1In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijah* became king of Judah,2and he reigned in Jerusalem for three years. His mother’s name was Maakah daughter of Abishalom.*3He committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been.4Nevertheless, for David’s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up a son to succeed him and by making Jerusalem strong.5For David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord and had not failed to keep any of the Lord’s commands all the days of his life – except in the case of Uriah the Hittite.6There was war between Abijah* and Jeroboam throughout Abijah’s lifetime.7As for the other events of Abijah’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.8And Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. And Asa his son succeeded him as king.
Asa king of Judah
9In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah,10and he reigned in Jerusalem for forty-one years. His grandmother’s name was Maakah daughter of Abishalom.11Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done.12He expelled the male shrine-prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the idols his ancestors had made.13He even deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down and burned it in the Kidron Valley.14Although he did not remove the high places, Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life.15He brought into the temple of the Lord the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.16There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.17Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.18Asa then took all the silver and gold that was left in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and of his own palace. He entrusted it to his officials and sent them to Ben-Hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, the king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus.19‘Let there be a treaty between me and you,’ he said, ‘as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you a gift of silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so that he will withdraw from me.’20Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. He conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Beth Maakah and all Kinnereth in addition to Naphtali.21When Baasha heard this, he stopped building Ramah and withdrew to Tirzah.22Then King Asa issued an order to all Judah – no-one was exempt – and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been using there. With them King Asa built up Geba in Benjamin, and also Mizpah.23As for all the other events of Asa’s reign, all his achievements, all he did and the cities he built, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? In his old age, however, his feet became diseased.24Then Asa rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of his father David. And Jehoshaphat his son succeeded him as king.
Nadab king of Israel
25Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel for two years.26He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the ways of his father and committing the same sin his father had caused Israel to commit.27Baasha son of Ahijah from the tribe of Issachar plotted against him, and he struck him down at Gibbethon, a Philistine town, while Nadab and all Israel were besieging it.28Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa king of Judah and succeeded him as king.29As soon as he began to reign, he killed Jeroboam’s whole family. He did not leave Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all, according to the word of the Lord given through his servant Ahijah the Shilonite.30This happened because of the sins Jeroboam had committed and had caused Israel to commit, and because he aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel.31As for the other events of Nadab’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?32There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.

33In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of all Israel in Tirzah, and he reigned for twenty-four years.34He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the ways of Jeroboam and committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.

Le règne d’Asa sur Juda
9La vingtième année du règne de Jéroboam, roi d’Israël, Asa devint roi de Juda*.10Il régna quarante et un ans à Jérusalem. Il descendait d’Abishalom par sa grand-mère Maaka*.11Asa fit ce que l’Eternel considère comme juste, comme son ancêtre David.12Il expulsa du pays les gens qui se livraient à la prostitution sacrée et il fit disparaître toutes les idoles que ses ancêtres avaient fabriquées.13Il destitua même sa grand-mère Maaka de son rang de reine mère parce qu’elle avait fait dresser une idole obscène à la déesse Ashéra. Asa abattit cette horrible idole et la fit brûler dans la vallée du Cédron.14Cependant, bien qu’Asa ait eu un cœur attaché sans partage à l’Eternel durant toute sa vie, les hauts lieux ne disparurent pas.15Il déposa dans le temple de l’Eternel tous les objets d’argent et d’or et d’autres ustensiles que son père avait consacrés, en y ajoutant ceux que lui-même consacra.16Il y eut la guerre entre Asa et Baésha, roi d’Israël, pendant toute leur vie.17Baésha, roi d’Israël, vint attaquer le royaume de Juda. Il fortifia Rama*, pour empêcher qu’on pénètre sur le territoire d’Asa, roi de Juda*, et qu’on en sorte.18Alors Asa prit tout l’argent et l’or qui étaient restés dans le trésor du temple de l’Eternel* et les richesses du palais royal, et il les remit à ses ministres pour les faire porter à Ben-Hadad, fils de Tabrimmôn et petit-fils de Hézyiôn, roi de Syrie qui résidait à Damas. Il les accompagna du message suivant:19« Faisons une alliance comme il y en a eu une entre nos pères respectifs. Voici que je t’envoie de l’argent et de l’or en cadeau. Je te demande, en échange, de rompre ton alliance avec Baésha, roi d’Israël, afin qu’il cesse de me faire la guerre. »20Ben-Hadad accepta la proposition du roi Asa; il envoya ses chefs militaires attaquer les villes d’Israël et il frappa les villes d’Iyôn, de Dan et d’Abel-Beth-Maaka, ainsi que toute la région de Kineroth et le territoire de Nephtali*.21Lorsque Baésha apprit cette nouvelle, il renonça à fortifier Rama, et se retira à Tirtsa.22Alors le roi Asa mobilisa tous les Judéens sans exception pour enlever les pierres et le bois que Baésha avait rassemblés pour fortifier Rama, et il s’en servit pour fortifier la ville de Guéba sur le territoire de Benjamin ainsi que celle de Mitspa*.23Les autres faits et gestes d’Asa, sa bravoure, ses réalisations et les villes qu’il a fait bâtir, sont cités dans le livre des Annales des rois de Juda. Dans ses vieux jours, il eut une maladie des pieds.24Quand il rejoignit ses ancêtres décédés, il fut enterré auprès d’eux dans la Cité de David. Son fils Josaphat lui succéda sur le trône*.
Le règne de Nadab sur Israël et la fin de la dynastie de Jéroboam
25Nadab, fils de Jéroboam, devint roi d’Israël la deuxième année du règne d’Asa, roi de Juda. Il régna deux ans sur Israël*.26Il fit ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal en imitant l’exemple de son père et en entraînant son peuple dans le même péché.27Alors Baésha, fils d’Ahiya, de la tribu d’Issacar, conspira contre lui et l’assassina devant Guibbetôn, une ville des Philistins*, au moment où Nadab et l’armée d’Israël l’assiégeaient.28Baésha commit ce meurtre la troisième année du règne d’Asa, roi de Juda, et il le supplanta sur le trône.29Quand il fut roi, il fit périr tous les membres de la famille de Jéroboam. Il n’y laissa subsister personne, massacrant tout le monde, comme l’Eternel l’avait prédit par l’intermédiaire de son serviteur Ahiya de Silo*,30à cause des péchés que Jéroboam avait commis et de ceux qu’il avait fait commettre au peuple d’Israël, ce qui avait irrité l’Eternel, leur Dieu.31Les autres faits et gestes de Nadab et toutes ses réalisations sont cités dans le livre des Annales des rois d’Israël.32Asa et Baésha, roi d’Israël, furent, toute leur vie, en guerre l’un contre l’autre*.
Le règne de Baésha sur Israël et le prophète Jéhu
33La troisième année du règne d’Asa, roi de Juda, Baésha, fils d’Ahiya, devint roi de tout Israël à Tirtsa. Il régna vingt-quatre ans*.34Il fit ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal en imitant l’exemple de Jéroboam et en entraînant Israël dans le même péché.
