en mangea. Lorsqu’il eut rejoint ses parents, il leur en offrit, sans leur indiquer qu’il avait recueilli ce miel dans le cadavre du lion.
L’énigme de Samson
10Son père se rendit chez la femme pour convenir du mariage, et Samson organisa un banquet de mariage, comme c’était la coutume des jeunes gens.11Lorsqu’on le vit, on choisit trente compagnons pour être avec lui.12Samson leur dit: Je vais vous proposer une énigme. Si vous trouvez la solution et que vous me la donnez d’ici la fin des sept jours du festin, je vous donnerai trente tuniques et trente habits de rechange.13Mais si vous ne pouvez pas me donner la solution, c’est vous qui me donnerez trente chemises et trente habits de rechange. – Nous t’écoutons, lui répondirent-ils. Propose-nous ton énigme!14Alors il leur dit: De celui qui mange ╵vient ce que l’on mange, et ce qui est doux ╵est sorti du fort. Pendant trois jours, les jeunes gens ne réussirent pas à trouver la solution de la devinette.15Le quatrième jour*, ils dirent à la femme de Samson: Enjôle ton mari pour qu’il te donne la réponse de la devinette, et viens nous la rapporter, sinon nous te brûlerons, toi et ta famille. Est-ce pour nous déposséder que vous nous avez invités?16Alors elle se mit à pleurer tout contre son mari et lui dit: Tu ne m’aimes pas! Tu me détestes! Tu as proposé une devinette à mes compatriotes et tu ne m’en as pas révélé la solution. – Vois-tu, lui répondit-il, je ne l’ai même pas révélée à mes parents, comment te la donnerais-je à toi?17Elle le poursuivit de ses pleurs jusqu’au bout des sept jours de festin, si bien que le septième jour, harcelé par ses instances, il lui donna la solution de la devinette. Elle s’empressa de la rapporter à ses compatriotes.18Le septième jour, les jeunes gens de la ville dirent à Samson avant le coucher du soleil: Qu’y a-t-il de plus doux que le miel et de plus fort qu’un lion? Il leur répondit: Si vous n’aviez pas labouré avec ma génisse, vous n’auriez pas trouvé la réponse.19Alors l’Esprit de l’Eternel fondit sur lui, il se rendit à Ashkelôn*, y tua trente hommes, s’empara de leurs vêtements et donna les habits de rechange à ceux qui lui avaient révélé le sens de la devinette. Il rentra chez lui, bouillant de colère.20On maria sa femme à celui de ses compagnons qui lui avait servi de garçon d’honneur.
