Micaiah prophesies against Ahab

1 For three years there was no war between Aram and Israel. 2 But in the third year Jehoshaphat king of Judah went down to see the king of Israel. 3 The king of Israel had said to his officials, ‘Don’t you know that Ramoth Gilead belongs to us and yet we are doing nothing to retake it from the king of Aram?’ 4 So he asked Jehoshaphat, ‘Will you go with me to fight against Ramoth Gilead?’ Jehoshaphat replied to the king of Israel, ‘I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.’ 5 But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, ‘First seek the counsel of the Lord.’ 6 So the king of Israel brought together the prophets – about four hundred men – and asked them, ‘Shall I go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?’ ‘Go,’ they answered, ‘for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.’ 7 But Jehoshaphat asked, ‘Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord here whom we can enquire of?’ 8 The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, ‘There is still one prophet through whom we can enquire of the Lord, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.’ ‘The king should not say such a thing,’ Jehoshaphat replied. 9 So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, ‘Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once.’ 10 Dressed in their royal robes, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the threshing-floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them. 11 Now Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had made iron horns and he declared, ‘This is what the Lord says: “With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed.” ’ 12 All the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. ‘Attack Ramoth Gilead and be victorious,’ they said, ‘for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.’ 13 The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, ‘Look, the other prophets without exception are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favourably.’ 14 But Micaiah said, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, I can tell him only what the Lord tells me.’ 15 When he arrived, the king asked him, ‘Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or not?’ ‘Attack and be victorious,’ he answered, ‘for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.’ 16 The king said to him, ‘How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord?’ 17 Then Micaiah answered, ‘I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the Lord said, “These people have no master. Let each one go home in peace.” ’ 18 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, ‘Didn’t I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?’ 19 Micaiah continued, ‘Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing round him on his right and on his left. 20 And the Lord said, “Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?” ‘One suggested this, and another that. 21 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord and said, “I will entice him.” 22 ‘ “By what means?” the Lord asked. ‘ “I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,” he said. ‘ “You will succeed in enticing him,” said the Lord. “Go and do it.” 23 ‘So now the Lord has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster for you.’ 24 Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped Micaiah in the face. ‘Which way did the spirit from* the Lord go when he went from me to speak to you?’ he asked. 25 Micaiah replied, ‘You will find out on the day you go to hide in an inner room.’ 26 The king of Israel then ordered, ‘Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon the ruler of the city and to Joash the king’s son 27 and say, “This is what the king says: put this fellow in prison and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely.” ’ 28 Micaiah declared, ‘If you ever return safely, the Lord has not spoken through me.’ Then he added, ‘Mark my words, all you people!’

Ahab killed at Ramoth Gilead

29 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead. 30 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, ‘I will enter the battle in disguise, but you wear your royal robes.’ So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle. 31 Now the king of Aram had ordered his thirty-two chariot commanders, ‘Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.’ 32 When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, ‘Surely this is the king of Israel.’ So they turned to attack him, but when Jehoshaphat cried out, 33 the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel and stopped pursuing him. 34 But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the sections of his armour. The king told his chariot driver, ‘Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I’ve been wounded.’ 35 All day long the battle raged, and the king was propped up in his chariot facing the Arameans. The blood from his wound ran onto the floor of the chariot, and that evening he died. 36 As the sun was setting, a cry spread through the army: ‘Every man to his town. Every man to his land!’ 37 So the king died and was brought to Samaria, and they buried him there. 38 They washed the chariot at a pool in Samaria (where the prostitutes bathed),* and the dogs licked up his blood, as the word of the Lord had declared. 39 As for the other events of Ahab’s reign, including all he did, the palace he built and adorned with ivory, and the cities he fortified, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 40 Ahab rested with his ancestors. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.

Jehoshaphat king of Judah

41 Jehoshaphat son of Asa became king of Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel. 42 Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for twenty-five years. His mother’s name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi. 43 In everything he followed the ways of his father Asa and did not stray from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. The high places, however, were not removed, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.* 44 Jehoshaphat was also at peace with the king of Israel. 45 As for the other events of Jehoshaphat’s reign, the things he achieved and his military exploits, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 46 He rid the land of the rest of the male shrine-prostitutes who remained there even after the reign of his father Asa. 47 There was then no king in Edom; a provincial governor ruled. 48 Now Jehoshaphat built a fleet of trading ships* to go to Ophir for gold, but they never set sail – they were wrecked at Ezion Geber. 49 At that time Ahaziah son of Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, ‘Let my men sail with yours,’ but Jehoshaphat refused. 50 Then Jehoshaphat rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of David his father. And Jehoram his son succeeded him as king.

Ahaziah king of Israel

51 Ahaziah son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel for two years. 52 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, because he followed the ways of his father and mother and of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin. 53 He served and worshipped Baal and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, just as his father had done.

Achab veut reprendre une ville israélite

1 Trois années s’écoulèrent sans qu’il y ait de guerre entre la Syrie et Israël. 2 Dans le courant de la troisième année, Josaphat, le roi de Juda, rendit visite à Achab, le roi d’Israël. 3 Or, celui-ci avait dit à ses ministres: Savez-vous que Ramoth en Galaad* est à nous? Et pourtant nous ne faisons rien pour la reprendre au roi de Syrie! 4 Quand Josaphat vint le voir, Achab lui demanda donc: Viendras-tu attaquer avec moi Ramoth en Galaad? Josaphat lui répondit: J’irai avec toi, mes troupes iront avec les tiennes, et mes chevaux avec les tiens. 5 Mais il ajouta: Consulte d’abord l’Eternel, je te prie.

Le prophète Michée face aux faux prophètes

6 Le roi d’Israël rassembla les prophètes, qui étaient environ quatre cents, et leur demanda: Dois-je aller combattre pour reprendre Ramoth en Galaad, ou dois-je y renoncer? Ils répondirent: Vas-y! Le Seigneur la livrera au roi. 7 Mais Josaphat insista: N’y a-t-il plus ici aucun prophète de l’Eternel, par qui nous puissions le consulter? 8 Le roi d’Israël lui répondit: Il y a encore un homme par qui l’on pourrait consulter l’Eternel; mais je le déteste, car il ne m’annonce jamais rien de bon; il ne m’annonce que du mal. Il s’agit de Michée*, fils de Yimla. Josaphat s’écria: Que le roi ne parle pas ainsi! 9 Alors le roi d’Israël appela un chambellan et lui ordonna de faire venir au plus vite Michée, fils de Yimla. 10 Le roi d’Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, revêtus de leurs costumes royaux, siégeaient chacun sur un trône, sur l’esplanade qui s’étend devant la porte de Samarie, tandis que tous les prophètes étaient devant eux dans un état d’exaltation. 11 L’un d’eux, Sédécias, fils de Kenaana, s’était fabriqué des cornes de fer et affirmait: Voici ce que déclare l’Eternel: « Avec ces cornes, tu frapperas les Syriens jusqu’à leur extermination. » 12 Tous les autres prophètes confirmaient ce message et disaient: Va attaquer Ramoth en Galaad! Tu seras vainqueur, et l’Eternel livrera la ville au roi. 13 Pendant ce temps, le messager qui était allé chercher Michée lui dit: Les prophètes sont unanimes pour prédire du bien au roi. Tu ferais bien de parler comme eux et de lui prédire aussi le succès! 14 Michée lui répondit: Aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant, je transmettrai ce que l’Eternel me dira. 15 Lorsqu’il fut arrivé devant le roi, celui-ci lui demanda: Michée, devons-nous aller attaquer Ramoth en Galaad ou devons-nous y renoncer? – Bien sûr, vas-y, lui répondit Michée, tu seras vainqueur, et l’Eternel livrera la ville au roi! 16 Mais le roi lui rétorqua: Combien de fois faudra-t-il que je t’adjure de me dire seulement la vérité de la part de l’Eternel? 17 Alors Michée déclara: J’ai vu tous les Israélites disséminés sur les montagnes; ils ressemblaient à des brebis ╵qui n’ont pas de berger*. Et l’Eternel a dit: « Ces gens n’ont plus de souverain. Que chacun d’eux retourne ╵tranquillement chez soi! » 18 Le roi d’Israël dit alors à Josaphat: Je te l’avais bien dit: « Cet homme-là ne me prophétise jamais rien de bon, c’est toujours du mal. » 19 Mais Michée continua: Eh bien, oui. Ecoute ce que dit l’Eternel! J’ai vu l’Eternel siégeant sur son trône, tandis que toute l’armée des êtres célestes se tenait près de lui, à sa droite et à sa gauche. 20 L’Eternel demanda: « Qui trompera Achab pour qu’il aille attaquer Ramoth en Galaad et qu’il tombe sur le champ de bataille? » L’un proposait ceci, l’autre cela. 21 Finalement, un esprit s’avança, se plaça devant l’Eternel et dit: « Moi, je le tromperai. » L’Eternel lui demanda: « Et comment t’y prendras-tu? » 22 « J’irai, répondit-il, inspirer des mensonges à tous ses prophètes. » L’Eternel dit: « Pour sûr, tu le tromperas, tu y réussiras. Va donc et fais comme tu l’as dit! » 23 Et maintenant, conclut Michée, c’est ce qui est arrivé: l’Eternel a fait qu’un esprit de mensonge inspire tous tes prophètes ici présents, car l’Eternel a résolu ta perte. 24 Alors Sédécias, fils de Kenaana, l’un des prophètes, s’approcha, gifla Michée et lui demanda: Par où l’esprit qui vient de l’Eternel* est-il sorti de moi pour te parler? 25 Michée répondit: Tu le sauras le jour où tu fuiras en passant de chambre en chambre pour te cacher. 26 Aussitôt le roi d’Israël ordonna à l’un de ses officiers: Arrête Michée et emmène-le à Amôn, le gouverneur de la ville, et à Joas, le fils du roi*. 27 Tu leur ordonneras de ma part de jeter cet individu en prison et de ne lui donner qu’une ration réduite de pain et d’eau jusqu’à ce que je revienne sain et sauf de cette expédition. 28 Michée s’écria: Si vraiment tu reviens sain et sauf, ce sera la preuve que l’Eternel n’a pas parlé par moi. Puis il ajouta: Ecoutez, vous tous les peuples!

La mort d’Achab

29 Alors le roi d’Israël et Josaphat, le roi de Juda, partirent pour Ramoth en Galaad. 30 En chemin, Achab dit à Josaphat: Je vais me déguiser pour aller au combat; mais toi, garde tes habits royaux. Le roi d’Israël se déguisa donc pour la bataille. 31 Le roi de Syrie avait donné cet ordre aux trente-deux chefs de ses chars: Vous ne vous occuperez ni des simples soldats ni des officiers, vous concentrerez votre attaque sur le roi d’Israël uniquement. 32 Quand les chefs des chars aperçurent Josaphat, ils se dirent: « C’est certainement lui le roi d’Israël », et ils se dirigèrent sur lui pour l’attaquer. Mais Josaphat poussa un cri. 33 Quand les chefs des chars se rendirent compte que ce n’était pas le roi d’Israël, ils se détournèrent de lui. 34 Un soldat syrien tira une flèche de son arc, au hasard; elle atteignit le roi d’Israël à la jointure entre les pièces de la cuirasse. Alors le roi cria au conducteur de son char: Fais demi-tour et conduis-moi hors du champ de bataille, car je suis blessé. 35 Mais, ce jour-là, le combat devint si rude que le roi dut être maintenu debout dans son char face aux Syriens. Finalement, il expira dans la soirée. Le sang de sa blessure s’était répandu à l’intérieur de son char. 36 Au coucher du soleil, un cri se répandit dans toute l’armée: Que chacun retourne dans sa ville et dans ses terres! 37 Le roi étant mort, on le ramena à Samarie où on l’enterra. 38 Lorsqu’on lava son char à l’étang de la ville, les chiens lapèrent le sang d’Achab, et les prostituées s’y lavèrent. Ainsi s’accomplit ce que l’Eternel avait annoncé*. 39 Les autres faits et gestes d’Achab, toutes ses entreprises, le palais d’ivoire qu’il fit construire et toutes les villes qu’il fortifia, sont cités dans le livre des Annales des rois d’Israël. 40 Quand Achab eut rejoint ses ancêtres décédés, son fils Ahazia lui succéda sur le trône.

Le règne de Josaphat sur Juda

41 Josaphat, fils d’Asa, devint roi de Juda la quatrième année du règne d’Achab sur Israël. 42 Il était âgé de trente-cinq ans à son avènement et il régna vingt-cinq ans à Jérusalem*. Sa mère s’appelait Azouba, elle était fille de Shilhi. 43 Josaphat suivit en tout l’exemple de son père Asa sans en dévier, faisant ce que l’Eternel considère comme juste. 44 Cependant, les hauts lieux ne disparurent pas: le peuple continuait à y offrir des sacrifices et à faire brûler des parfums. 45 Josaphat vécut en paix avec le roi d’Israël. 46 Ses autres faits et gestes, ses exploits au cours des batailles sont cités dans le livre des Annales des rois de Juda. 47 C’est lui qui débarrassa le pays des derniers hommes qui s’adonnaient à la prostitution sacrée et qui avaient subsisté dans les hauts lieux du temps de son père. 48 A cette époque, il n’y avait pas de roi dans le pays d’Edom, mais seulement un gouverneur nommé par le roi de Juda. 49 Josaphat fit construire des navires au long cours pour aller à Ophir chercher de l’or; mais l’expédition n’y parvint jamais, car les navires se brisèrent à Etsyôn-Guéber. 50 Alors Ahazia, fils d’Achab, proposa à Josaphat: Faisons une expédition commune: mes serviteurs iront avec les tiens sur des navires. Mais Josaphat refusa. 51 Josaphat rejoignit ses ancêtres décédés et il fut enseveli auprès d’eux dans la Cité de David, son ancêtre, et son fils Yoram lui succéda sur le trône.

Le règne d’Ahazia sur Israël

52 La dix-septième année du règne de Josaphat, roi de Juda, Ahazia*, fils d’Achab, devint roi sur Israël à Samarie. Il régna deux ans. 53 Il fit ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal et imita l’exemple de son père, de sa mère* et de Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, qui avait entraîné le peuple d’Israël dans le péché. 54 Il rendit un culte à Baal et se prosterna devant lui, irritant ainsi l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël, tout comme l’avait fait son père.
