1Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.2And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.3And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron.4And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.5And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth , and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.6And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth , and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.7And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.8Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.9Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.10And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.11And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.12Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he brake them from off his arms like a thread.13And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.14And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.15And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth .16And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;17That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother' womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.18And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.19And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.20And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.21But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.22Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.23Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.24And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us.25And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars.26And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house standeth, that I may lean upon them.27Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.28And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.29And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.30And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.31Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.

1Und Simson ging nach Gaza; und er sah dort eine Hure und ging zu ihr ein.2Da wurde den Gazitern gesagt: Simson ist hierhergekommen! Und sie umstellten ihn und lauerten die ganze Nacht auf ihn im Stadttor. Sie verhielten sich die ganze Nacht ruhig und sprachen: Am Morgen, wenn es hell wird, wollen wir ihn erschlagen!3Und Simson lag bis Mitternacht. Um Mitternacht aber stand er auf; und er ergriff beide Flügel des Stadttores samt den beiden Pfosten und riss sie mitsamt den Riegeln heraus, und er legte sie auf seine Schultern und trug sie hinauf auf den Gipfel des Berges, der vor Hebron liegt.

4Danach aber gewann er eine Frau lieb am Bach Sorek, die hieß Delila.5Da kamen die Fürsten der Philister hinauf und sprachen zu ihr: Überrede ihn und sieh, worin seine große Kraft besteht und wodurch wir ihn überwinden können, damit wir ihn binden und bezwingen, so wollen wir dir jeder 1 100 Silberlinge geben!6Da sprach Delila zu Simson: Verrate mir doch, worin deine große Kraft besteht und womit man dich binden kann, um dich zu bezwingen!7Simson aber sprach zu ihr: Wenn man mich mit sieben frischen Sehnen binden würde, die noch nicht vertrocknet sind, so würde ich schwach und wie jeder andere Mensch!8Da brachten die Fürsten der Philister sieben frische Sehnen zu ihr hinauf, die noch nicht vertrocknet waren; und sie band ihn damit.9Man lauerte aber auf ihn, bei ihr in der Kammer. Und sie sprach zu ihm: Philister über dir, Simson! Er aber zerriss die Sehnen, wie man Flachsfaden zerreißt, wenn er Feuer gerochen hat. So wurde nicht offenbar, worin seine Kraft lag.10Da sprach Delila zu Simson: Siehe, du hast mich betrogen und mir Lügen vorgeschwatzt! Nun verrate mir doch, womit man dich binden kann!11Da antwortete er ihr: Wenn man mich fest binden würde mit neuen Stricken, mit denen nie eine Arbeit getan worden ist, so würde ich schwach und wie jeder andere Mensch!12Da nahm Delila neue Stricke und band ihn damit und sprach zu ihm: Philister über dir, Simson! Und man lauerte ihm auf in der Kammer; er aber riss sie von seinen Armen wie einen Faden.13Da sprach Delila zu Simson: Bisher hast du mich betrogen und mir Lügen vorgeschwatzt! Sage mir doch, womit man dich binden kann! Er antwortete ihr: Wenn du die sieben Haarflechten meines Hauptes mit Kettenfäden* zusammenflechten würdest!14Da heftete sie diese an einen Pflock und sprach zu ihm: Philister über dir, Simson! Er aber wachte von seinem Schlaf auf und riss den Webepflock samt den Kettenfäden heraus.15Da sprach sie zu ihm: Wie kannst du sagen, du hättest mich lieb, während dein Herz doch nicht mit mir ist? Dreimal hast du mich nun betrogen und mir nicht verraten, worin deine große Kraft besteht!16Als sie ihn aber alle Tage mit ihren Worten nötigte und in ihn drang, da wurde seine Seele zum Sterben matt.17Da verriet er ihr alles, was in seinem Herzen war, und sprach zu ihr: Es ist kein Schermesser auf mein Haupt gekommen; denn ich bin ein Nasiräer Gottes von Mutterleib an. Wenn ich nun geschoren würde, so wiche meine Kraft von mir, und ich würde schwach und wie alle anderen Menschen!18Als nun Delila sah, dass er ihr sein ganzes Herz geoffenbart hatte, sandte sie hin und ließ die Fürsten der Philister rufen und ihnen sagen: Kommt noch einmal herauf; denn er hat mir sein ganzes Herz geoffenbart! Da kamen die Fürsten der Philister wieder zu ihr hinauf mit dem Geld in ihrer Hand.19Und sie ließ ihn auf ihrem Schoß einschlafen und rief einen Mann, der schor ihm die sieben Haarflechten seines Hauptes ab; und sie begann, ihn zu bezwingen, und seine Kraft wich von ihm.20Da sprach sie zu ihm: Philister über dir, Simson! Als er nun von seinem Schlaf erwachte, dachte er: Ich komme davon wie immer und brauche mich nur freizuschütteln! Er wusste aber nicht, dass der HERR von ihm gewichen war.21Aber die Philister nahmen ihn fest und stachen ihm die Augen aus; und sie führten ihn nach Gaza hinab und banden ihn mit zwei ehernen Ketten; und er musste im Gefängnis die Mühle drehen.
Simsons Rache und Tod
22Aber das Haar seines Hauptes fing wieder an zu wachsen, sobald es geschoren worden war.23Als nun die Fürsten der Philister sich versammelten, um ihrem Gott Dagon ein großes Opfer zu bringen und ein Freudenfest zu feiern, sprachen sie: »Unser Gott hat den Simson, unseren Feind, in unsere Hand gegeben!«24Und als das Volk ihn sah, lobten sie ihren Gott; denn sie sprachen: »Unser Gott hat unseren Feind in unsere Hand gegeben, ja, den Verwüster unseres Landes, ja, den, der so viele der Unseren erschlagen hat!«25Als nun ihr Herz guter Dinge war, sprachen sie: Ruft den Simson, damit er vor uns spiele! Da riefen sie den Simson aus dem Gefängnis, und er spielte vor ihnen. Und sie stellten ihn zwischen die Säulen.*26Simson aber sprach zu dem Burschen, der ihn an der Hand hielt: Lass mich los, damit ich die Säulen, auf denen das Haus ruht, anrühren und mich daran lehnen kann!27Das Haus aber war voll von Männern und Frauen. Auch waren alle Fürsten der Philister dort und auf dem Dach etwa 3 000 Männer und Frauen, die zusahen, wie Simson spielte.28Simson aber rief den HERRN an und sprach: Mein Herr, HERR, gedenke doch an mich und stärke mich doch, o Gott, nur diesmal noch, damit ich mich an den Philistern mit einem Mal für meine beiden Augen rächen kann!29Und Simson umfasste die beiden Mittelsäulen, auf denen das Haus ruhte, die eine mit seiner rechten und die andere mit seiner linken Hand, und stemmte sich gegen sie.30Und Simson sprach: Meine Seele sterbe mit den Philistern! Dann neigte er sich mit seiner ganzen Kraft. Da fiel das Haus auf die Fürsten und auf alles Volk, das darin war, sodass [die Zahl] der Toten, die er in seinem Sterben tötete, größer war als [die Zahl] derer, die er während seines Lebens getötet hatte.31Da kamen seine Brüder und das ganze Haus seines Vaters herab und hoben ihn auf und trugen ihn hinauf und begruben ihn zwischen Zorea und Estaol im Grab seines Vaters Manoach. Er hatte aber Israel 20 Jahre lang gerichtet.
